    Social Activist and Visionary
"The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched.
They must be felt with the heart."
At the tender age of 19 months, Helen Keller suffered an illness that left her profoundly deaf and blind. She overcame these disabilities with the assistance of a devoted teacher, Anne Sullivan, who taught Helen how to read and write in Braille. She would later learn to speak in a primitive fashion. After graduation from Radcliffe College in 1904, Keller devoted herself to a range of social causes. Between 1909 and 1924, she was active in the radical politics of the Socialist Party and the Industrial Workers of the World. She also campaigned against U.S. entry into World War I and in favor of women's suffrage. Beginning in 1924, however, Keller was an articulate spokesman for the American Foundation for the Blind and a national symbol of personal courage in the face of adversity. Her many books and William Gibson's popular play, The Miracle Worker helped to convince the American people that physical limitations need not compromise a person's intellectual potential.

Introduction Helen Keller was an inspiration to millions of people throughout the world because of her courage and her ability to overcome both blindness and deafness. The story of Helen Keller's life is familiar, having been immortalized in her own books and in plays and movies. Equally well known is the role Anne Sullivan played in teaching Keller how to communicate and to live a productive life. Keller used her life as a means to tell others that physical handicaps can be overcome and that people with physical differences can live full and meaningful lives. Helen Keller Helen Keller was able to live in a world unknown to her by using the eyes and ears of others around her. Her characteristics were noted as kind, generous, and enthusiastic. Even as an infant she was full of energy. She had numerous friends, however; she still had empathy for the poor of the world. (Tragedy 1995)
Helen Keller was born to Captain Arthur H. Keller and his second wife on July 27, 1880. She was a lively and healthy baby before the illness that took her sight and hearing. At nineteen months, Helen was stricken with a deadly fever that almost took her life, however it only left the distant memories of light and sounds.
She learned how to do small chores around the house by following her mother and feeling her hands. She recognized people by touching the characteristics of their faces and clothes. When in the garden, she could tell where she was by the smell of the flowers around her and the feel of the earth under her feet. (RNIB 2001) She, also, devised her own signs to communicate with her family her needs and wants. She was very intelligent and sensitive. However, she was frustrated easily because of her inability to communicate, and this caused behavior problems. (RNIB 2000)
Anne Sullivan came into her life at age seven. Anne came from the Perkins School for the Blind and was hired as a private tutor for Helen. Anne came from an impoverished background. She, too, lost her vision at a young age, five years old. However, after two successful surgeries Anne was able to see again. Her determination and patients overcame Helen's disobedience and wild tantrums. She knew that in order for Helen to learn she would have to gain control of the child's misbehavior. She, also, knew that Helen would become a different person after she learned to how communicate. (RNIB 2001)

    Introduction
Helen Adams Keller was born on 27 June 1880 in Tuscumbia, a small rural town in Northwest Alabama, USA. The daughter of Captain Arthur Henley Keller and Kate Adams Keller she was born with full sight and hearing. Kate Keller was a tall, statuesque blond with blue eyes. She was some twenty years younger than her husband Captain Keller, a loyal southerner who had proudly served in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War. The house they lived in was a simple, white, clapboard house built in 1820 by Helen's grandparents. At the time of Helen's birth the family were far from wealthy with Captain Keller earning a living as both a cotton plantation owner and the editor of a weekly local newspaper, the "North Alabamian". Helen's mother, as well as working on the plantation, would save money by making her own butter, lard, bacon and ham.
    Helen falls ill
But Helen's life was to change dramatically. In February 1882, when Helen was nineteen months old, she fell ill. To this day the nature of her ailment remains a mystery. The doctors of the time called it "brain fever", whilst modern day doctors think it may have been scarlet fever or meningitis.

She was in essence shut off from the world she had known, and her reaction was frustration and rage. Anne worked patiently and painstakingly with Anne, teaching her sign language by forming the letters in Helen´s hand. Helen learned to parrot the symbols back, but had no idea what they stood for. Then, on 5 April 1887, Helen was standing with her hand in flowing water, and Anne repeatedly signed "water water water" in her hand, as she had done many other days. Suddenly the light clicked in Helen´s mind - these symbols MEANT the wet substance touching her hand! She was joyful and amazed - she had a way to communicate about things around her, and to interact with people. She ran around, signing words and asking what other items were. It was the opening of an entirely new life for her. She went on to earn her bachelor´s degree at Radcliff college, with honors, in a day where many women did not attend college, wrote poetry, and wrote an autobiography. She was an outspoken socialist and supported the NAACP and ACLU. She helped lobby with the government for more services for blind and deaf people.

    Helen Keller (1880 – 1968)
"I fall, I stand still...I trudge on, I gain a little...I get more eager and climb higher and begin to see the widening horizon. Every struggle is a victory." Helen Keller was born on June 27, 1880 in Alabama to a newspaper editor. In 1882, at the age of 19 months, Helen caught a fever that almost killed her. She survived, but the fever cut her off from the outside world, robbing her of her sight and hearing. Helen was an intelligent child and explored the world through her other senses. She smelled and touched everything, and felt people’s hands to learn what they were doing. Before long she learned to do certain jobs, like milking the cows or kneading dough, by feeling other people’s hands and copying their actions. She also learned to recognize people by feeling their faces or their clothes. By the age of five Helen realized that she was different. Other people could talk to communicate and she found it very frustrating that she could not. This frustration caused her go into fits of anger, hurling herself around the room, kicking and screaming.

In An Intimate History of Humanity (1994) Theodore Zeldin wrote that "no history of the world can be complete which does not mention Mary Helen Keller... whose overcoming of her blindness and deafness were arguably victories more important than those of Alexander the Great, because they have implications still for every living person." "Children who hear acquire language without any particular effort; the words that fall from others' lips they catch on the wing, as it were, delightedly, while the little deaf child must trap them by a slow and often painful process. But whatever the process, the result is wonderful. Gradually from naming an object we advance step by step until we have traversed the vast distance between our first stammered syllable and the sweep of thought in a line of Shakespeare." Helen's mother, Kate Adams Keller, was a Memphis belle who was twenty years younger than her husband. Helen lost her hearing and sight at 19 months of age, but she had learned the meaning of the word "water," and her vision had been excellent. As she grew up, she managed to learn to do tiny errands, but also realized that she was missing something. Keller was sent to a state school for the blind, but failed first grade because she could not read braille. At the age of fourteen she was physically more developed than most of the girls of her age. For medical and cosmetic reasons, her eyes were removed and replaced with glass ones.

The teacher, young Anne Sullivan, herself formerly blind, managed to break through to communicate with Helen. The child loved to learn, and her remarkable achievements in reading, writing and even speaking soon made her internationally famous.
