THOMAS (ARCHBISHOP)
THOMAS, ST—THOMAS A KEMPIS The Ada Thomae, very imperfectly published by Thito (1823) and Tischendorf (1851), have been edited in Greek by Bonnet ^Leipzig, 1883, 2nd ed., with new matter, 1903),and in the original Syriac, with an English translation, by W. Wright (Apocryphal Acts, 2 vols., London, 1871). See also Lipsius, Die apocryphen Aposlelgesch., ii.(2nd. 6^0423-425 (Brunswick) ;F.C. Burkittin Journ. Theol. St. i. 280 seq., ii. 94. The Ada are said by Photius to be a part of the Utpioboi TUV ATrotrrAXuc of the Gnostic Lcucius Charinus, but this unknown personage is to be thought of as a collector of Gnostic " Acts of Apostles," rather than as the first author. In spite of extensive Catholic revision, the " Acts of Thomas " form one of the most interesting monuments of Syriac Gnosticism. Internal evidence assigns them with great probability to the school of Barde-sanes, and the very ancient allegorical hymn about the soul which is preserved in the Syriac text (p. 274 seq., Eng. trans., p. 238 seq.) is perhaps by Bardesanes himself (cf. Noldeke in Z.D.M.G., 1871, p. 676). This hymn was translated into the Greek Ada, along with the rest of the work (Bonnet, pp. 210-224, Anal, boUand. xx. 158-164), It is one of the most remarkable pieces in Syriac literature, and has been edited separately by A. A. Bevan, Texts and Studies, v. 3 (Cambridge, 1897). A metrical English version is given in F. C. Burkitt's Early Eastern Christianity, p. 2.18 seq. (London, 1904).

So, I do have my faults (no, really) and one of them is my selfishness on certain things; therefore, I do not respect other people's religions or beliefs if they are not as mine. And I am a Christian. Greek Orthodox in particular. Am I giving Christianity a bad name, then? Just mind your own business. On this page I will share with those who are interested the things that have influenced me and in which I believe quite strongly. What I find fascinating about Orthodoxy is that it is based largely on things man cannot comprehend; which is why I believe in miracles. And which is also why I do not respect other religions and heresies: because people are so selfish and want to understand everything, cannot dare to just trust and believe in something they do not fully grasp, they invent their own theories and follow nothing but compromises. This is not to say that I am following a religion like a blindfolded sheep - I do not dive into the things that I am not able to fully conceive, if this is not necessary; for a fuller and much better explanation of what I mean, read this After the Bible

CHAPTER XLVI
THE MYSTIC SCHOOL
The revival of the principles of mysticism was a natural result of the decadent condition of philosophy during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. The heaping of subtlety on subtlety and the interminable controversies of the advocates of Thomism and Scotism bewildered and disgusted the serious seeker after spiritual light and drove him eventually to abandon all intellectual philosophy in favor of a life of contemplation and prayer. Many believed with the author of the Imitation of Christ Orthodox Mystics. John Ruysbroek (1293-1381) may be regarded as the founder of the orthodox mysticism of this period. After having been chaplain at St. Gudule, in Brussels, he retired to the convent of the Augustinians at Groenendael, where he gave himself to the study and practice of asceticism. Through Gerhard Groot (1340-1384), the founder of the Brothers of the Common Life, the influence of Ruysbroek reached the members of the community at Deventer, among whom was Thomas Hemerken or the author of the Imitation of Christ.

30. Thomas a Kempis, Imitatio Christi . Manuscript, Augsburg, 1463-1470 The Imitatio Christi has been variously ascribed amongst others to Jean Gerson, Geert Groote, and Bonaventura. The colophon of the manuscript designates Thomas a Kempis (ca.1380-1471) from the monastery of Mount St. Agnes (near Zwolle) as the author. As such it belongs to a group of four, almost identical, manuscripts from the Augsburg area, and it is assumed that the Zainer edition (shortly before 1472; see no 31) goes back to this version.
