St. Catherine of Sienna A Doctor of the Church, St. Catherine of Sienna is one of the most revered theologians of the Church. A nun who was an advisor to the Pope, she was also known for her visions. The Dialogue was dictated while in such an ecstatic state. The Dialogue of the Seraphic Virgin St. Ignatius of Loyola, S.J. While recovering from a canon injury, Ignatius of Loyola studyied the lives of Christ and the saints. Deciding the saints' examples were worth following, he began his life-long spiritual quest. On the way he founded the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), the largest order of the Church. He also wrote The Spiritual Exercises , a classic work of Catholic spirituality.

Mendes da Costa, Vincents leraar klassieke talen, "dat Vincent telkens weer volhield dat hij genoeg had aan Bunyan’s The pilgrim’s progress , aan Thomas à Kempis en een vertaling van de bijbel." Dat het werk van John Bunyan indruk maakte op Vincent is bijna voor de hand liggend, alleen al omdat Bunyan (1628-1688) als non-conformistisch prediker in 1660 tot een gevangenisstraf van twaalf jaar werd veroordeeld. The Medieval Churchmen "That . . . you might learn not to exceed what is written" (1 Corinthians 4:6). he Dark Ages ushered in some dubious trends in theology. Medieval theologians seemed uncertain of how to sort out Scripture from tradition. Whereas the early Ecumenical Church Councils had invariably settled matters on the basis of Scripture, theology in the middle ages began to treat church tradition and ecclesiastical authority as tantamount to the Word of God. (This view was later formally ratified as official Catholic doctrine by the Council of Trent.) Despite the ruling against semi-Pelagianism by the Council of Orange in 529 A.D., subtle semi-Pelagian tendencies began to infiltrate the church, so that by the time of Trent in the late sixteenth century, the Catholic Church took a position that was almost pure semi-Pelagianism. During this period, monasticism was on the rise, and Scholasticism became the predominant approach to theology. Scholastic theology relied heavily on speculation and philosophy. Taken to an extreme, it ultimately turned the discipline of theology into pure sophistry. It broadened the gap between clergy and laity, and finally gave rise to the brand of Catholicism against which the Reformers rebelled. Thomas Aquinas (1225-74), the Master theologian of the Catholic Church, is the dominant figure of this era. In Thomas most of the seeds of Tridentine Catholicism are found. He backed away from Augustine's strong emphasis on the grace of God in salvation. Thomas seemed to see salvation as more of a cooperative effort between God and the sinner.

Home Encyclopedia Summa Fathers ... Z Author of the "Imitation of Christ" , born at Kempen in the Diocese of Cologne , in 1379 or 1380; died 25 July, 1471. His parents, John and Gertrude Haemerken, were of the artisan class; it is said that Gertrude kept the village school, and most probably the father worked in metals, a common calling in Kempen, whence perhaps the surname Haemerken, or Haemerlein, Latinized Malleolus Christians at Jerusalem and Antioch in the first. It owed its inception to the fervid preaching of the Deacon Gerard Groote, its further organization to the prudence and generous devotedness of Florentius Radewyn. Its associates were called the "Devout Brothers and Sisters", also the "Brothers and Sisters of the Common Life". They took no vows, but lived a life of poverty, chastity, and obedience, as far as was compatible with their state, some in their own homes and others, especially clerics, in community. They were forbidden to beg, but all were expected to earn their living by the labour of their hands; for the clerics this meant chiefly the transcribing of books and the instruction of the young. All earnings were placed in a common fund, at the disposal of the superior; the one ambition of all was to emulate the life and virtues of the first Christians , especially in the love of God Jesus Christ as shown in His words and works, but especially in the sufferings of His Passion. The Imitation of Christ . These meditations on the life and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth have been prized by many people throughout the centuries. A major theme of the Imitation is that we tend to live and act unthinkingly and without a reasonable direction or plan for our lives. True enlightenment comes from self-knowledge and knowledge of and trust in God. There are even traces of Stoicism in this and in his other works, which consistently demonstrate a life devoted to piety, holiness, prayer, and mysticism.
