F avorite M onks T homas K empis Thomas à Kempis 1379 (or 1380) -1471 Author of The Imitation of Christ ; Thomas was an Augustinian Monk, and a Disciple of Gerard Groot. Thomas was a member of Groot's Brethren of the Common Life , and a proponent of Groot's teachings, called The Devotio Moderna , of which The Imitation of Christ is the best example. Have you received Christ as your Lord and Saviour? Tell others about Jesus like Thomas à Kempis did: Though not all Christians are called to the ministry of teaching, we are all called by God to share our faith (witness) with those who are not Christians. Some Bible verses that you will find helpful for doing this, and that you may want to commit to memory are found on other pages on our web site ( see: Memory Verses; 2nd Set: Salvation! Plan of Salvation , and Statement of Faith by Monk Preston "Hold fast to Jesus both in life and in death and commit yourself to his steadfast love, for he alone can help you when all others fail. Your beloved is such that he admits no other rival; He wants your heart all to Himself and desires to reign there as a king on his own throne." -Thomas à Kempis

http://www.ahoghill.connor.anglican.org/christmas02/helen.htm
Helen Du Bois-Pidgeon writes... I have often looked through the hymnbook in church and wondered about the people who wrote some of the hymns that we all know so well. I always imagined these people to have led extremely religious and quiet lives. But not so……………take for example ‘Amazing Grace’. This hymn was written by a man called John Newton (1725-1807). He led quite a wild life, and from the age of eleven he went to sea with his father. It is said that this life was full of wonderful escapes, vivid dreams and recklessness associated with a sailor’s life in those days. Then he read Thomas á Kempis. Thomas was a German monk (1380 –1471) and was a traditional author of ‘The imitation of Christ’ and the seed of conversion was sown in John Newton. When John was 23 years old he spent a night steering a waterlogged ship in the face of apparent death and, because of this, his conversion was complete. He commanded a slave ship over the next six years as his faith grew and matured. Despite the fact that he had only had two years schooling as a young boy, John Newton went on to study Hebrew and Greek in Liverpool and was eventually ordained, becoming a curate at Olney, Buckinghamshire in 1764. John joined forces with another man called Wesley Whitefield and together they produced the ‘Olney Hymns’.
