Interessant is in dit verband na te gaan hoe de Russen reageerden op deze versterking van de wapenwedloop. Chroesjtsjov besefte terdege dat hij niet in staat zou zijn om de Verenigde Staten met ICBM's te overtroeven. Daarom zocht hij zijn toevlucht in de vergroting van het explosieve tonnage. In augustus 1961 kondigde hij aan dat de SU het moratorium op bovengrondse kernproeven brak. Er vonden een serie tests plaats, waarbij met de grootste explosie een bom tot ontploffing werd gebracht die 58 megaton explosieve kracht bevatte, vergelijkbaar met 3000 x Hiroshima. Kennedy wist dat de Verenigde Staten de wapenwedloop niet verliezen kon, maar moest toch iets doen, hoewel hij enigszins beducht was voor de fall-out bij bovengrondse proeven. Uiteindelijk doet hij toch mee aan de bovengrondse proeven en laat in april 1962 een dertigtal tests doen. Chroesjtsjov raakt aardig gefrustreerd en kiest dan voor de oplossing van het bouwen van een raketinstallatie op Cuba

John F. Kennedy
John F. Kennedy (1917-1963) was de 35ste president van de Verenigde Staten van Amerika. Hij dankte zijn populariteit vooral aan zijn optreden tijdens de Cuba-crisis en zijn sterke verschijning op de televisie. John Fitzgerald Kennedy werd geboren in Brookline, Massachusetts als tweede kind in een katholiek gezin met negen kinderen. Drie van deze kinderen – John, Robert en Edward – zouden later hun opwachting maken in de politiek. Vader Joseph Patrick Kennedy was een rijke zakenman. John ging in 1935 studeren aan de Princeton University, maar door ziekte moest hij zijn studie snel opgeven. Een jaar later hervatte hij zijn opleiding aan de Harvard universiteit. In de Tweede Wereldoorlog diende John F. Kennedy in de Pacific. Hij werd onderscheiden met de US Navy and Marine Corps Medal.

John F. Kennedy
John Fitzgerald Kennedy was the 35th president of the United States of America. Kennedy's handling of the Cuban missile crisis and his strong television appearance made him a very popular president.
Kennedy was born in Brookline, Massachusetts as second of nine children. Three of those children - John, Robert and Edward - later entered politics. It was a wealthy Roman Catholic family. Father Joseph Patrick Kennedy amassed a fortune through business ventures.
John F. Kennedy went to school in Connecticut and entered Princeton University in 1935, but illness forced him to leave school. The next year he resumed his study at Harvard University. During World War II John F. Kennedy served in the South Pacific and received the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps Medal. After the war Kennedy worked as a reporter for the Hearst International News Service, but he soon decided to enter politics.
At the age of 29 he became a congressman. After he served three terms in the House of Representatives he decided to run for Senator of Massachusetts in 1952. Kennedy defeated Henry Cabot Lodge.
