Kennedy Born on this day in Brookline, Massachusetts , the second of nine children , John Fitzgerald Kennedy (1917-1963) was a Harvard graduate, Naval war hero and Pulitzer Prize writer before becoming the 35th President of the United States. "If more politicians knew poetry, and more poets knew politics, I am convinced the world would be a little better place in which to live," Kennedy once observed. Kennedy was the first Roman Catholic elected President and the first president born in the 20th century. He won the White House by a narrow popular margin. An eloquent orator, his promise of America's “New Frontier” brought hope and inspiration as he created the Peace Corps and set the goal of putting a man on the moon. "One person can make a difference," he said, "and every person must try." With charisma, living a life often romanticized as "Camelot," Kennedy was a dynamic, gifted

The 35th President of the United States (1961-1963)
If my church attempted to influence me in a way which was improper or which affected adversely my responsibilities as a public servant sworn to uphold the Constitution, then I would reply to them that this was an improper action on their part. It was one to which I could not subscribe.
John F. Kennedy , press conference, Houston, Texas, September 12, 1960, from Albert J. Menendez and Edd Doerr, The Great Quotations on Religious Freedom We do not want an official state church. If ninety-nine percent of the population were Catholics, I would still be opposed to it. I do not want civil power combined with religious power. I want to make it clear that I am committed as a matter of deep personal conviction to separation.

John F. Kennedy (1917-1963), 35th president of the United States, the youngest man and the first Roman Catholic ever elected to the presidency, remembered for his contribution to the "thaw" in the Cold War, and the beginning of the United States manned space flights. After serving two years and ten months in office, he was assassinated. John Fitzgerald Kennedy, the second son of nine children of Joseph Patrick Kennedy and Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy, was born in Brookline, Mass., on May 29, 1917. His great-grandparents immigrated to the United States from Ireland in 1858, settling in Boston. His grandfathers, Patrick J. Kennedy and John F. ("Honey Fitz") Fitzgerald, were both influential in state politics. "Honey Fitz" became Boston's mayor, serving three terms, and a member of the United States House of Representatives. Patrick Kennedy served in both houses of the Massachusetts legislature. Patrick's son, Joseph, bank president at age 25, became a self-made multimillionaire, head of the Securities and Exchange Commission, and ambassador to Great Britain. He instilled in his children a sense of the competitive spirit.

Biography
Quote John Fitzgerald Kennedy was born on May 29th 1917 at Brookline (Massachusetts). His father Joseph Kennedy was an ambitious politician, who became from son of a pubkeeper to a millionaire. He married the daughter of the major of Boston, Rose Fitzgerald. John F. was their second son. During World War II their oldest son lost his life, when his airplane exploded above the Canal. Kennedy studied at Harvard and after he had finished, he also had to serve in the war. As lieutenant of the PT 109 he once was shipwrecked, but he survived and because of his heroism he saved the lives of his crew. In 1952 he became senator of Massachusetts. In 1956 he almost became running mate of Adlai Stevenson, but lost to Estes Kefauver of Tennessee: anyway, they lost the elections. In 1958 he won reelection in Massachusetts by 875,000 votes, the largest majority in the state's history. He was elected for president in November 1960, after a less than easy election contest. He defeated Richard Nixon and became the youngest (43) to be elected to the White House in American history 'till then. In contrast to Al Smith in 1928 (first Catholic presidential candidate) Kennedy was elected despite of being Catholic.

John Fitzgerald Kennedy
John Fitzgerald Kennedy was the 35th (1961-1963) President of the United States. Kennedy was the second youngest U.S. president ever elected, and the first and only Roman Catholic president. He beat Richard Nixon, Vice President in the previous administration, in a famous, closely-contested presidential election. For various reasons, Kennedy was, during the time he served, perhaps the most popular president in U.S. history. He was a handsome photogenic man, who seemed open and accessible, and the fact that his administration marked a notable increase in direct media exposure of the president to the public at large - through television broadcasts from the Oval Office, televised press conferences, and numerous photo spreads in popular magazines. The charisma, with its air of charm, ease and nobility projected to the public by Kennedy and his family led to the figurative designation of Camelot to the White House in its role as the Kennedy family home. Information released after his death leaves little doubt that he had at least one, and probably several affairs while in office, including liaisons in the White House. Such things were not then considered fit for publication, and in Kennedy's case, were never publicly discussed. Kennedy was only president for about 1,000 days. This brief tenure was marked by such notable events as the acceleration of the United States' role in the space race, the beginning of the escalation of the American role in the Vietnam War, the Cuban missile crisis, and the Bay of Pigs; these events aggravated the Cold War with the USSR. He appointed his brother Robert F. Kennedy to his Cabinet as Attorney General.

was born on May 29, 1917 in Brookline, Massachusetts. He entered the Navy in 1940 after graduation from Harvard. Back from the war, he became a Democratic Congressman from the Boston area, advancing in 1953 to the Senate. He married Jacqueline Bouvier on September 12, 1953. In 1955, while recuperating from a back operation, he wrote "Profiles in Courage," and won the Pulitzer Prize in history. In 1960 Kennedy gained the Democratic Party's nomination for President. Millions watched his television debates with the Republican candidate, Richard M. Nixon. Winning by a narrow margin in the popular vote, Kennedy became the youngest man elected President, and the first Roman Catholic. President Kennedy's economic programs launched the country on its longest sustained expansion since World War II. He also took vigorous action in the cause of equal rights, calling for new civil rights legislation. Shortly after his inauguration, Kennedy permitted a group of Cuban exiles to invade Cuba in an attempt to overthrow the regime of Fidel Castro. The invasion was a failure. In 1962 the Russians began to install nuclear missiles in Cuba. When this was discovered in October of 1962, Kennedy imposed a quarantine on all offensive weapons bound for Cuba. With the world on the brink of nuclear war, the Russians backed down and agreed to remove the missiles. Kennedy asserted that both the Russians and Americans had a vital interest in stopping the spread of nuclear weapons and the arms race. To this end his administration negotiated the test ban treaty of 1963.
