An Evening with Stan Mikita
When an NHL Hall-of-Famer comes to town, you would gladly walk several miles to get his autograph. When he's signing for free, you run. Stan Mikita, elected to the Hall Of Fame in 1983, runs a hockey school for the hearing impaired each summer. To raise funds for the school, he often stages charity hockey games with the proceeds going to his school. I found out that such a game was scheduled right here in my town against some local Amoco employees. Stan, along with some former Blackhawk players, staged a clinic at 3:00 in the afternoon for youths. Following the clinic, they set up a couple tables and signed FREE autographs for everyone. Mikita sat at the front of the table, along with former teammates Cliff Koroll, Peter Marsh, Reg Kerr, and Keith Magnuson. They signed pucks, jerseys, cards, and programs for the 200-300 people there, all with a big smile. After the signing, the Blackhawks alumni (which includes a couple hearing impaired players) played the Amoco employees in an exhibition game. Tickets to the game were a mere $5, with all of the proceeds going to charity. Mikita's Hawks, as you would expect, won the game by a score of 14-7. Mikita popped in 2 goals to help the cause. During the game, a silent charity auction was held featuring Chicago-related items such as an autographed Chris Chelios jersey and a Michael Jordan signed photo. I bid on a round of golf at a local country club, but was quickly outbid. They also gave away several Mikita signed pucks during the game.

780 Total Entrants: 606 Finishers 7 Mile Island Race 110 Finishers 2 Mile Run-Walk
The event was timed with the WinningTime ankle band chip system. If you did not return your band please see below for how to return your band, and not pay the replacement fee. Thank you. The school provides week-long vacations for visually handicapped children. Many volunteers worked very hard and tirelessly on this event, and that work was evident from start to finish, along with the Charity Festival which immediately follows the race. Early morning rain stopped prior to race start but the air was heavy, and still with high humidity. It was a good thing that the sun did not come out. There was plenty of water for all participants especially at the finish with cold wet towels and an overhead spray of water for all finishers. Plenty of bottled cold water was also readily available. With over $8,000 in premium cash awards on the line, an exciting event went off quickly. Breaking away for a solo win was Gabriel Muchiri, 24 years old, West Chester, PA in an excellent 33:28. He gave it a good go at the $1,000 time bonus if he could break 32:50. But the humidity just was too tough on race morning. Gabriel still walked away with the $1,000 overall first cash prize.

Illingworth Holey (Buck) Kerr The prairies's first native-born professional artist Buck Kerr's vivid portrayals of western landscapes and his influence as a renowned teacher made him a pioneer in the development of visual arts in Alberta. Born in Lumsden, Saskatchewan, Kerr studied at the Ontario College of Art, Toronto (1924-27), with several members of the Group of Seven, and at the New Westminster School of Art, London, England (1936). In 1945-46, he taught at the Vancouver School of Art. From 1947-67, he was the head of the Art Department at Alberta's Provincial Institute of Technology and Art, which under his guidance evolved from a small department with one full-time teacher (Stan Perrott) to the Alberta College of Art, one of Canada's best art schools, offering a four year course in all departments. Perrott observed, "He was a tower of strength in Alberta... The painters of Alberta today may not paint like Buck Kerr- but they are his children. They all caught his spirit. He was the central reference point for artistic morality and dynamic living." Kerr's second greatest interest was writing. In the early 1930's he wrote short stories for Blackwood's magazine of Edinburgh. His 1946 illustrated book of stories about life on the prairies, "Gay Dogs and Dark Horses", was short-listed for the Stephen Leacock Medal for Humour. His autobiography, "Paint and Circumstance" was published in 1987.

Stan CornynKing of Liner Notes
L ike pulp fiction, liner notes may one day come to be appreciated as works of literature. And when they do, it's certain that Stan Cornyn will be viewed as the Jim Thompson of liner notes. He's already scored at least one scholarly article ("The Composition of Celebrity: Sinatra as Text in the Liner Notes of Stan Cornyn," Gilbert L. Gigliotti, in , Len Mustazza, Ed., Westport, CT: Praeger Publishers, 1998). While working for Warner Brothers and Reprise in the 1960s, Cornyn penned notes to a number of albums. To call them liner notes is stretching the conceptthese are more like fantastical riffs played out by a cat so far out there he's in a galaxy by himself. Cornyn actually won back-to-back Grammys in 1965 and 1966 for two Sinatra albums, September of My Years and Sinatra at the Sands . Cornyn was director of Creative Services at Warner as the 70s came in, and masterminded a number of ground-breaking marketing and packaging ventures, such as the Schlagers series of low-cost label samplers. He helped launch Randy Newman's career with the equivocal marketing line, "Once You Get Used to It, His Voice Really is Something." Cornyn went on to become a major player in the biz as the president of Warner New Media in the early 1990s, then ran Mediavision Multimedia Publishing, Inc. He now enjoys the good life in retirement in Santa Barbara and recently published a one-of-a-kind memoir of his time with Warner Brothers:

The fast Bendix racer of John Hallowell and Keith Baddock suffered a blown glowplug in one heat then another one in the final. Finished second. Finalists in the Vintage A teamrace from left to right were Stan Pilgrim/Peter Camps, John Hallowell/Keith Baddock, and Richard Justic/Andy Kerr. Pilots at work in the final of Classic B teamrace from left to right were Graeme Wilson, John Hallowell in overtaking mode, and Richard Justic. I broadly agree with a seq id marker solution, and it would be quite
easy to implement. If the client fails to receive the new set of
codebooks the periodic codebook retransmission should bring the client
back in step (but will your speaker cones be embedded in the opposite
wall by then?). There is, however, the possibility of a much better solution - TCP over RTP. This issue was discussed again on the AVT list last month and
