    Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Civil Rights Leader, Minister, Nobel Peace Prize Recipient Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., a Baptist minister from Atlanta, was one of the most prominent figures in the civil rights movement which succeeded in achieving legal equality for African-Americans. He co-founded and served as the first president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, organized to promote the advancement of integration and legal and social equality. Dr. King was the recipient of numerous awards which recognized his outstanding work for non-violent social change, including the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. In 1986, Dr. King's birthday became a national holiday in recognition of his enormous contributions to American history. Martin Luther King, Jr., was born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia. At the age of 15, he entered Morehouse College. At the age of 18, he was ordained a Baptist minister at the Ebenezer Baptist Church, the church led by his father and previously by his grandfather. After completing his studies at Morehouse, he entered Crozer Theological Seminary, graduating as valedictorian in 1951, and went on to earn a doctorate in theology from Boston University. During his theological studies he was exposed to the writing of Mohandas Gandhi, whose teachings formed the basis of Dr. King's philosophy of non-violence. In 1953, he married Coretta Scott with whom he had two sons and two daughters. In 1953, Dr. King became pastor of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama. In 1955, the arrest of Rosa Parks for refusal to give up her seat on a Montgomery city bus sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Dr. King was called upon to lead the year-long boycott, during which he endured the first of many arrests for fighting unjust laws. Dr. King's stand against segregation and his commitment to working for non-violent social change catapulted him to national prominence.

    I Have a Dream Speech

Come in, make yourself at home! My name is Roz Fruchtman and I would like to invite you to join us on our journey back through a very important time in the history of the African American people and the United States of America. Today we are going to rediscover Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his great works and what he meant and still means to us today!
KING, Martin Luther, Jr. (1929-68). Inspired by the belief that love and peaceful protest could eliminate social injustice, Martin Luther King, Jr., became one of the outstanding black leaders in the United States. He aroused whites and blacks alike to protest racial discrimination, poverty, and war. A champion of nonviolent resistance to oppression, he was awarded the Nobel peace prize in 1964.
Martin Luther King, Jr., was born in Atlanta, Ga., on Jan. 15, 1929. His father, Martin, Sr., was the pastor of the Ebenezer Baptist Church, a black congregation. His mother, Alberta Williams King, was a schoolteacher. Martin had an older sister, Christine, and a younger brother, Alfred Daniel. Martin encountered racism at an early age. When he was 6, his friendship with two white playmates was cut short by their parents. When he was 11 a white woman struck him and called him a "nigger." A bright student, he was admitted to Morehouse College at 15, without completing high school. He decided to become a minister and at 18 was ordained in his father's church. After graduating from Morehouse in 1948, he entered Crozer Theological Seminary in Chester, Pa. He was the valedictorian of his class in 1951 and won a graduate fellowship. At Boston University he received a Ph.D. in theology in 1955.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.(1929-1968) These key ideas came from the book Understanding Catholic Christianity by Thomas Zanzig. These key ideas have been explained in more detail in the SLUH Freshman Theology Class.
I feel that one key idea that is illustrated in the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is the idea of worldviews. In King's life, the worldview of many white people was that blacks were inferior and should not be treated like white people. This worldview was very prejudiced. King had a different worldview. His idea was illustrated very well in his "I Have A Dream!" speech that he made in front of a very large crowd. King's worldview was that all of mankind should be brothers and sisters and that they should live together in peace and harmony. This is very much like the Christian worldview that is illustrated in Zanzig. The Christian religion rejects nothing that is holy or sacred and welcomes all people into their community. That is how the Christian worldview is illustrated in the life of Martin Luther King.
Another key idea from the text that is illustrated in the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is the idea of the Paschal Mystery. Through Jesus' death on the cross, much life was brought forth and the Church began its ministry. The Paschal Mystery is illustrated very clearly in the life of Dr. King. Throughout all of these protests, Dr. King knew that he might be killed. However, he took that risk and shared his message with the entire world. On April 4th, 1968, Dr. King was shot by James Earl Ray. Ray was sentenced to 99 years in prison. There was much sorrow about King's death. However, much good in the black community came forth after his death. Many people in the black community now had the courage to take a stand, just like Dr. King did. Many white people re-evaluated their prejudices. This is how the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. illustrates the Paschal Mystery.

    Martin Luther King Jr.
Martin Luther King Jr. (1929-1968) was an American black Baptist minister who led the Civil Rights Movement in the United States from the mid 50s until his death. King's greatest success was the ending of legal segregation of blacks in the US.
King was born in Atlanta on 15 January 1929. At the age of 15 he entered Morehouse College under a special program for gifted students. At Crozer Theological Seminary in Chester, Pennsylvania, King became acquainted with Ghandi's philosophy of nonviolence. After Crozer King went to Boston University where he began to focus on the relationship of man to God.
In 1953 King married Coretta Scott and had four children. King was appointed as a pastor at the Baptist Church in Montgomery.
In December 1955 a black woman refused to surrender her bus seat to a white passenger. The woman, Rosa Parks, was arrested for violating the segregation law. The Montgomery Improvement Association was formed to boycott the transit system and King became the leader of the protest association. King became a national prominence through the organization of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.

    King Jr., Martin Luther (1929-1968)
A nation or civilization that continues to produce soft-minded men purchases its own spiritual death on an installment plan. Everybody can be great ... because anybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love. Forgiveness does not mean ignoring what has been done or putting a false label on an evil act. It means, rather, that the evil act no longer remains as a barrier to the relationship. I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become reality. I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word. If a man is called to be a streetsweeper, he should sweep streets even as Michelangelo painted, or Beethoven composed music, or Shakespeare wrote poetry. He should sweep streets so well that all the host of heaven and earth will pause to say, here lived a great streetsweeper who did his job well.
