    William Kirby (1817-1906)
Text from A Century of Canadian Sonnets
    Montmorency
The Master saith, "Look in thy heart and write
What thou hast heard the voices say, within
The flashing rainbows and the mist, the din
And avalanche of waters snowy white,
Of Montmorency leaping down the height."
I feel the throbbing of the joyous linn
Keep time and measure with my pulses in
A thrilling symphony of sound and sight.
For history, poetry, and wild romance,
The old, the new, Nature's exuberance
Peace, war, and lovelove still the best of all
Their story here on every side I learn,
And Wolfe's and Montcalm's rival camps discern
In the long thunder of the roaring fall.

    William Kirby (1817-1906)
Sonnet Read at the Unveiling of the
Lundy s Lane Monument, 25 th July, 1895
Stand fast! Stand fast! Stand fast! A mighty cry
Rang from the British line at Lundy s Lane.
Close up your ranks! Stand fast! The foes again
Swarm up the hill, where our brave colours fly,
And Drummond shouts, A To conquer or to die.
Mid roar of guns that rend the heavens in twain,
Our flashing bayonets back upon the plain
Hurl down their columns B heaps on heaps they lie B
And Canada, like Greece at Marathon,
Stands victor on the field of freedom won. This pillar fair of sculptured stone will show Forever, in the light of glory, how England and Canada stood fast that night At Lundy s Lane, and conquered for the right. Source: Kevin McCabe, ed. The Poetry of Old Niagara. St. Catharines, Ont. : Blarney Stone Books, 1999. Originally published: "Annals of Niagara." Niagara Falls : Lundy's Lane Historical Society, 1896.

    16. Canadian Spoons
William Kirby(18171906) published the Golden Dog 1877 and revised in 1896.This information was given to me by Peter Kaellgren of the ROM museum. .

Spoons A very large percentage of the Canadian Souvenir Spoons have enamel finials. This seems to have been a general trend and it adds to a spoons character.
    Maple Leafs
I definitely enjoy the spoons where one color spreads into the next. The Autumn Maple leaf spoons are particularly pretty in this regards. 1. bowl: Macdonald Hall, Guelph 2. Bowl: "The Bore", Petitcodiac River, Moncton, N.B. 3. bowl: acid engraved Dunville, Ontario 4. bowl: engraved "Simcoe" This gold plated spoon has extensive enamel work including the maple leaf and around the edge. The bowl has an embossed picture of the Ontario Parliament Building, Toronto. This is a particularly beautiful spoon. A very similar piece with different enameling is shown on the other Canada page. 1. bowl engraved Prince Rupert, B.C. 2. bowl engraved Hamilton 3. bowl engraved Toronto 3 maple leafs Bowl embossed picture of the Ottawa Parliament Building
    Dog Gnawing Bone
The finial shows a dog and an inscription in French The back has a translation in English: "I am a dog gnawing a bone" "While I am gnawing I take my rest A time will come which has not yet come when I will bite those who have bitten me" The following information about this dog has been supplied to me: "I call this one the Golden Dog, The Le chien d'or, a carved stone
