Ed Krol grew up in the Chicago area. He has been involved with various computing and communications duties for the past 20 years. Now he is Assistant Director of the Computing and Communication Service Office at the University of Illinois. He also writes a monthly column about current Internet technologies for Network World. Ed became involved with networking in 1985 when the University of Illinois created a campus networking group. One of his first tasks was to get the National Center for Supercomputing Applications connected to the Internet. He then received a grant to build and manage the original National Science Foundation network (NSFnet). As he worked on this task he discovered there was little documentation in the area. So to help those NSFnet was connecting, he wrote an on-line help guide for people trying to run Internet connections, "The Hitchikers Guide to the Internet." Returning to university duties, Ed's next project was to head a group charged with connecting every employee desktop and student lab in the university to the Internet. In the process, he recognized the lack of end user documentation about the Internet. Therefore, in 1992 he wrote "The Whole Internet User's Guide and Catalog," one of the best selling and most well-received computer books of the 90's. e-krol@uiuc.edu

I guess that is what many people say. I'm glad it is that much use to people, it is certainly not what I expected to happen. I expected to write a not stuffy Internet handbook and then return to my life at the University of Illinois. Now I am so busy dealing with being an "Internet guru" that I have little time to live life. I am not particularly comfortable being a guru, since I have been at the Internet about 10 years and there are lots of other people who have been doing it longer. How do you feel about most Internet books being Unix based? I think the Unix bias is still a fact of life it you are trying to use the Internet. Most of the best applications are still developed on Unix platforms, even if they move to other platforms later. For example, Mosaic-if I want the latest version I must run the X version. The other problem is that as you traverse the Internet you run into many creeping Unixisms. Like Mosaic telnets to some resource for you, more likely than not you might find it handy that a CNTL-U throws a line away. Even if you are using Eudora to do your mail, it doesn't come directly to your mac, you need to have a Unix POP account somewhere actually doing the work for you Is it true that you also use a PowerBook?

Spring 1994 Index Main Index Ed Krol Pens a Best Seller: The Whole Internet finds a vast audience Programmer Ed Krol, BS'73, began collecting tidbits of information about the Internet to help him with his job at CSO. Little did he know that he had the seeds of a best-seller in his notes. The unexpected success of his book now has Krol burdened with the label "Internet guru." Ed Krol, author of the best-selling book The Whole Internet , a user's guide to Internet navigation, has become something of a celebrity. The fact that the press considers him an Internet guru is something that continues to amaze Krol, who has finished writing a second edition of the book, due out this spring. Krol is assistant director of CCSO and has been on campus ever since he was a freshman in 1969. Originally from Elmwood Park, he came to U of I to study physics. In keeping with the times, Krol changed to something more "relevant": politicalscience. After taking CS 101 as a required course, however, Krol got back into the technical fold as a math/CS major. He was a member of the first graduating class within the CS curriculum in engineering. Krol recalled his "most amazing class," CS 201 (now CS 221), taught by Don Gillies. The class's first task was to get a DEC PDP-11 up and running so that the course could be taught on this machine. "Not only did the machine arrive late," recalled Krol, "but it arrived in a state where it wouldn't do anything. So the first thing we had to do was toggle in a teletype driver with the little switches on the front. I learned more about machines in that class." By the end of the semester, some graduate students were able to get the card reader to work.
