MODIS Land Overview
Table of Contents
Simplified data flow diagram illustrating the interrelationships between MODLAND's algorithms. Solar spectral irradiance is shown as a function of wavelength, with respect to the MODIS bands that will be used by MODLAND to gather biospheric data. Land surface reflectance as a function of wavelength, to be measured by MODIS.
General Introduction
MODIS will be the primary EOS sensor for providing data on the Earth's biospheric dynamics. MODLAND is developing remote sensing algorithms for deriving time-series data products on various terrestrial geophysical parameters. These products will be used by the Earth science community which will include integration into conceptual and predictive Earth systems models. MODIS data will be carefully processed to provide well-quantified and calibrated data sets of the Earth's surface, corrected for instrument radiometry, geometric distortions, atmospheric attenuation, topographic variation, and cloud effects. The MODLAND data products include spectral albedo, land cover, spectral vegetation indices, snow and ice cover, surface (and fire) temperature, and a number of biophysical variables that will contribute to an improved understanding of global carbon cycles, hydrologic balances, and biogeochemical cycles. The near daily, repetitive coverage by the planned MODIS instruments will permit an assessment of global change.

The University of Maryland Cooperation with CARPE Project Title: "The University of Maryland Cooperation with CARPE" PI(s): Chistopher Justice , Michel Massart, Nadine Laporte, Mark Heinicke Description: Introduction to The University of Maryland Cooperation with CARPE The University of Maryland component would be a regional initiative focused around improved monitoring of the forest resources of the region, undertaken by NASA/ GSFC in close cooperation with the Geography Department at the University of Maryland, the national forest services and NGO communities, leading towards a better understanding of the state of the forests, the extent and location of forest degradation and the development of a regional forest management plan. Active collaboration is also being sought with the NGO community. In the first three years of the project the objective will be to develop strong and active African partnerships with the Pathfinder program and establish the CARPE needs for satellite data and coordinate the various forest monitoring components of the CARPE projects. Emphasis would be given to involving African nationals in the data interpretation and verification of satellite derived maps and would include a strong training component on the use of remote sensing data and GIS (Activity 4). The activity would involve a strong . data and information sharing component and would be undertaken in the context of the CARPE information working group. This activity would provide the African collaborators with the available high resolution satellite data, the tools for satellite monitoring, an improved understanding of the state of the forests and the basis for developing improved regional forest management plans.

Southwest U.S. Change Detection Images from the EROS Data Center
Reno and Lake Tahoe, Nevada
by Kristi Sayler, U.S. Geological Survey A matched pair of satellite images from different years can be processed into a new change-detection image, which shows areas of increased or decreased brightness, greenness, or wetness. These images can be used to monitor landscape changes. These images of the Reno-Lake Tahoe area of Nevada, show some effects of natural processes on the landscape:
Burn area
Extensive changes resulting from forest fires can be observed in satellite images. Changes in greenness, displayed here as a dark blue color, show an area of vegetation which has become blackened from burning.
Conifer mortality
Scientists at Boston University have made ground measurements to quantify the decrease in the forest canopy as a result of drought. The sustained drought conditions weakened the trees and made them more susceptible to insect attacks. Satellite images can be used to estimate the geographic extent of the damaged area.
Forest clear-cutting
Droughts increase the geographic extent of exposed lakebeds, where new vegetation can be seen using satellite images. Changes in land use or timber harvesting activities can also be seen in this forested area.

    Lansat Pathfinder Project
    Overview
The NASA Landsat Pathfinder Project is an endeavor to quantify and study global deforestation, especially deforestation of tropical rainforests. This project is part of both NASA's Mission to Planet Earth Program and the Earth Observing System Data and Information System, a joint global monitoring system and data interpreting system which collects data and forecasts trends in global physical characteristics such as climate, greenhouse gases, land use, and the hydrologic cycle. The Earth Observing System has been monitoring the earth by satellite for over twenty years. The data found is compared to estimate the change in environmental conditions. Scientists can use this information to determine where critical sources of degradation occur. Using results of the scientist's findings, governments and NGO's can prioritize their policies and objectives to focus both on areas of crisis and areas in which their energy will be most effective. *Most of my information was derived from the extensive information available in the NASA Landsat Pathfinder Project page and the related Earth Observing System page.

    Land Cover Mapping
Large area land cover mapping projects incorporating remotely sensed data
A preliminary survey of projects utilizing remotely sensed data to map large areas from provincial/state, national, regional, continental, to global. Draft Version
    Abstract
The purpose of this document is to provide an overview of large area land cover mapping projects that have used remotely sensed data to aid in the design of a satellite mapping program for Canada. The areas covered in the surveyed projects range from provincial/state, national, regional, continental, to global. The survey material will be hyperlinked to the source material, if possible, or referenced to the source documentation. Rather than solely providing the link pertinent sections of the summaries are included in this document to create a source for comparison and evaluation of the projects and methodologies applied. This sharing of information is intended to aid in the cooperative design of an approach appropriate for mapping the forest area of Canada with fine resolution satellite data. The projects must be compared with care due to differences in characteristics such as cost, area covered, technology available, time allotted for completion, attribute suite, accuracy of attributes, and spatial resolution of data. An attempt has been made to create a relatively exhaustive survey. The wide scope of the survey will inevitably result in significant omissions. Any suggestions that will address an omission or allow for improvement of this document is welcome.
