"Unfaithful" Synopsis:
Edward (Richard Gere) and Connie (Diane Lane) have a satisfying marriage. Their young son Charlie (Erik Per Sullivan) is a good kid, the family is well off, and apparently all are in good health. Despite these outward appearances - or maybe because of them - Connie becomes sexually involved with Paul (Olivier Martinez), a handsome foreigner she met briefly during a wild windstorm. As Connie and Paul's passionate affair heats up, Edward begins to suspect there's something going wrong with his once happy marriage. When Edward uncovers the truth, the consequences of all their actions will forever shatter their once peaceful lives. "Unfaithful" is a sexy, erotic thriller with a cast of mature actors who deliver some of their finest performances. Director Adrian Lyne allows the movie to make its own way, unrushed and with great patience, so that the audience can get to know each of the main characters. The film builds ever so steadily to its dramatic climax, allowing audiences to become transfixed with the intimate lives of this doomed love triangle.

THE AMAZING SAGA OF ANNE PERRY
Master of Mystery
Creator of Brilliant Charactors and Plots
Designer of Authenic Atmospheres
Historian of Substance
Social Commentator of Penetrating Intelligence
Teacher of Distinction
Anne Perry, one of this earth's foremost mystery creators, also stands tall as an important historian of the Victorian Era. We "regular" historians have acknowledged our reliance on key historical novelists for new and now accepted insights into major periods of human history: Jean Auel ( Clan of the Cave Bear ), Coleen McCullough (her novels of ancient Rome) , Margaret George (Mary, Queen of Scots and Cleopatra) - and Anne Perry to note a few. As important, in ripping away the pretty masks that conceal society's darkest transgressions, Ms. Perry reminds us that the sins of the past remain with us today - but she does so in such a manner that gives us time to reflect and connect and realize. Whether it be poverty, squalor, hatred - or prejudice, racism, sexism, - or dominance, maniupulation, blackmail, - or adultery, and pedophilia, - or abuse, rape, prostitution, - or snobbery, human disdain, these great moral issues become the reader's own. And, of course, the tales and the characters and the plots themselves. Brilliantly drawn, intriguing, dramatic, entertaining.

Pete Smith (Horse) A. woman without remorse or conscience, her embittered, crippled companion, a young girl and her emasculated father are the luckless characters in Alison Maclean's pseudo-feminist schlock-thriller, Crush. While tension in the first half of the film is well sustained by Marcia Gay Harden's performance as the calculating, misanthropic and charismatic Lane, the plot dissolves into a B-grade melodrama during the second half, with a predictable and unconvincing denouement. Lane is an enigma; like a feral cat she lives on her wits, ruled by a hedonistic agenda. Stranded in an alien country after surviving a car crash, her first reaction is to steal her companion's diary and leave her to die in the wreckage. What follows is reminiscent of the cross-cutting in Nicolas Roeg's Bad Timing: in a series of quick mid-shots and close-ups, Lane soaks in a bath while her companion, Christina (Donogh Rees), is receiving emergency treatment. Pitched against Lane's calm is chaos which now fills the mind of Christina, whose career has been destroyed by Lane's provocative behaviour. The cross-cutting reinforces the ambiguous relationship between them: Are they lovers or casual strangers? On one level, Lane's bathing, watching plump drops of water escape the faucet, is symbolic of her washing away her crime. In the interim, Christina, bathed in blood, wrestles with her life, spilt blood releasing a primal reaction, demonstrated by Christina's revenge during the film's second half. Despite Lane's attempts to wash away the past, symbollcally she will forever carry the bloodstains.

Production On February 24th, 1965, story editor Dennis Spooner invited John Lucarotti, who had last written The Aztecs a year earlier, to submit a new historical story idea to the Doctor Who production office. After a discussion with former series director Waris Hussein, Lucarotti's first initiative was to set his story around the Indian Mutiny of 1857 (which had also been the basis of Terry Nation's aborted The Red Fort ). WHO'S GREAT
I disagree entirely with Professor Marc Landy's contention that there have been no great presidents since FDR ["Monumental achievements," Summer 2000]. Whatever blemishes the Watergate scandal has left, the fact remains, as President Clinton said in his eulogy, that "the time for judging Richard Nixon on the basis of one aspect of his life is long over."
Nixon is still the man who ended the Vietnam War and brought home the American POWs, strengthened the American military when it had grown dangerously weak, initiated the first meaningful arms-limitation talks, opened up China to Western diplomacy and business, improved our relations with the Soviet Union, launched one of the most effective crackdowns on organized crime in our nation's history, integrated the vast majority of the American South's schools in a constitutional manner, made giant strides toward peace in the Middle East, turned around the American economy after a long slump, restored law and order to American campuses, to some degree successfully defended American business against unconstitutional socialistic legislation, and gave 18-year-olds the right to vote.

The Mail's Memory Lane page has always been popular with our readers. The format has never changed and those who say nostalgia aint what it used to be should look at the response we get to the page from our readers. When we are not sure about a photograph we always ask for help from Memory Lane fans. Well almost always. This week we carried a picture of the back of someone's head. Even so, we knew it was Princess Anne. Unfortunately the lady in the picture who was meeting her wasn't so easily identified even though she'd been looking straight at the camera. Our sub editors were convinced it was former councillor Gwynneth Hanson who was meeting the princess. They tell me they'd made a genuine mistake and did so because of Mrs Hanson's well-known love of hats. We are now told that the magnificent hat creation was perched on the head of Alderman Rene Tuson. Sorry for the mistake and thanks for all the people who called to point out the error. I'm in no mood, or fit state at the moment, for running. But that doesn't mean I'm not up for a challenge.

In Unfaithful , an adaptation of Claude Chabrol’s La Femme Infidele To the credit of much-maligned director Adrian Lyne (and writers Alvin Sargent and William Broyles, Jr.), Unfaithful breathes with a freedom from the Freudianness of other films dying to explain odd behavior, films like his take on Lolita In this package of stardust infidelity is the obligatory juxtaposition of New York suburbs and New York City, which is fundamentally old hat but not officially lame thanks to cinematographer Peter Biziou ( The Truman Show, Mississippi Burning ) and editor Anne V. Coates ( Out of Sight, Lawrence of Arabia ). When you have a creative team like this, one that consists of two glorious cinematic histories, you can ease up on Adrian Lyne’s misdeeds (about which many may argue: Flashdance, 9 ½ Weeks, Indecent Proposal ). There’s something about Coates’ style, as it has evolved or adapted in recent years, that is individualistic and very distinctive, so much so that her latest work has become a part of the overall look of the films she’s been involved with, whereas, in the past, editing may have only been associated with a feel. We may not be able to detect an Anne V. Coates film from the get-go, but when her name appears in the titles, we might have a sense of recognition or hindsight bias. Now she has brought the flavor she developed in the Steven Soderbergh Hollywood movies, with those chic punch line cuts, to
