My Life as a Domestic House Cat
(Essay by Edward Gerrish Mair)
This essay may appeal more to the cat lovers among you, however, I think anyone will understand some of the sentiments. Have you ever l
Well, I have often wondered what such a life would be like and now I know! I will tell you, but first let's paint in a bit of the background. I live on Plum Island, a barrier beach island just off the coast near the Massachusetts border with New Hampshire. If you start at the Atlantic ocean and walk west, Plum Island consists of beach, primary sand dunes, secondary dunes, inter-dunal woods, marsh and swamp. Then one crosses the Plum Island River and more salt marshes before coming to the more solid upland of Newburyport, Newbury, and Rowley.
I live in a small cottage perched up on a secondary dune perhaps 600 yards from the beach. In back of the cottage is a glacial formation called a kettle hole, which is essentially a low area surrounded by dunes in which small trees can grow protected from the wind and salt spray of the barrier beach environment. The cottage is surrounded by natural vegetation such as beach plums, bayberry, poison ivy, black cherry trees, bittersweet, beach grass, and a few ornamental plantings. The woods in the back are very private. The view out the front shows small slices of ocean peeking between numerous beach houses and a lot of sky.

Library of American Civilization titles available free on the Web
    Compiled by Terry Ballard
    Introduction
This project grew out of the frustration that our users often felt when using the Library of American Civilization micro-microfiche cards owned by our library. While the titles add depth to our holdings in 19th century American works, the cards could only be read on one machine in our library, and the quality was often poor at best. One day it occurred to me to hire a student to check the list of LAC holdings in our opac against the list of online titles maintained by the University of Pennsylvania. We found hundreds of hits. We added links to those records in our catalog and then posted the information to this file. The process was repeated in 2002, and we added 90 more titles. Also, I made a complete check of the links and corrected dozens of titles that had changed locations. Since this check will not be repeated for some time, plan to check the link above when any of these links do not work. Adams, Henry, 1838-1918.

AUTHOR INDEX TO OUR YOUNG FOLKS
Our Young Folks published works by almost every nineteenth-century writer for children, from Sophie May to Harriet Beecher Stowe; it also featured fine engravings, including a handful by Winslow Homer. While the periodical's run ended in 1873, because my interest is only in works through 1872, the last year is not indexed here. Alphabetized by author's real name (where known); use control-F to search for pseudonym. Author's birth/death dates appear after the name; titles are in alphabetical order. Number after each title is made up of the following: year.month.pages. For pieces of music, listed author wrote the words to the song. For engravings, "drawn by" is the one given credit, except in the case of Landseer and of Frederick Church. KEY: /chromo = chromolithograph; /e = engraving; /p = piece is a poem; /s = piece is music

The Museum featured works by almost every nineteenth-century writer for children, from Jacob Abbott to Sophie May; it also excerpted works for adults, among them Herman Melville. Especially during 1857-1867, the magazine printed pieces written by its subscribers: some adults, many not. Alphabetized by author's real name (where known); use control-F to search for pseudonym. Except for Melville, ONLY SIGNED PIECES ARE LISTED HERE. Author's birth/death dates appear after the name; pseudonyms are listed just before titles, which are in alphabetical order. Number after each title is the year the piece was printed. Authors who were subscribers are marked with an asterisk (*). For page numbers, see " By title ".
