When Rome was destroyed, most of the knowledge of the previous centuries was lost for 100's of years. Gone was the wisdom of the Greeks and the ingenuity of the Romans. This period of stagnation is known as the middle ages (or dark ages), and lasted from about the year 450 to 1400. The Arabs, who translated Greek writings, had an edge in education during this period. In the mid-12th century, European scholars translated the Arabic writings on medicine, arithmetic, geography, astronomy and science. This led to an increase in knowledge and lead to the period of time known as the Renaissance. The migrating Germanic and Scandinavian peoples, who spread from northern Europe southward, westward, eastward had much to do with the darkening and the awakening of Europe. The Germans, French, English and Italians would become leaders of the Renaissance, which spanned from the 14th to the 16th centuries. After the Germanic tribes sacked Rome, later migrations (under various names) of the Germanic/Scandinavian peoples went into England, Ireland, France, Russia, Italy and Spain. While there was little increase in knowledge in Europe or anywhere else in the world during these years, there was a conversion of the European peoples to Christianity and this helped somewhat, taking some of the edge off of these peoples. It is sad to say, however, that there was little understanding and obedience of the true Faith. The religion they had was pray today, kill tomorrow, plunder the next — hardly Messianic. Even though most of the Europeans were subject to fear and oppression by their kings, barons, the Catholic Church and Viking and Arab raids, there were some bright spot in the midst of all this, although enjoyed by the few.

The Quality of Witness Fr. David Curry "For with thee is the well of life;/and in thy light shall we see light" (Ps.36.9) Words and deeds are nets to the soul, things that ever catch our attention. A word spoken may make or break our day, lift us up or cast us down. An action done may stop us in our tracks or make us change our course, compel us, come what may. How much more so when words spoken and deeds done form a perfect complement and give a single significance? Then, our attention is doubly snared. There is in God this unity of Word and Action. He is that unity in Himself and He is that unity in us when by His grace we become what we are in His glory. God speaks and God acts. His words are all actions. His actions are but His words in motion - in creation, in redemption, in sanctification. For behind the words there is God's personal Word, God's Word and Son in the bond of the Holy Spirit, "the only-begotten of the Father full of grace and truth" (John 1.14). And that Word, that Holy and Divine Word has become the thing done, "the Word made flesh" (John 1.14), that we might do with him what we would, for that is all our evil, and yet "of his fullness have we all received grace upon grace" (John 1.16). We have all received because we have all beheld the Word spoken in the thing done. But between the beholding and the receiving comes a crucial parenthesis. We can only receive what has been given to us to behold by the quality of the witness: "John bore witness to him and cried, `This was he of whom I said, He who comes after me is before me, for he was before me'" (John 1.15). The Word of God is the Word made flesh who comes to us that "in thy light, shall we see light" (Ps.36.9), but only through his witnesses.

excerpts from Care Corner News LABOUR OF LOVE by Lim K Tham I n a letter to the Christian believers in Thessalonica, the apostle Paul commends them for being virtuous in faith, love and hope. He writes, “Remembering without ceasing your work of faith, and labour of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ, in the sight of God and our Father.” (1 Thes 1:3). In this particular verse three things may be said about love. Love is outgoing First, love like the virtues of faith and hope, is outgoing. Each virtue is directed towards something beyond itself. Thus, faith is directed towards God, love towards others, and hope towards the future. John Powell in his book Why am I Afraid to Love says, “love demands self-forgetfulness.” The question to test if we truly love is: “Can we really forget ourselves?” Beware of counterfeit products on the market which are called love but which in fact are falsely named. Anabaptists Summary The term Anabaptist has come to be applied to a broad religious movement at the beginning of the Radical Reformation (1520-1580). Anabaptism was not a centralized or homogeneous sect. The early origins of the Anabaptist are still being debated. There have been estimates of up to forty independent sects within the general category of what has been termed Anabaptism. Anabaptist comes from the Greek meaning "rebaptiser". The term was usually used as a form of derision. Individuals did not refer to themselves as Anabaptists, some groups used the term Brethren to describe themselves. By 1525, Anabaptist congregations were spreading across most of German speaking Europe. Continental Anabaptist congregations rejected the corrupted doctrines and practices of the Roman Church, and the new Reformed Protestants Churches of the Reformation. Anabaptists sought instead to reestablish a true Christian community based on their concepts of the early New Testaments congregations. They saw themselves as the new saints of the one true Church. Regional leaders, or "Spirituals" as there were also known often established the norms for the local Anabaptist congregation under their leadership. This treasure was hidden by earth - covered by base things of this world. But it was also hidden in the hearts of men that the world might know that the transcendent power belongs to God. In this story the man first hid it for fear that it will be taken away from him. But in his joy he went and sold everything he had and bought it. We shall see how this has come about in this period in history. 6.3 GOD SHOWS HIS TRANSCENDENCE We have seen how during the period of the State Church, the clergy became more and more powerful until the Church became the State under Papal Empire of Rome. Though it was more prominent in Rome, the same type of growth took place in other parts of world to a lesser extent. The legalism and rituals and external coverings hid the true Gospel. In the accelerated development of the priestcraft, the word of God was finally taken away from the people. God now stepped in. He brought out by the might of his spirit people who had access to the written word of God - some of the clergy, professors in clerical seminaries and the monks - to open up their eyes and see the hidden treasure. They were able to see the real Gospel of Salvation through Christ by Grace. The interesting thing is that this discovery was not confined to one place. It cropped up in all parts of the world almost simultaneously.

In his sixth article J. N. Andrews stated the same concept. "After seven of these weeks of years came the year of jubilee." Lev. 25:8-10. In this year liberty was proclaimed throughout all the land to all its inhabitants, and every man returned to his own inheritance. This signifies that after the great Sabbath, during which the earth will remain uncultivated for 1,000 years, the great week of 7,000 years being finished, the curse will cease, after having consumed the earth with all who are wicked. Then the earth will be created anew by the power of God, and all the just will return to their inheritance in the new earth, and never know sin nor sorrow any more." (J. N. Andrews, "The Great Week of Time," Review and Herald, Aug. 21, 1883) The provisions of the jubilee thus reach their logical fulfillment at the creation of the new earth when the meek are granted their inheritance along with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. (See Hebrews 11:8-16.) The second point of discussion in this chapter is how the weekly (seven) cycle and the sabbatical year help us understand the prophecies of Daniel. When we see this connection it is then very clear that the weekly and yearly cycles of seven do indeed have prophetic or predictive elements. William Shea has done a thorough study of this topic. He states, when commenting on Leviticus 25:8, "A literal translation of the opening clause of Lev. 25:8 reads: ‘You shall count seven Sabbaths of years, seven years seven times, and to you the days of the seven Sabbaths of years shall be forty-nine years.’

Everyone have a happy Thanksgiving. • Our Christmas dinner will be next Wednesday, Dec. 4, at 6:30 p.m. at the home of Robert and Jane Margeson. The church will provide the dinner, but any donations to defray expenses would be appreciated. We need to know how many to prepare for. Please contact or call Susan Wages at 883-1384 and let her know how many will be attending with you. We will begin our special meeting with Pastor Henry Mahan on Friday, December 6, at 7:00 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, will be at 6:30 p.m.; Sunday, Dec. 8, will be our regular meeting times.
