Famous Australians
Henry Lawson 1867-1922 by John Quinn WHO Henry Lawson was a poet and prose writer. During his troubled life, he enjoyed immense popularity being known as "The People's Poet." BIRTH Henry Lawson was born in 1867 in a small town called Pipeclay. Pipeclay was situated near Mudgee in NSW. He was born in a tent, a humble beginning, for one of Australia's best poets. EDUCATION Lawson's schooling took place in an old bark building in Pipeclay. The school itself, Lawson made famous in his poem "The old bark school." It was built of bark and poles, and the roof was full of holes And each leak in rainy weather made a pool; And the walls were mostly slats lined with calico and sacks- There was little need for windows in the school. Lawson had an uneasy relationship with his teacher and fellow pupils. He seemed to have a horror of going to school. His mum later decided to enrol him for night-time classes FAMILY LIFE At 28, Lawson met a lady named Bertha Bredt and they were soon in love. They quickly decided to marry. A good friend said Henry would be a difficult husband but Bertha was determined to be a good wife. Henry proved to be a stable and amenable husband although Bertha could not stop him from too much drinking. Bertha found him a job at a Mouri school in New Zealand. When their first baby was due they returned to Wellington and then back to Sydney. They had been married for 2 years. He tried yet another start and his eyes turned to England. They set sail in 1900 with two children. He had success for 2 years. Because of alcohol he became homesick and unhappy. Bertha's third child died at birth and she applied for a legal separation when he was 36. His personal life was a sad record and his heart had gone out of writing.

    Henry Lawson (1867-1922) A Prouder Man Than You After All Taking His Chance The Drover's Sweetheart ... The Free-Selector's Daughter
    A Prouder Man Than You If you fancy that your people came of better stock than mine,
    If you hint of higher breeding by a word or by a sign,
    If you're proud because of fortune or the clever things you do
    Then I'll play no second fiddle: I'm a prouder man than you! If you think that your profession has the more gentility,
    And that you are condescending to be seen along with me;
    If you notice that I'm shabby while your clothes are spruce and new
    You have only got to hint it: I'm a prouder man than you! If you have a swell companion when you see me on the street,
    And you think that I'm too common for your toney friend to meet,
    So that I, in passing closely, fail to come within your view
    Then be blind to me for ever: I'm a prouder man than you! If your character be blameless, if your outward past be clean, While 'tis known my antecedents are not what they should have been

    [Note on content: Banjo Paterson and Henry Lawson were writing for
    the Sydney `Bulletin' in 1892 when Lawson suggested a `duel' of poetry
    to increase the number of poems they could sell to the paper.
    It was apparently entered into in all fun, though there are reports
    that Lawson was bitter about it later. `Up the Country' and `The City Bushman', included in this selection, were two of Lawson's contributions to the debate. Please note that this is the revised edition of 1900. Therefore, even though this book was originally published in 1896, it includes two poems not published until 1899 (`The Sliprails and the Spur' and `Past Carin'').] First Edition printed February 1896, Reprinted August 1896, October 1896, March 1898, and November 1898; Revised Edition, January 1900;

    Summary
    Henry Lawson 1867-1922 "Henry Lawson holds a unique place in Australian and possibly in world literature. Alone of creative writers in this country, he lived to see the emergent nation adopt his interpretation of its way of life as equivalent to a sense of identity. By a singular and fortuitous combination of author, time, place and circumstance he welded his ideal of mateship, as a code, to the world's most sparsely settled continent - a land in which men measured distance not in miles but in time and tribulation, as perhaps they measured life itself. He achieved it in poetry and the short story, in forms that went straight to the hearts of his readers, as they have done ever since. "Lawson belongs to the select band of authors who did not have to be rescued from obscurity by scholars and critics, although their abiding interest and, sometimes bewilderment, has followed in the wake of generations of readers who continue to read him for the simple pleasure it gives them. To write one's way into the hearts and minds of a people is given to few authors - Lawson is one of them." Walter Stone

    Charles Dickens
    Autograph letter from Dickens to "Mr Gibson", Dover, Seventh September, 1852. 1p, fold, 18 x 11.5cm.
    Dickens apologises for not availing himself of (John) Gibson's proposal whilst in Newcastle "and even from answering the note until now - in his first leisure moment". Together with a note dated January 7th 1914 stating the letter's provenance. Charles Dickens (1812-1870), perhaps England's greatest novelist, combined his literary career with a variety of social and theatrical interests.
    Ernest Hemmingway
    Autograph letter signed, from Hemingway to Rupert (?),sending Christmas greetings from Idaho, c.1950s. A Unicef greetings card, the note written sideways across the fold, signed "Ernesto", 1p. Mounted together with contemporary deckle-edge photograph of the Hemingways, c.1950s.
    Hemingway's note, written below a note from Mary Hemingway - "Back to Cuba in Feb" - reads in part: "Have been working here and shooting since October 5th. Book going very well… We are settled here until end February. Things different in Cuba now…" Perhaps Hemingway was working on The Old Man and the Sea (1952), or a short story? Other Hemingway (1899-1961) photographs and ephemera are available at the Gallery.

    Master in Lunacy
    Master in Lunacy, a new exhibition at the Hyde Park Barracks, is an interesting study of the history of mental health care including, asylums, inmates and treatments from the First Fleet to the present. Master in Lunacy, named after the government department located on the top floor of the Barracks from 1888 to 1951, is an interpretive display which explores the history of the Master in Lunacy's office. Michael Bogle and Samantha Fabry, Curators of the Hyde Park Barracks said that some of Sydney's most colourful characters like Henry Lawson, Bee Miles, J.F. Archibald, William Chidley and Miss M.D. all spent time inside mental asylums. "Eccentricity and lunacy, which were often labels for displays of unacceptable public behaviour could land these people in psychiatric detention," said Samantha Fabry. The early lunatic asylums - as they were called - were like gaols. As the last century progressed, treatments and asylums improved radically.

    Soooooooo….are we really a "weird mob". We Australian who live in that great land we and many others call THE GREAT LAND DOWNUNDER. In this page I have tried to list a little history combined with my favourites so hopefully from the links (I have copied some of the information here as well) you can gain an insight into what makes us tick An Overview http://www.australianaustralia.com/overview.html The Australian Flag History of the Flag On 1 January 1901 the six colonies (states) agreed to unite under the name of the "Commonwealth of Australia " the same date we became one Nation. Shortly prior to the opening of Parliament there was a worldwide competition for flags of the Official and Naval purposes and one for the Merchant Navy. Over 30,000 designs were submitted with five being selected of equal merit. On the day the winners were announced by the then Prime Minister Mr E Barton, a large flag embodying the designs of the winning entrants was flown from the exhibition buildings in Melbourne. In 1903 the Commonwealth Gazette announced that King Edward V11 had approved the design of the Flag for Australia In 1908, the Government decided that a seven-point star symbolic of the six States and the Territories should replace the original six-pointed star shown in the original design of the Flag. The other five stars are a representation of the Southern Cross star formation. For many years the Blue Ensign of the Commonwealth was regarded as an official flag with its' use being restricted to Government establishments. This restriction was later lifted by the then Prime Minister Sir Robert Menzies in 1941. The Flags Act 1953 proclaimed the Australian Blue Ensign as the National Flag.
