Lawson, John,
(London: W. Taylor and J. Baker, 1714) 258 p.; 20 cm. Presented by John Vaughan (copy owned by B. S. Barton)
Title page of Lawson's History of Carolina A native Londoner, John Lawson (d. 1711), sailed to South Carolina, in August, 1700, to assume an appointment as Surveyor-General of North Carolina. Although his origins remain obscure, he appears to have had a solid scientific education and was sufficiently elevated socially to append "gent." to his name, no meaningless appendage in the England of Queen Anne. The History of Carolina Section on Indians from
Lawson's History of Carolina
Lawson's History of Carolina , however, lived longer than Lawson himself. An account of his first sojourn in the Carolinas, the History covers a broad swath of territory in more than one sense, surveying the landscape, the possibilities for European settlement, and the native plants and animals, and placing a special emphasis upon the Indian inhabitants of the region. Balancing the desire to promote his colony with careful observation, and pitting overt credulity against observational rigor, Lawson's History at times presents some seemingly odd natural facts. Characteristically, he reported that rattlesnakes "have the power or art (I know not which to call it) to charm squirrels, hares, partridges, or any such thing, in such manner that they run directly into their mouths." His science, however, was perfectly adequate by contemporary standards, and ran directly into the mouths of his readership at home, enjoying three English and two German editions before 1722.

    Notes
: According to the research of Virginia Foxworth Lawson published in The Lawson Letters (#19, p. 165), a John Losson, with Vinyard Crawford and Goulder Fields as neighbors, were listed in the MS territorial census of 1816 as living in Monroe Co., MS Territory, from which Walker Co. was formed in 1823. That census was taken in the MS Territory as a prelude to the establishment of AL as a state. : I was able to find a Vanyard Crawford, Golder Fields, and a John Lawson in the 1820 census St. Clair Co., AL. It showed that in the Crawford household there was 1 male 5-10 years, 1 male 10-15 years, 1 male 15-20 years and 1 male 50-60 years, which I assume is Vanyard. There was 1 female 10-15 years and 1 female 40-50 years. In John Lawson's household there were 4 males 5-10 years, and 1 male 20-30 years, whom I assume to be John. There was also 1 female 0-5 years, 1 female 5-10 years and 1 20-30 years. Because of the age, I am not sure this is the same John Losson/Lawson that shows up in the 1840 and 1850 censuses with his sons Vinyard and Goulder living in Walker Co. : It had been thought that since the name "Vinyard" has been used in the family for many generations that it was a family name, maybe the maiden name of John's wife Sarah. However, it appears that it could be the name of a family friend"Vinyard Crawford." Excerpts from "Gone to Georgia" by William C. Stewart

Mamaw was also always busy and had us with bowls of green beans to snap and clean.Papaw built the home they lived in an addition was later added. Mamaws kitchen had an old pancake wood stove in the kitchen she cooked on mostly.Noon meal was the main meal, covered with towles and then left for later. The orginial house had three rooms. Kitchen, Bedroom w/ front door, and Living room with a small fire place. Later an addition of two bedrooms, bathroom connecting the addition.A front porch was added also with a porch swing that squeeked. Most everyone was outside all day. I remember playing in an apple tree. Climbing it and eating apples that tasted like pears. The tree was planted near a pear tree anfd the roots must have grown together. The pears had an apple taste and the apples had a pear taste. We were told no one else had a tree like this.

    55. Historic Bath - John Lawson
    — John Lawson — Explorer, Historian, and CoFounder of Bath. A WRITER ANDHISTORIAN A gentleman by birth, John Lawson was a well educated man.
    http://www.ah.dcr.state.nc.us/sections/hs/bath/lawson.htm
Explorer, Historian, and Co-Founder of Bath A dventurer John Lawson booked passage for the New World and sailed from Cowes, England on May 1, 1700. An acquaintance who had been to America assured Lawson " that Carolina was the best country I could go to ," and the young traveler was eager to see Britain's colony in the New World. After a harried ocean voyage lasting nearly three months, Lawson's ship put in at New York Harbor. In late August, following a brief stay in New York, Lawson sailed for the bustling colonial port of Charleston. By December, the young adventurer had been given a daunting task. The Lords Proprietors—wealthy Englishmen appointed by the Crown to govern the settlement of Carolina—assigned John Lawson to conduct a reconnaissance survey of the interior of the province. The Carolina backcountry at that time was an unknown and forbidding place. There were no adequate maps, and little was known about the Native American inhabitants of the region—including their attitude toward English settlers. THE LAWSON EXPEDITION
O n December 28, 1700, Lawson—with a party of five Englishmen and various Indian guides picked up along the way—set out on a brave journey through the wastes of Carolina. Following the Santee and Wateree Rivers through southern Carolina, Lawson's party met with members of several Native American tribes in the region, including the Santee, Congaree, Wateree, and Waxhaw Indians.

PTE. 26365 JOHN LAWSON HEYS of the East Lancashire Regiment was killed in action on the night of October 20th 1918 during the capture by his battalion of the village of Briastre, near Cambrai in northern France. John was aged twenty four and lived with his parents at 15 Hudson Street, Accrington. Before his enlistment in 1916 he worked with his father at Kearns Allan Turkey Red Dyeworks, Baxenden. He saw much service in France, and also suffered much. He was wounded in July 1917 and again in March 1918. He had returned to France from hospital in England only a month before he was killed. His death was instantaneous, and he died together with two comrades - his platoon officer and his platoon sergeant. John's company officer later wrote to his father that "John was one of the most cheerful and efficient soldiers in the company, and all the N.C.O.'s and men in his platoon will greatly feel his loss". John's body lies in Belle Vue Farm British Cemetery. It was begun by John's battalion on October 23rd after they captured the farm. In 1922 it was enlarged by forty seven graves from the surrounding area, and now contains 140 graves, even so, a relatively small cemetery for the area. The cemetery is bounded by the high wall of the farm, and the other three sides by brick walls. The whole is planted with flowering shrubs and thorn trees.
