Born 25th September 1894, John Howard Lawson would lead anything but a quiet life. After attending Williams College he would commence his career as a playwright, but with America's entry into World War I in 1917 that he would be exposed to experiences and people who would go on to affect the rest of his life. He would serve as a volunteer Red Cross ambulance driver, and see the worst things that war can do to man. His Red Cross duties would also bring him into contact with other writers, Ernest Hemingway, E.E. Cummings, and Dos Passos. The end result was that Howard would begin to embrace socialist ideas, and Marxism. With the end of the war he would remain in Europe, and move to Rome where he took up a job as a newspaper editor for a while FILMOGRAPHY t-tiles, w- writer Careless Years, The (w) Cry, the Beloved Country (w) Smash-Up, the Story of a Woman (w) Counter-Attack (w) Sahara (w)

TESTIMONY OF JOHN CHARLES MOFFITT Mr. STRIPLING. Did you ever join any organizations while you were in Hollywood in connection with being a writer for the motion-picture industry? After we had been in that organization some months we were invited to what turned out to be a more or less star chamber meeting, an inner corps meeting. It took place in the home of Mr. Frank Tuttle, a director. Mr. Herbert Biberman, who had been responsible for my being in the Anti-Nazi League, was there, as was his wife, Miss Gail Sondergaard, an actress. Donald Ogden Stewart was also one of those present. . . . Mr. STRIPLING. Would you give the committee an account of the activities that you observed as a member during those 6 weeks? Mr. STRIPLING. Would you identify Mr. Lawson? Mr. MOFFITT. Yes, sir. Mr. STRIPLING. He is a writer, is he not? Mr. MOFFITT. John Howard Lawson is a writer. He was the first president of the Screen Writers Guild. It has been testified before the Tenney committee of the California legislature that Mr. Lawson was sent to Los Angeles by the Communist Party for the purpose of organizing Communist activities in Hollywood. It was testified by a former secretary of the Communist Party for Los Angeles County. . . . Mr. STRIPLING. We will go back to your activities in the Anti-Nazi League.

Another wonderful playground in a fabulous location . This playground is especially great for toddlers , but it's playstructures offer lots of opportunity for creative play so there may be this kind of appeal for older kids. The playstructures don't offer challenging climbs, so it may not be of much interest to kids that crave the thrill of climbing high up. There are lots of benches around the various play areas for adults to sit, watch and socialize. For climbing and imaginative play , one section has a wonderful ship that is quite large. The bow of the ship is somewhat smaller than the stern and is designed for smaller kids. It has a rope net to climb up and a steering wheel looking out over the water. The stern of the ship has a ladder or a rope net to climb up a bit higher and another steering wheel, also facing the water. There is a wide slide down from this upper level. There is also a ground level under the stern section that has seats for passengers as well as another steering wheel.

To the Shore, Harbours and Castle
A short distance along Lawson Place a new development called Lawson Court opens on the right. In 1893, John walked along the High Street and he saw a shop sign 'Andrew Melville, Plumber'. On entering the close and workshop he found that Mr. Melville was an old school friend. The Melvilles' plumbing and ironmongery businesses were at their peak in 1893. They may be regarded as typical of the industrious merchants of Dunbar (John would surely have been in their number, if his family had not emigrated). They owned two adjacent tenements, which now form the northern part of Lawson Court. Together with the southern edge, once Innes Close, the area has been redeveloped to provide housing and a number of small workshops. In essence, the land has been restored to its proper function. This kind of development would surely have found favour with John. Wall at the rear
of John Muir House A short way along is the very high wall of John's boyhood garden. It would give any-one today a hard climb, but it is little different from when John and brother David used to scramble over to freedom and adventure. This is the end of the main town walk. But John ranged further afield, especially to the beaches and rock-pools of the coast.

Looking back towards
Lawson Place Handily, Peter Lawson, Dunbar's apothecary with plentiful supplies of castor oil, lived on the other side of the West Port, at the entrance to what is now Lawson Place. '...This famous Peter loved flowers and had a fine garden surrounded by an iron fence, through the bars of which, when I thought no one saw me, I oftentimes snatched a flower and took to my heels. One day Peter ... caught me. I screamed ...(but he)... dragged me along to the stable where he kept ...(a)... wild pony, pushed me in right back of its heels, and shut the door ... I did not steal any more of his flowers. He was a good hard judge of boy nature...' The garden and stable may have been immediately behind the houses on the left of the lane (where the gravel car-park is now).

The Hieronymus Bosch of Beads
Page X After the last parade rolls down St. Charles Avenue on Fat Tuesday, and before the sanitation crews and mechanized street sweepers begin the massive job of clearing the detritus of the festivities, New Orleans artist John Lawson swings into action—scrounging the street and neutral ground, as the grassy medians that divide the city’s avenues are known, for beads and trinkets. In video footage shot by his girlfriend, Elizabeth Morgan, the night of Fat Tuesday 1999, he could almost be mistaken for one of the Orleans Parish prison inmates who volunteer for Mardi Gras cleanup duty. He's dressed drably in heavy clothes, with a wool cap pulled down over his face and double-lined Hefty garbage bags tucked into his belt. Commenting on the video, Lawson says he likes to remain "as inconspicuous as possible."

Lawson to lead APTS
Will fight for DTV aid, battle block grants Originally published in Current, March 26, 2001
By Stephanie Lash Before America's Public Television Stations hired him as its new president last week, John Lawson was already doing his new job: working to convince Congress of the educational merits of digital TV and the demerits of state block grants, which would undo national projects like Ready to Learn.
Lawson's new bosses lauded his "bullish commitment" to the promise of DTV. Those have been major themes in his work since 1993 as a lobbyist for pubcasting and educational groups that are clients of his firm, Convergence Services. Before that, he handled similar issues in his 1990-93 stint as director of national affairs at APTS. On April 1, Lawson will start work as president of APTS, succeeding David Brugger, who left the association last December after 13 years in the job. One of Lawson's objectives will be to entice Congress to allocate funds for pubcasting's digital transition by using a strategy recently devised by APTS' Legislative Advisory Group: in return for funding and must-carry provisions, pubcasting stations will allocate one of their multicast channels to formal educational programming. It's a new selling point for a client Lawson knows well. In his earlier work with APTS he lobbied Congress on CPB, education, telecommunications, Head Start and rural development legislation. He also has station experience, having served three years as director of public information for South Carolina Educational Television. Lawson worked in the campaigns and administration of South Carolina Gov. Richard Riley, who later served as Secretary of Education in the Clinton Administration. In the mid-1980s, he worked on nuclear waste policy as executive director of an environmental group, the Energy Research Foundation.
