Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
a mighty woman with a torch
whose flame is imprisoned lightning,
and her name Mother of Exiles.
From her beacon-hand glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command the air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame. "Keep ancient lands your storied pomp!" cries she with silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

Emma Lazarus was born to Moses and Esther Nathan Lazarus in New York Cityon July 22, 1849. Emma grew up in a prominent fourth generation
    http://www.soros.org/emma/html/emma_.html
E mma Lazarus was born to Moses and Esther Nathan Lazarus in New York City on July 22, 1849. Emma grew up in a prominent fourth generation Jewish family, one of the oldest in New York City. She was well educated and by age 25 was a published poet and author. The world around Emma was changing quickly. B y the time Emma turned twenty, the population of New York Cityhad more than doubled, to over a million people. These people came from all corners of the world. Emma, though wealthy, grew up amongst those people in downtown Manhattan. She had no choice but absorb those influences. B I n 1883, Emma Lazarus published her famous poem, ``The New Colossus" for an auction at the Art Loan Fund Exhibition in Aid of the Bartholdi Pedestal Fund for the Statue of Liberty. The statue was a gift from France called, "Liberty Enlightening the World," honoring two nations who achieved independence through revolution. Later, the poem fell away into obscurity while the nation waited for its Lady Liberty. I n 1886 the Statue was erected in New York Harbor where President Grover Cleveland said of Liberty, that her light would, "pierce the darkness of man's ignorance and oppression." Emma Lazarus would not live to understand the full impact of what she had written. She died in 1887 after visiting France. It was not until 1901, that ``The New Colossus" was added to a bronze plaque at the base of the statue. It was then that Liberty took on her more well know purpose. Baring Emma's words, she was born the ``Mother of Exiles," calling out across the seas, the most famous immigrant herself, welcoming those from foreign lands to America, a land of freedom and hope.
