Nejúspìšnìjší sbírka povídek tohoto autora In a Glass Darkly (1872) vyšla v èeštinì pod názvem Zelený dìs.

Although Le Fanu was one of the most popular writers of the Victorian era, he is not so widely read anymore. Le Fanu's best-known works include Uncle Silas (1864), a suspense story, and The House by the Churchyard (1863), a murder mystery. His vampire story 'Carmilla,' which influenced Bram Stoker's Dracula , has been filmed several times. "Pen, ink, and paper are cold vehicles for the marvelous, and a "reader" decidedly a more critical animal than a "listener." (from 'An Account of Some Strange Disturbances in Aungier Street', 1853) Joseph Thomas Sheridan Le Fanu was born in Dublin into a wealthy family of Huguenot origins. His father, Thomas Philip Le Fanu, was a clergyman. Le Fanu started to write poems in his childhood. In 1833 he entered Trinity College, where he read law and graduated in 1837. His first story, 'The Ghost and the Bonesetter', appeared in the Dublin University Magazine in 1838. It also published many of his other stories in the following years, which were later collected in

Sheridan le Fanu biography
Joseph Thomas Sheridan Le Fanu (1814 - 1873) was an Irish writer of ghost stories, mystery novels and a celebrated vampire story. It is difficult to say why he is not as popular as Bram Stoker nor why his vampire novella, 'Carmilla', is not as well known as 'Dracula'. He is not particularly fashionable nowadays, while Bram Stoker's story is still rehashed and used as inspiration for many other writers in every possible genre. Le Fanu was related to the playwright Richard Brinsley Sheridan, hence his name. His family was an old Irish Huguenot one, literary and well-educated. He was educated at Trinity College, Dublin, and was called to the bar but did not practice law, setting himself up in journalism the following year by buying the 'Warden' and the 'Protestant Guardian' and editing them, and acquiring a one-third share of three other newspapers. bodyOffer(23855) His first fictional work was written while he was still a student. 'The Purcell Papers' were eventually collected in three volumes in 1880, long after he had established himself as a writer of the supernatural. He published 14 novels between 1845 and 1873, including 'Uncle Silas' which is still read today. He was also a prolific short story writer. His position with regard to publishing these stories was made much easier by virtue of the fact that he owned and edited the 'Dublin University Magazine' between 1861and 1869, and published many of his stories in it. In fact his first published story, 'The Ghost and the Bonesetter', was published in 1838 (the year he finished his university education) in this magazine, though he obviously did not own it as this point. The same magazine also published 'The Purcell Papers' over a period of time from 1838 - 1840. He also owned the 'Dublin Evening Mail', and other newspapers, and had a long and successful journalistic career as well.

Pubblica alcuni racconti sul "Dublin University Magazine" ( The Ghost and the Bone-setter, The Firtunes of Sir Robert Ardagh e Schalken the Painter ).
Usciranno postumi The Purcell Papers e Madam Crowl's Ghost and Other Tales of Mistery che raccolgono racconti pubblicati solo su rivista.

(Dublin 28 August 1814 - Dublin 7 February 1873) LIFE: He spends his youth in Chapelizod, at the periphery of Dublin, and Abington, in county Limerick, living in close contact with a rural society poor but proud and imbued with superstitions. In 1832 he begins to study at Trinity College where he takes degree in Jurisprudence. He publishes some tales on the "Dublin University Magazine" ( The Ghost and the Bone-setter The Fortunes of Sir Robert Ardagh and Schalken the Painter ). He writes two historical novels set in England inspired by Walter Scott and the short collection Ghost Stories and Tales of Mistery, 1851 . In 1844 marries Susan Bennett who will die 14 years after driving Le Fanu to lose every interest in social life until being defined "The Invisible Prince". Shortly before his death he publishes the tales collections Chronicles of Golden Friars, 1871 and In a Glass Darkly, 1872
The Purcell Papers
and Madam Crowl's Ghost and Other Tales of Mistery that collect tales published only on magazines, are published posthumous.
Le Fanu gained his reputation especially for tales (his historical novels never had large fortune), in which he is inspired by the numerous local traditions, that stir ancient pagan reminiscences with Christian venerations; He narrates of restless phantoms in solitary castles, of fairies, gnomes and leprechauns who live in forests and kidnap children; of bewitches animals and fantastic creatures who lay traps in woods.

JOSEPH SHERIDAN LE FANU
(1814 - 1873) novelist and journalist
Born 28 th Aug 1814, 45 Dominick Street, Dublin Educated by his father, a clergyman, and at TCD. While an undergraduate he became a contributor to Dublin University Magazine and about 1837 wrote two stirring ballads, ‘Paudrig Crohoore’ and ‘Shamus O’Brien’, which won wide popularity. Called to the bar 1839 but soon abandoned law to devote himself to journalism. He bought three Dublin newspapers, the Warder,Evening Packet, and Dublin Evening Mail, and amalgamated them as the Evening Mail; it flourished for over a hundred years. Formerly witty and gregarious, he withdrew from society following the death of his wife in 1858 and took to writing the novels by which he is remembered. The House by the Churchyard (1863) and Uncle Silas (1864) made his reputation as a master of the mysterious and the uncanny. In a Glass Darkly (1872), a collection of his stories, includes ‘The Watcher’, the most spine-chilling. From 1869 to 1872 he was proprietor and editor of Dublin University Magazine.
