Robert Edward Lee
"With all my devotion to the Union and the feeling of loyalty and duty of an American citizen, I have not been able to make up my mind to raise my hand against my relatives, my children, my home. I have therefore resigned my commission in the Army, and save in defense of my native State, with the sincere hope that my poor services may never be needed, I hope I may never be called on to draw my sword....." Lee in a letter to his sister, April 20, 1861 The idol of the South to this day, Virginian Robert E. Lee had some difficulty in adjusting to the new form of warfare that unfolded with the Civil war, but this did not prevent him from keeping the Union armies in Virginia at bay for almost three years. The son of Revolutionary War hero "Light Horse" Harry Lee-who fell into disrepute in his later years attended West Point and graduated second in his class. During his four years at the military academy he did not earn a single demerit and served as the cadet corps' adjutant. Upon his 1829 graduation he was posted to the engineers. Before the Mexican War he served on engineering projects in Georgia, Virginia, and New York. During the war he served on the staffs of John Wool and Winfield Scott. Particularly distinguishing himself scouting for and guiding troops, he won three brevets and was slightly wounded at Chapultepec.
Following a stint in Baltimore Harbor he became superintendent of the military academy in 1852. When the mounted arm was expanded in 1855, Lee accepted the lieutenant colonelcy of the 2nd Cavalry in order to escape from the painfully slow promotion in the engineers. Ordered to western Texas, he served with his regiment until the 1857 death of his father-in-law forced him to ask for a series of leaves to settle the estate.

Robert Edward Lee, army officer and commander of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia during the Civil War , spent several crucial years of his career in Texas. Lee was born on January 19, 1807, at Stratford Hall, Westmoreland County, Virginia, the son of Gen. Henry and Ann (Carter) Lee. He graduated second in his class at the United States Military Academy in 1829. On June 30, 1831, while stationed at Fort Monroe he married Mary Custis of Arlington, Virginia; they became the parents of seven children. Lee was quite devoted to his family, and as often as military duty would permit, he spent much time at home. He had a wide variety of assignments-working in the chief engineer's office, Washington, D.C., 1834-37; supervising construction on the St. Louis harbor, 1837; and serving with his regiment at Fort Hamilton, New York, 1841-46, with Gen. John E. Wool's army from San Antonio to Buena Vista, 1846-47, and with Gen. Winfield Scott's army from Vera Cruz to Mexico City, 1847. As Scott's chief of staff during the Mexican War , Lee won three brevets- major, lieutenant colonel, and colonel - all because of conspicuous gallantry in the field. After the Mexican War Lee directed the building of Fort Carroll, near Baltimore, Maryland. From September 1, 1852, until March 31, 1855, he was superintendent of the United States Military Academy. On March 3, 1855, Congress had authorized two new regiments of infantry and two of cavalry to help protect the 8,000mile western frontier. Against 11,000 troops were 30,000 Indians in widely dispersed raiding bands. Texas had a frontier of more than 1,200 miles, with only 2,886 United States officers and enlisted men to defend it. Lee was with

The strong, healthy boy born to "Light Horse Harry" and Ann Carter Lee on January 19, 1807 was the last Lee born at Stratford to survive to maturity. Though he spent fewer than four years there, his later boyhood visits left an impression that he carried throughout his life. As sometimes happens in distinguished families, one member seems to fall heir to the best qualities of the previous generations and none of the flaws. So it was with Robert Edward Lee. From both the Carters and the Lees he inherited a handsome countenance. From his father came rare physical strength and endurance. The sense of duty that Harry had learned from George Washington was vividly imparted to his son Robert. Even "Light Horse Harry's" difficulties with money seemed to have produced positive responses in Robert, who throughout his life was meticulous and prudent in all finacial matters. Ann Carter Lee's gentleness was inherited by Robert, and his loving care of his ailing mother was the mainstay of her life. With his father and elder brothers away, and his mother and sisters in failing health, Robert had become, by age 12, head of the household. On cold afternoons, when his mother was well enough, young Robert would stuff paper in the cracks of the carriage to block the wind and take her driving. Years later, when he left for West Point, Ann Lee wrote to a cousin, "How I will get on without Robert? He is both a son and daughter to me." Robert Lee's choice of a military career was dictated by financial necessity. There was no money left to send him to Harvard, where his older brother Charles Carter studied. Such circumstances led him to an appointment to West Point Military Academy. Robert, who led the Cadet Corps in 1829, graduated second in his class. In four years he received not a single demerit, and he became one of the most popular cadets in his class. When he returned as the Academy's superintendent years later, he won the same affectionate respect from the cadets for his compassion, sense of fairness and strong moral leadership.

THE GREAT HOUSE
Thomas Lee (1690-1750), a prominent Virginia planter, built Stratford in the late 1730s. Using brick made on the site and timber cut from virgin forest, builders and craftsmen constructed the H-shaped manor house, its four outbuildings, and coach house and stables. The Great Hall in the center of the house, with an inverted tray ceiling above fully paneled walls, is one of the most architecturally significant rooms to survive from colonial America.
Stratford was the home of Thomas Lee's eight children: his sons Richard Henry Lee and Francis Lightfoot Lee were the only brothers to sign the Declaration of Independence. Their cousin, "Light Horse Harry" Lee , the dashing Revolutionary calvary leader and friend of George Washington, made Stratford his home for over twenty years. Robert Edward Lee (1807-1870) is the most prominent of the distinguished members of the Lee family born in the big sunlit bedroom on Stratford's upper floor. Destined to become the General in Chief of the Confederate Armies, young Robert slept in the graceful crib still in its place.

Robert Edward Lee was born at Stratford in Westmoreland County, Virginia, on January 19,1807. He was one of five children. His parents were Ann Hill Carter and Henry (Light - Horse Harry") Lee. Lee married Mary Custis the granddaughter of George and Martha Washington, and later in his life he lived for a period of time in the Custis house located in Arlington, Virginia. In fact the Custis house is located at the top of the hill above the graves of John and Robert Kennedy at Arlington National Cemetery. This house was the family home of Mary Custis Lee through her father George Washington Cuistis. During the War Between The States, the Custis plantation was taken over by Federal troops and turned into a National Cemetery.

It is my plan to include both Union as well as Confederate personalities, but to date I have visited mostly Confederate graves. This is due to the fact that I am from the South (the Confederate graves are closer), and my side of the Buford family fought for the South. But we had other Bufords who wore blue, and I hope to include some Union sites in the future.
If you should know of a site that is not listed, feel free to leave me a note as to the person and the location. Perhaps I can include it at some future date.

General Robert E. Lee
Robert Edward Lee (1807-1870), Confederate Commander-In-Chief from Virginia. One of history's most distinguished generals. He graduated second in his class at West Point. In 1859 he was called upon to lead a group to put an end to John Brown's Harpers Ferry Raid. The end of the Confederacy came when Lee was unable to destroy the Army of the Potomac at Gettysburg and was forced to retreat into Virginia. After the war he served as President of Washington College (now Washington and Lee University) in Lexington, Virginia until his death on October 22, 1870.
