LEE HOME The Early Years The Civil War Last Years Lee, Robert Edward (1807-1870), was a great general who commanded the Confederate Army in the Civil War. He is one of the most beloved figures in American history. Lee's fame rests on his military achievements as Confederate commander in the face of overwhelming odds, and on his outstanding personal character. He won the admiration and respect of Northerners as well as Southerners. Lee fought for one section of the young nation, but the struggle did not make him intolerant. He fought, not for personal gain, but to prove himself worthy of a cause. Union General Ulysses S. Grant, to whom Lee was finally forced to surrender, said about Lee: "There was not a man in the Confederacy whose influence with the whole people was as great as his." Unlike President Abraham Lincoln, who led the North in the Civil War, Lee was not a self-made man. Lee's family was the leading family of Virginia, and one of the most distinguished in the United States. A kinsman, Thomas Lee, had served as royal governor of the colony. Lee was also related to Francis Lightfoot Lee and Richard Henry Lee, who had been statesmen and soldiers in Revolutionary War days. His father, Henry Lee, known as "Light-Horse Harry," was a brilliant cavalry commander in the Revolutionary War. When the Lee mansion, Matholic, burned in the early 1700's, Queen Caroline of England gave Thomas Lee money to help rebuild it. Lee called the new building Stratford Hall.

Lee Steel Engraving LEE, Robert Edward soldier, born in Stratford, Westmoreland County, Virginia, 19 Jan., 1807; died in Lexington, Virginia, 12 Oct., 1870. He was the son of the Revolutionary general Henry Lee (q. v.), known as " Light-Horse Harry," was graduated from the U. S. military academy at West Point in 1829, ranking second in a class of forty-six, and was commissioned as a 2d lieutenant in the engineers. At the beginning of the Mexican war he was assigned to duty as chief engineer of the army under General Wool, his rank being that of captain. His abilities as an engineer, and his conduct as a soldier, won the special admiration of General Scott, who attributed the fall of Vera Cruz to his skill, and repeatedly singled him out for commendation. Lee was thrice brevetted during the war, his last brevet to the rank of colonel being for services at the storming of Chapultepec. In 1852 he was assigned to the command of the military academy at West Point, where he remained for about three years. He wrought great improvements in the academy, notably enlarging its course of study and bringing it to a rank equal to that of the best European military schools. In 1855 he was appointed lieutenant-colonel of the 2d regiment of cavalry, and assigned to duty on the Texan frontier, where he remained until near the beginning of the civil war, with the exception of an interval when, in 1859, he was ordered to Washington and placed in command of the force that was sent against John Brown at Harper's Ferry.

Robert Edward Lee (1807-1870) at the time of the Battle of Gettysburg, had been in command of the Army of Northern Virginia for almost a year. Lieutenant Colonel Arthur James Lyon Freemantle of His Majesty's Coldstrem Guards describes Lee best in his classic book on the American Civil War, Three Months in the Southern States Lee was born in Stratford, Virginia, and was educated at the United States Military Academy. He graduated from West Point in 1829. He was a military engineer. He earned three brevets while in General Winfield Scott's staff in Mexico. He spent time as the superintendent of West Point, Lt. Colonel of the 2nd Cavalry Regiment and Colonel of the 1st Cavalry Regiment. When war between the states seemed imminent, President Abraham Lincoln offered Lee command of the Union forces, but Lee declined. In 1861 he resigned from the U.S. Army when Virginia seceded from the Union. For a year he was military adviser to Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederate States of America, and was then placed in command of the Army in northern Virginia. His wife's ancestral home was in Arlington Virginia, a plantation that after the war the winning side would take away from the family and make it the Arlington National Cemetary.

Lee THE CIVIL WAR JOURNAL OF ANDREW JACKSON NICKELL Civil War Ancestors JOHN OGAN (1836-1915) - My maternal great-great-grandfather, John Ogan, was from McArthur in Vinton County, Ohio. John was the third generation of his Ogan family living in southern Ohio after moving from Virginia. On November 8, 1861, John Ogan enlisted in the 56th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Company F at McArthur. Like Andrew Jackson Nickell, John Ogan was an active combatant in the Vicksburg Campaign. John was shot through the shoulder at the Battle of Champion Hills on May 16, 1863 as the Union Army pressed westward from Jackson to Vicksburg, Mississippi. John Ogan survived his wounds, and was mustered out with his regiment at New Orleans on November 14, 1864. He returned to Vinton County to start the highly successful McArthur Brickyard. The Ogans had been making bricks for generations. John also made and played his own violins. He enjoyed a long and prosperous life in McArthur, and had nine children with his three wives. He passed away in 1915 at the age of seventy-nine. EDWARD CULVER (1832-1892) - My loving wife's great-grandfather was a successful farmer and stock-raiser from Athens in Menard County, Illinois. Edward first came to Illinois from Vermont with his parents in the mid-1830's.
