The Analects Attributed to Confucius [Kongfuzi], 551-479 BCE by Lao-Tse [Lao Zi] Translated by James Legge (1815-1897)
Chapter 1 The Master "Is it not pleasant to learn with a constant perseverance and application?" "Is it not delightful to have friends coming from distant quarters? "Is he not a man of complete virtue, who feels no discomposure though men may take no note of him?" The philosopher Yu said, "They are few who, being filial and fraternal, are fond of offending against their superiors. There have been none, who, not liking to offend against their superiors, have been fond of stirring up confusion." "The superior man bends his attention to what is radical. That being established, all practical courses naturally grow up. Filial piety and fraternal submission,-are they not the root of all benevolent actions?" The Master said, "Fine words and an insinuating appearance are seldom associated with true virtue."

    Emigrants To Oregon In 1851
compiled by Stephenie Flora Last Updated 10-25-02 Commentary on the year 1851 and list of arrivals for that year still to come. In the meantime, if you have an 1851 family and want to be put online as a researcher for that family submit your information to my email address at the bottom of this page. Albert Belanger, who can be reached at skipb@rcn.com has started a project which will include documenting the various individuals on the trail in 1851 and their arrival dates at the various well-known landmarks. This is being done in an attempt to reconstruct the various parties traveling in 1851. Anyone having any type of documentation on their ancestors' overland experiences is encouraged to touch bases with Albert. As of June 6, there had passed Fort Kearny (as reported) 837 emigrant wagons, 2883 individuals (1156 men, 928 women, 799 children), 5975 oxen, cows, horse and mules. According to records kept by John Boulware, ferryman at Table Creek (Old Fort Kearny), 220 wagons had crossed at that point by late May. The remainder apparently crossing at other points below. Groups To Oregon in 1851 *1: P.V. Crawford group from Indiana included 74 persons; arrived in St. Joseph on April 9, moved a mile east of town to organize; crossed the MO April 25, traveled six miles and camped until April 27 when they began their journey to Oregon.

    LEGGE, JAMES
LEGENDRE, L.—LEGGE, H. Geodesy.—Besides the work upon the geodetical operations connecting Paris and Greenwich, of which Legendre was one of the authors, he published in the Memoires de I'Academie for 1787 two papers on trigonometrical operations depending upon the figure of the earth, containing many theorems relating to this subject. The best known of these, which is called Legendre's theorem, is usually given in treatises on spherical trigonometry; by means of it a small spherical triangle may be treated as a plane triangle, certain corrections being applied to the angles. Legendre was also the author of a memoir upon triangles drawn upon a spheroid. Legendre's theorem is a fundamental one in geodesy, and his contributions to the subject are of the greatest importance. It will thus be seen that Legendre's works have placed him in the very foremost rank in the widely distinct subjects of elliptic functions, theory of numbers, attractions, and geodesy, and have given him a conspicuous position in connexion with the integral calculus and other branches of mathematics. He published a memoir on the integration of partial differential equations and a few others which have not been noticed above, but they relate to subjects with which his name is not especially associated. A good account of the principal works of Legendre is given in the Bibliotheque universelle de Geneve for 1833, pp. 45-82. See Elie de Beaumont, " Memoir de Legendre," translated by C. A. Alexander, Smithsonian Report (1874). (J. W. L. G.)

Table of Contents of the Sacred Books of the East Index of Translators of the Sacred Books of the East Transcription Conventions Available SBE reprints This series was the one of the inspirations for the sacred-texts website. As most of the SBE texts are in the public domain , we have a long term project of converting the entire series to etexts. This page is a progress report on this project, and a way of centralizing known bibliographic information on the SBE. A few of the texts in this series were already available on the Internet, albeit without any bibliographic information, footnotes or introductions. Others have been scanned at sacred-texts for the first time, notably the Upanishads. At this point, just over half of these volumes have been converted into electronic versions; twenty of these have been done at sacred-texts.com. The difficulties of turning these books into etexts are enormous, and requires great care and diligence. The typography is, in a word, substandard; not to diminish the fact that it must have been a substantial accomplishment for its time. The system of transcription of non-western alphabets uses specialized italics and diacritics. The result is that every one of the SBE volumes gives optical character recognition (OCR) software the fits. It is not unusual to have to spend up to 100 hours proofing each volume. One volume (

    Chapter 6
ON THE NATURE OF THE UNIVERSE
The Tao that can be trodden is not the enduring and unchanging Tao. The name that can be named is not the enduring and unchanging name. I do not know whose son it (Tao) is. It might appear to have been before God. There was something undefined and complete, coming into existence before Heaven and Earth. How still it was and formless, standing alone, and undergoing no change, reaching everywhere and in no danger (of being exhausted)! It may be regarded as the Mother of all things. (2) I do not know its name, and I give it the designation of the Tao (the Way or Course). Making an effort (further) to give it a name I call it The Great. (3) Great, it passes on (in constant flow). Passing on, it becomes remote. Having become remote, it returns. Therefore the Tao is great; Heaven is great; Earth is great; and the (sage) king is also great. In the universe there are four that are great, and the (sage) king is one of them. (4) Man takes his law from the Earth; the Earth takes its law from Heaven; Heaven takes its law from the Tao. The law of the Tao is its being what it is.
