Translate this page Correva l'anno 1899 quando l'editore inglese David Mutt pubblicò Aradia - Gospelof the Witches, dell'americano Charles Godfrey Leland (1824-1903).

Okkultismi Englannissa
Menneisyyden romantisointi, pyrkimys rakentaa spiritualiteetille tieteellinen viitekehys ja kiinnostus uskontojen tutkimukseen olivat eräitä tekijöitä, jotka vaikuttivat järjestön nimeltä The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn (HOGD) syntyyn (Luhrmann 1989, 38-40).

View images from the collection Joseph Pennell (1857-1926) launched his career as an illustrator by selling picturesque drawings of south Philadelphia to Scribner's Monthly in 1881. Following the success of his sketches in New Orleans, published in George W. Cable's book The Creoles of Louisiana (1884), he married Elizabeth Robins (1855-1936), formerly his collaborator on a Century magazine article. The couple moved to London and became friends with the American artist James McNeill Whistler. Pennell, a prolific artist and writer, experimented with new graphic techniques and sought to draw critical attention to book illustration. His wife, a well-known columnist and biographer, frequently collaborated with the artist on travel writings. The couple returned to the United States in 1917, and Pennell taught for several years at the Art Students' League in New York City. Through the Pennells' bequest, the Library acquired their collection of books, manuscripts and graphic art, some of which had been deposited as early as the 1910s. In addition, the Library was provided with a special fund for the acquisition of modern prints. The Prints and Photographs Division has copies of virtually all of Pennell's published graphic works, approximately 1,885 prints. Included are his famous series on Philadelphia and the Panama Canal as well as "War Work in America," "War Work in England," and numerous depictions of industrial and urban scenes in Europe and America. The prints are listed in the fine prints card catalog and in

Aradia, or the Gospel of the Witches, by Charles Leland.
A New Translation by Mario Pazzaglini, Ph.D. and Dina Pazzaglini. Reviewed by Ken Butler This edition of /Aradia/ was my first true exposure to Leland's book. I
had known about it for years, and had read the various entries in
different encyclopedias, but when I finally broke down and bought a
copy, this edition was the only edition on the shelves of the San Jose
(Metaphysical) Bookshop. I lucked out that day. Here's why. First, Leland's /Aradia/, like Margaret Murray's /Witch-Cult/ and /The
God of the Witches/, were three of the earliest and most influential books to shape the neopagan witchcraft revival of the mid-twentieth century, but, like all old gods of the first generation, fell out of favor and influence, and into Tartarus, as it were, perhaps for being too dark, "too strong meat" as Clifton quotes Doreen Valiente, and for saying things that no one wants to hear just now. Now, I'll confess, that few things pique my interest as much as works that have fallen out of favor. I may draw similar conclusions, but I always want too see for

Modern Witchcraft, Origins and History based on course outline by Judith Brownlee Witchcraft, Wicca and Paganism are now prevalent across the world in a variety of flavors and aspects. First and foremost we need to define what we are talking about. Spirituality and religion are systems whereby we assign meaning to our world. There is an old saying that Science explains how and religion explains why. Throughout time there have been individuals who seem somehow better suited to interpret occurrences and phenomenon as signs and portents. These creative and mysterious creatures were very important in a world that was essentially unexplainable and hostile to its inhabitants. Disease, injury, natural disasters - even weather - could dramatically threaten the existence of entire regions and tribes. Life-spans were short, children were precious and the individual was largely viewed as only a cog of the tribal or group mechanism by which humankind would continue to exist. From this vantage, we romanticize the earliest eras as natural and serene mystical interactions between nature and humankind. We do not see the hardship, or experience the lack of stimuli that came from such a day-to-day, hand-to-mouth existence. We also cannot see the richness of personal interactions such isolation and concentration on survival as a goal might have brought. In short, we can only speculate on what life was and how it was experienced by our earliest ancestors. However, we can tell from what little evidence remains, that they were very aware of their environment and its interaction and effect on their lives. We are striving to bring that awareness and interaction into our modern lives. We seek to weave, once again, the natural rhythms of our world into our busy, complex days, and we reach to find meaning and power in the knowledge that simpler rhythm provides..

Complete text of the Emancipation Proclamation, signed by Abraham Lincoln as President, William Seward as Secretary of State, and John Nicolay, Private Secretary to the President. The Emancipation Proclamation is a cornerstone document in the history of the United States. It played a critical role in the victory of the Union, the reunification of the nation, and the final abolition of slavery. “All persons held as slaves within any state or designated part of a state, the people whereof shall be in rebellion against the United States, shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free…”Lincoln signed copies in June of 1864 to be sold in support of the Sanitary Commission, which raised money for sick and wounded Civil War soldiers, and improved conditions in military camps.

Perfect signature, full margins, minor matte burn from prior framing, very minor mended tears in the margins. Overall, one of the finest copies in existence. The Emancipation Proclamation was the single most important act of Lincoln’s presidency. The preliminary proclamation, announced on September 22, 1862, warned Southern states that if they did not abandon the war they would lose their slaves. As the final version took full effect on January 1, 1863, slavery in the United States at last approached its demise, allowing the nation to take the crucial first steps in granting citizenship to African Americans.
