Tolstoy and Dostoevsky Fall, 2001 Tulane University This is Tolstoy on his deathbed, Astapovo railway station, 7 November 1910 (old style). The first note quotes him as saying: "I advise you to do one thing — remember that there are lots of people in the world besides Lev Tolstoy, but you still keep looking only at this one man Lev Tolstoy." The text continues under the photograph: If we believe that everything that has happened to us in our lives has happened for our good, then what happens in our death is for our good. All misfortunes open up to us the divine, the immortal, the self-sufficient in us which makes up the basis of our life. Death, on the other hand, opens up to us our true ego What happens to us after death we cannot and should not know. We would not be able to live and do the work of God if we knew. If it should be something worse that awaited us, we would treasure this life all the more, and there is no greater impediment to the work of God than concern for this life. If it should be something better that awaited us, we would neglect this life and attempt to escape it. We do not know what awaits us, but we do know one thing without doubt: the spiritual

Program Notes
Suite from Masquerade by Aram Khachaturian

(Born June 6, 1903, in Tiflis, Georgia, USSR; died May 1, 1978, in Moscow)
Aram Khachaturian came from a modest background: his father was a poor Armenian bookbinder in the city of Tiflis in Georgia. The folk music of his native Caucasus had an important place in his home from the time he was a child. His family enrolled him at the Tiflis Commercial Institute, where he learned to play a tenor horn in the school band, and soon he taught himself to play the piano. In 1922, when he was nineteen years old, he journeyed to Moscow to study biology at the University. In Moscow he soon began to take cello lessons, followed by lessons in composition. In 1929 he became a full-time student at the Moscow Conservatory, from which he graduated with highest honors at the age of thirty-two.
When Khachaturian's Suite was performed in concert for the first time, it quickly became clear that this brilliantly theatrical music could take on a life of its own without reference to the drama. Its movements are a lilting Waltz, a dream-like Nocturne with solo violin, a dancing Mazurka, a melancholy Romance and a spirited Galop.
The score calls for piccolo and two flutes, two oboes, two clarinets, two bassoons, four horns, two trumpets, three trombones, tuba, timpani, percussion and strings.

Contos

LERMA, FRANCISCO DE SANDOVAL Y ROJAS, DUKE OF
baptistery of St John (11th century), built on the foundations of a Roman building, is surrounded by walls and numerous remains of the period, partly uncovered by excavations. The church of St Lawrence (I 4th century) contains the tomb and statue of Bertrand du Guesclin, whose ashes were afterwards carried to St Denis. Le Puy is the seat of a bishopric, a prefect and a court of assizes, and has tribunals of first instance and of commerce, a board of trade arbitration, a chamber of commerce, and a branch of the Bank of France. Its educational institutions include ecclesiastical seminaries, lycCes and training colleges for both sexes and municipal industrial schools of drawing, architecture and mathematics applied to arts and industries. The principal manufacture is that of lace and guipure (in woollen, linen, cotton, silk and gold and silver threads), and distilling, leather-dressing, malting and the manufacture of chocolate and cloth are carried on. Cattle, woollens, grain and vegetables are the chief articles of trade. LERDO DE TEJADA, SEBASTIAN (1825—1889), president of Mexico, was born at Jalapa on the 25th of April 1825. He was educated as a lawyer and became a member of the supreme court. He became known as a liberal leader and a supporter of President Juarex. He was minister of foreign affairs for three months in 1857, and became president of the Chamber of Deputies in 1861. During the French intervention and the reign of the emperor Maximilian he continued loyal to the patriotic party, and had an active share in conducting the national resistance. He was minister of foreign affairs to President Juarez, and he showed an implacable resolution in carrying out the execution of Maximilian at Querétaro. When Juarez died in 1872 Lerdo succeeded him in office in the midst
