Gaston Leroux Gaston Leroux was born in Paris, France. After leaving school, he studied law. In 1890, he became a court reporter for L'Echo de Paris . His reports on famous trials enhanced his reputation. It was not long before Le Matin , one of the most important French newspapers made him one of their leading journalists. In his late thirties, he decided to become a novelist. His novels were originally written as serials for daily newspapers or magazines. Leroux is best known for his novel 'Le Fantome de l'Opera'. Not all his novels are translated into English. The Phantom of the Opera), and Balaoo Cheri-Bibi is the nickname of a young butcher's apprentice gifted with extraordinary strength. In the first novel, Cheri-Bibi is framed for the murder of the Marquis du Touchais whose son, Maxime , then marries Cheri-Bibi's girl-friend, the beautiful Cecily , who is also Cheri-Bibi's boss' daughter. The hapless hero is sent to Devil's Island. With the help of fellow convict La Ficelle , Cheri-Bibi takes over the prison ship. Later, they come across Maxime, whose yacht was shipwrecked. Thanks to Dr. Kanak , a prodigious surgeon, Cheri-Bibi literally swaps faces with the dead Maxime and hopes to start a new life in France. However, fatality strikes when Cheri-Bibi (now looking like Maxime) discovers upon his return that Maxime was the real murderer. : Gaston Leroux Leroux , a writer best known for his classic The Phantom Of The Opera ) (1910), about which little need be said, the tragic yet murderous man-ape Balaoo (1911) and Cheri-Bibi Trained as a lawyer, Leroux was a renowned investigative journalist who even traveled to, and reported from, Russia just before the Bolshevik Revolution. His journalistic skills helped the French fantastique emerge from the gothic and romantic literary morass of the end of the 19th century, and, by making it more contemporary and real, gave it a new lease on life. In Today, Gaston Leroux is best remembered as the author of a series of mystery novels, starring the character of dashing young journalist, Joseph Rouletabille , clearly an idealized projection of the author. Like Auguste Dupin Lecoq Sherlock Holmes and Hercule Poirot , Rouletabille solved his cases by pure deductive reasoning, what he called the "good end of reason." He drew a figurative circle around the facts that were known, and excluded everything that was not part of that circle, even if they appeared to be. The Rouletabille series included few genre elements, but was filled with a remarkable gothic atmosphere. In the first novel of the series
