Matthew Gregory Lewis, , known as "Monk" Lewis, English novelist. Lewis is best known for his sensational Gothic novel The Monk ), a work which introduced the violence characteristic of German Gothic to the tradition established in England by Horace Walpole . His musical drama, The Castle Spectre ), increased his popularity. Lewis served as a relatively ineffective member of Parliament from to . He also owned a considerable amount of property in the West Indies, inherited from his father; his experience there led him to campaign for the humane treatment of slaves in his posthumously published Journal of a West India Proprietor Lewis met a great many famous and influential people: Walter Scott said he was fonder of great people than he ought to have been, either as a man of talent or a man of fortune. He had always dukes and duchesses in his mouth, and was particularly fond of anyone who had a title. But his associations included not only the nobility, but a great many writers, including Scott himself. While living in Weimar in , he met " M. de Goethe

alchemy and magic, and rumors were told of his disdain for the clergy and his extreme conceit; he was held to have boasted that he could himself repeat all the miracles supposedly done by Jesus. According to one account, when Faust was lecturing on Homer at the University of Erfurt, he summoned the spirits of the Homeric heroes and presented them to his students in the flesh. Tragical History of Doctor Faustus (written c. 1588; published posthumously in two versions in 1604 and 1616), the first dramatic adaptation of the legend. Marlowe's Faustus, as in the earlier versions of the story, dies and is bound for damnation. The most famous version of the story, however, is contemporary with Mary Shelley: Goethe 's Faust , the work for which he is now best known. At what point he read Marlowe's play is uncertain (his first recorded reading was in ), but he could have known the story from its popular representations in German folk drama and puppet shows which can themselves be traced back to a company of English actors performing Marlowe's play in Germany in 1593. Goethe began the first part after completing The Sorrows of Werther in the middle 1770s, under the influence of German enthusiasm for the works of Shakespeare. In the 1780s he resumed work on

Did I request thee, Maker, from my clay To mould me man? Did I solicit thee From darkness to promote me? John Milton, Paradise Lost Like one who, on a lonely road, Doth walk in fear and dread, And, having once turned round, walks on, And turns no more his head; Because he knows a frightful fiend Doth close behind him tread. Samuel Taylor Coleridge, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner I saw the hideous phantasm of a man stretched out, and then, on the working of some powerful engine, show signs of life, and stir with an uneasy, half-vital motion. Percy Bysshe Shelley There are two creatures of horror that are known to everyone - Dracula and Frankenstein - though in popular misconception neither bear much resemblance to their original creations. Both Bram Stoker's Dracula and Mary Shelley's Frankenstein have led to a whole genre of horror movies, though none bear much resemblance either to the original characters or to the novels in which they first appear.

We would love to expand this list to include your favorites. Please submit your favorites. For starters you need a ruined building. But not just any ruin. It should have once been beautiful and big and costly. The hallowed steps of generations should have trodden on its stones. Now it must be fallen on desperate times. If it can be covered with some sort of creeping flower or tendrily vine, so much the better. Then you need a maiden in despair or a damsel in distress. Her virgin status must be obvious to the most casual observer. Oh and a hero. Someone dark, brooding and very manly. Sometimes just a little too manly. She doesn't want to remain a virgin forevor you know...

The Monk , by Matthew Gregory Lewis (1775-1818). Also known as Ambrosio, or the Monk Le Moine incestueux in French, which sort of gives away the ending). First published by Joseph Bell, London, March 12th, 1796. What do you think of my having written, in the space of ten weeks, a romance of between three and four hundred pages octavo? I have even written out half of it fair. It is called The Monk , and I am myself so much pleased with it that, if the booksellers will not buy it, I shall publish it myself. A letter to Lewis' Mother
September 23rd, 1794 We really do not remember to have read a more interesting production. The stronger passions are finely delineated and exemplified in the progress of artful temptation working on self-sufficient pride, superstition, and lasciviousness. The author has availed himself of a German tradition which furnishes an episodical incident, awful, but improbable. The whole is very skilfully managed, and reflects high credit on the judgement and imagination of the writer. Some beautiful little ballads are interspersed, which indicate no common poetical talents. The Monthly Mirror
