Subjects are concentrated chiefly in the northeastern United States, especially the New York City area, and Florida. Included are the homes of notable Americans, such as Raymond Loewy, and of several U.S. presidents, as well as color images of the 1939-40 New York World's Fair. Many of the photographs were commissioned by architects, designers, owners and architectural publications, and document important achievements in American 20th-century architecture and interior design. The mission of the Library of Congress is to make its resources available and useful to Congress and the American people and to sustain and preserve a universal collection of knowledge and creativity for future generations. The goal of the Library's National Digital Library Program is to offer broad public access to a wide range of historical and cultural documents as a contribution to education and lifelong learning. The Library of Congress presents these documents as part of the record of the past. These primary historical documents reflect the attitudes, perspectives, and beliefs of different times. The Blind Boys of Alabama Performance
Wednesday, June 5, 2002

Fresh from their Grammy win, the Blind Boys of Alabama present a free, lunchtime gospel concert on the steps of the Library of Congress. The concert was co-sponsored by the American Folklife Center and the Kennedy Center Millennium Stage as part of "Homegrown 2002: The Music of America," and the Library's Music Division, as part of its major musical initiative, "I Hear America Singing."
The Blind Boys of Alabama formed as a group at the Talladega Institute for the Deaf and Blind thirty miles from Birmingham, Ala. in 1937, where the members were taught piano in Braille. They sang together whenever they could; sneaking out of the school grounds to entertain nearby soldier encampments based there during World War II.

Credits Few figures have had so decisive and fundamental an influence on the course of modern cultural history as Sigmund Freud. Yet few figures also have inspired such sustained controversy and intense debate. Freud's legacy continues to be hotly contested, as demonstrated by the controversy attracted by this exhibition even before its opening. Our notions of identity, memory, childhood, sexuality, and, most generally, of meaning have been shaped in relation toand often in opposition toFreud's work. The exhibition examines Freud's life and his key ideas and their effect upon the twentieth century. Exhibitions Home Page Library of Congress Home Page Library of Congress

Library of Congress Will Not Digitize Books
(April 15, 2000) The Librarian of Congress, James Billington, gave an address at the National Press Club on Friday, April 14, on the role of the Library of Congress in the Information Age. He harshly criticized the Internet, and stated that the Library will not digitize books. However, the Library has plans to expand its web publication of other materials. The Library of Congress's forthcoming web site, which James Billington describes as "America's web site", will be located at americaslibrary.gov, starting on April 24. "So far, the Internet seems to be largely amplifying the worst features of television's preoccupation with sex and violence, semi-literate chatter, shortened attention spans, and near-total subservience to commercial marketing," said Billington. Billington said that the Library of Congress has plans to unveil a new web site. "We hope it will realize one of the earliest promises of the Internet: to put the Library of Congress at the fingertips of every boy and girl where they live."
