http://www.alexanderstreet2.com/CWLDLive/BIOS/A2105BIO.html
Lincoln, Abraham, 1809-1865 Abraham Lincoln served as the 16th President of the UnitedStates during the Civil War. Lincoln was born in Hardin County, Kentucky to Thomas and Nancy Hanks Lincoln. His family eventually moved to Illinois where they impressed upon young Lincoln the ills of slavery. Lincoln began working on his family's farm at a young age and did not attend school. He was self taught and read any books that were around. Lincoln set out on his own and settled in New Salem. It was there that he became interested in public service. During the Black Hawk War in 1831-1832 Lincoln served as a captain. In 1832 he decided to run for the state legislature in Illinois. He lost on his first attempt but ran again in 1834 at the age of 25 and served for three terms. It was during this period of political life that Lincoln became interested in law and began studying for the bar. He was admitted to the bar in 1836. Lincoln married Mary Todd in 1839. They had four boys but only one survived past childhood. Lincoln won his bid for a seat in the United States House of Representatives, and served from 1847 to 1849. He left politics for five years, focusing his efforts on distinguishing himself as a lawyer. Lincoln gained national attention and prominence in a series of debates with Senator Stephen A. Douglas. Because of the debates Lincoln was nominated as Republican presidential candidate in 1860. Lincoln was a staunch opponent of slavery and did not believe in a state's right to secede. No less than six weeks after his election the Civil War broke out.

Lincoln writes (in full): " Judge [Albert S.) White, In relation to your application to allow Mrs. [Myra] Gaines to come within our lines I have to say that for all the facts I know, I should have no great objection to her coming; but that I understand the Secretary of War supposes there is sufficient ground to object, and that l am unwilling to force the matter against his objection. Yours truly A. Lincoln". In this letter to U.S. District Judge White, President Lincoln refused to overrule his Secretary of War, Edwin S. Stanton. Abraham Lincoln
Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865), was President of the United States during the Civil War (1861-1865), which was the greatest crisis in U.S. history. Although Lincoln's primary goal was preservation of the Union, his leadership helped end slavery in the United States. Lincoln believed that the example of the United States proved to the world that democracy can be a lasting form of government. Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, second Inaugural Address, and many of his other speeches and writings are classic statements of democratic beliefs and goals. In conducting a bitter war, Lincoln never became bitter himself. He showed a nobility of character that has worldwide appeal. Lincoln, a Republican, was the first member of his party to become president. He was assassinated near the end of the Civil War and was succeeded by Vice President Andrew Johnson. Lincoln was the first U.S. president to be assassinated.

    ABRAHAM LINCOLN (1809-1865)
Autographed edition of A Proclamation , known as the "Emancipation Proclamation," (Philadelphia: Frederick Leypoldt, ca. June 6, 1864), signed by President Abraham Lincoln and Secretary of State William H. Seward. A Proclamation, known as the "Emancipation Proclamation." [Philadelphia: Frederick Leypoldt, ca. June 6,1864]. Broadside. On January 1, 1863, Abraham Lincoln granted freedom to all slaves in states then in rebellion, with the exception of Tennessee, southern Louisiana, and parts of Virginia. As stated in the body of the text, the proclamation was a war measure based on the president's prerogatives as commander- in-chief in times of armed rebellion. Despite its intent as a war tactic and the exclusion of various states and parts of states, the president's proclamation nevertheless stands as a milestone in the ending of all slavery in the United States and as an expression of the freedom embodied in the Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution. Although personally opposed to the institution of slavery, Lincoln had resisted any direct action against it for fear of encouraging the border states to secede, his first priority in the conflict being the maintenance of the Union rather than the abolition of slavery. By the summer of 1862, however, the president could no longer ignore emancipation as a tactical maneuver against rebellion, and decided to act. Lincoln wrote the first draft of the preliminary proclamation in June 1862, but did not publish it until after the pivotal Battle of Antietam (September 17, 1862). This document, known as the Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation, was issued to the public on September nnouncing the intention to free slaves within the period of 100 days.

By supporting the Union under President Lincoln at a time when there was an economic blockade of the southern states, the Lancashire cotton workers were denied access to raw cotton which caused considerable unemployment throughout the cotton industry. "...the vast progress which you have made in the short space of twenty months fills us with hope that every stain on your freedom will shortly be removed, and that the erasure of that foul blot on civilisation and Chritianity - chattel slavery - during your presidency, will cause the name of Abraham Lincoln to be honoured and revered by posterity. We are certain that such a glorious consummation will cement Great Britain and the United States in close and enduring regards."
