Dictionary of Modern American Philosophers List of Memorial Minutes in the APA Proceedings
compiled by John Shook Note 1. The Proceedings from 1902 to 1949 were published in Philosophical Review. Because memorials were then part of division business, a few philosophers received two memorials from different divisions. Note 2. Upon the reorganization of divisions into the American Philosophical Association in 1927, the 1927 Proceedings included the “First Annual Report of the Board of Officers of the American Philosophical Association.” Subsequent Proceedings were started off with the second, third, fourth, etc., Annual Reports. The last Annual Report in Philosophical Review was the twenty-second. Note 3. Beginning with the 1949-1950 Proceedings, its publication is an annual volume (starting with volume 23, continuing the numbering of the Annual Reports) until 1976. The 1976-1977 to 1979-1980 volumes appear in 6 issues, and subsequent volumes have 5 issues. Note 4. Birth/death and name information is sometimes missing; where possible, other sources have been used. Note 5. This list contains 899 memorials for 893 individuals.

Methodist Archives home page Arthur Preston Hadwen (1899-1954) was born in Lancaster. He received an elementary education and subsequently worked in an office. He enlisted in 1917 and was wounded and taken prisoner in his first engagement. Hadwen trained for the Wesleyan ministry at Didsbury College and served as a missionary in China from 1925 to 1945. He was interned in Shanghai during the war and after his release returned to circuit work in England. He died suddenly at Bardney in Lincolnshire. Source: Minutes of Conference 1955 John Haigh (1795-1859) was born in Leeds, Yorkshire and was converted by a sermon of William Dawson. He entered the Wesleyan itinerancy in 1816 and served as a missionary in Newfoundland for twenty-one years, where he enjoyed a successful ministry. He was nominated for the Chairmanship of the Bahama District in 1837 but was forced to decline because of the state of his health. Haigh returned to England shortly afterwards and spent eighteen years in home circuits. Haigh retired to Bishop Auckland in 1855 and died in May 1859 after a short but painful illness. Source: Hill's Arrangement 1858 and Minutes of Conference 1859 Richard Hailwood (1907-61) was born in Blackburn, Lancashire. He was educated at Giggleswick School and Cliff College. After three months in mission work, he entered Richmond College to train for the Wesleyan ministry. During his four years there he was an exchange student at Marburg University.
