Montana Historical Society A miner, trapper, newspaperman and politician, Frank Linderman was admired as a chronicler and storyteller of Indian life and culture. He helped establish the Rocky Boy Indian Rservation in 1916. Frank Bird Linderman
By CELESTE RIVER for the Missoulian Frank Bird Linderman (1869-1938) was an archetypal Montana pioneer who lived many of the legendary roles associated with the settlement of our state: trapper, miner, assayer, newspaperman, politician. While his actions in those capacities helped shape the early history of the state, his literary work influenced much of what has come to be known as Montana literature. Revealing attitudes far ahead of their time, his writings about Indians and his descriptions of the land speak to the problems and the hopes of Montana today. In 1885, Linderman came to the Flathead Valley in Montana Territory, where he lived as a hunter, trapper and guide for seven years. While there he befriended a band of Cree and Chippewa Indians who were refugees from the Riel Rebellion in Canada. In 1892, three years after Montana achieved statehood, Linderman left the open life for civilization and became an assayer and miner, living in Victor, Butte, Brandon, and then Sheridan, where he became the owner of The Sheridan Chinook newspaper at the turn of the century. He served in the state Legislature from Madison County in 1903 and 1905. The eighth legislative assembly of 1903 was the first to sit in the new Capitol in Helena. Its members formed an association in perpetuity and elected Linderman secretary "for 40 years."

It intends to put as many books on-line as possible and to gather these on line works into one central location. It is a terrific service of the University of Illinois.
Project Gutenberg is the brainchild of Michael Hart, who in 1971 decided that it would be a really good idea if lots of famous and important texts were freely available to everyone in the world. Since then, he has been joined by hundreds of volunteers who share his vision. Now, more than thirty years later, Project Gutenberg has the following figures (as of November 8th 2002): 203 New eBooks released during October 2002, 1975 New eBooks produced in 2002 (they were 1240 in 2001) for a total of 6267 Total Project Gutenberg eBooks. 119 eBooks have been posted so far by Project Gutenberg of Australia
