VACHEL LINDSAY
V achel Lindsay, together with Langston Hughes, helped define the school of Jazz Poetry in the first decades of the 20th century. So-called because of the syncopated or bluesy rhythms the verse borrowed from the music of the era, the tradition evolved with Hughes into a practice of pitching verse in conjunction with musicians. This style of poetry performance, refined throughout the century, culminated in the famous recordings of the Beat Generation. Born in Springfield, IL, in 1879, Nicholas Vachel Lindsay turned an early desire to become a missionary into a lifelong crusade for the arts. A painter as well as a poet, Lindsay shared William Blake's visionary bent. Exposed to the Revivalist tradition of the YMCA, camp meetings and evangelical preaching as a child, he renounced the religious basis of this tradition but retained its poetic spirit. Leaving New York City's Art Students League where he had lived the bohemian life and studied from 1904-1909, he tramped America with his Gospel of Beautyilluminated poems using complex allegorical visual iconography and verbal images which he distributed to his listeners. Once established as a poet, he toured the country, using the cadences of an itinerant preacher to mesmerize crowds in his recitations of his incantatory ballads like THE CONGO or GENERAL WILLIAM BOOTH ENTERS INTO HEAVEN.

Lindsay, Vachel 1879-1931, American poet, b. Springfield, Ill., studied at Hiram College, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the New York School of Art. Lindsay made tours selling his poems and drawings, living as a modern-day troubadour. He was particularly effective when reading his own poems. His poetry at its best is virile and strong. It has a fine spoken music, often enhanced by jazz rhythms. Volumes of his poetry include General William Booth Enters into Heaven The Congo The Chinese Nightingale (1917), and Collected Poems (1938). Lindsay was plagued by poverty and illness in his later years, and the quality of his poetry declined. See his autobiographical Adventures While Preaching the Gospel of Beauty (1914) and A Handy Guide for Beggars (1916); his letters (ed. by A. J. Armstrong, 1940); biographies by E. L. Masters (1935, repr. 1969) and Mark Harris (1975); studies by J. T. Flanagan, comp. (1970) and Ann Massa (1970).

    Vachel Lindsay Bio
Vachel Lindsay (1879-1931) was one of America’s best-known poets during the early decades of the twentieth century. His national and international fame began with the publishing of his poem, "General William Booth Enters Into Heaven," a tribute to the founder of the Salvation Army, in Poetry Magazine in 1913. Harriet Monroe, editor/publisher of the Chicago-based periodical, called Lindsay "perhaps the most gifted and original poet we ever printed." His story began 34 years earlier. Born Nicholas Vachel Lindsay on November 10, 1879 in Springfield, Illinois, he was the second of six children and the only son of Dr. Vachel Thomas Lindsay and Esther Catharine Frazee Lindsay. His physician father and mother were devout Christians, members of the Campbellite religion at the First Christian Church in Springfield where Dr. Lindsay was an elder and Mrs. Lindsay taught the adult Sunday School class. The day Vachel was born the leading Springfield newspaper announced, "Dr. Vachel Lindsay now has a son to help him in his profession." From the beginning, Vachel’s father hoped his only son would become a doctor.

    Brookens Library Special Collections
University of Illinois at Springfield Web exhibit created by Thomas J. Wood and Sarah Kirsch, 1999-2000. Nicholas Vachel Lindsay was born and died in the same house in Springfield, Illinois. Although he wrote verse from an early age, his initial aspiration was to be an artist. To this end, he attended the Chicago Art Insitute in 1901-1903 before moving to New York in 1903 to work for five years with the Art Students League. But he established his fame through his poetry, with vivid works designed for public recitation, such as "The Congo" and "General William Booth Enters into Heaven." The prairie town of Springfield was for Lindsay a symbol of agrarian utopia. In Lindsay's thought this small city, bordered on all sides by farmland, stood in opposition to the mean commerical meccas of Chicago and New York. Lindsay dreamed of a future Springfield transformed by the love of beauty and the democratic spirit of Lincoln, leading the world to a "spirit-dawn." In 1912 Lindsay made a cross-country "tramp" on foot from Illinois to New Mexico, during which he lived off his art (supplemented by physical labor), trading copies of his poetry and drawings for food and shelter: "rhymes to be traded for bread." "The Village Improvement Parade" is an example of the works he distributed during his "tramps."
