Franz Liszt Nace en Doborjan (Hungría) el 22 de octubre de . Su padre, Adam Liszt, era oficial del ejército y cellista en la orquesta de la corte del príncipe Nicolás Esterházy. Además de los rudimentos musicales, Adam transmitió a su hijo un hondo sentido de lo religioso que determinará en gran parte la vida -no sólo musical- de Franz Liszt. Su madre se llamaba Anna Laager. Liszt already left his native country at an early age. In Vienna he was given theory lessons by Salieri, the teacher and great competitor of Mozart. In 1823 he moved to Paris. Paris held an enormous attraction for all kinds of artists, both visual artists and musicians and composers. In 1836 the young Liszt won a piano competition and this meant the start of a long and successful career. For a very long time his fame as a pianist was greater than his fame as a composer. Liszt toured across Europe until 1847. There were long line-ups at the entrance of the concert halls if Franz Liszt gave a concert. One of Liszt's specialties was transcribing melodies of other composers. For example, the piano virtuoso could play extremely difficult improvisations of opera melodies which were popular in those days. From 1847 he received financial support and protection from Princess Carolyne von Sayn-Wittgenstein, whom he had met during a Russian concert trip. She remained his closest and most influential companion for the rest of his life. Now Liszt could dedicate himself completely and without worries to composing. In Weimar Liszt started a training course for young pianists and composers. He was an idealist: many of his pupils were given free lessons.

Aan het conservatorium daar was hij niet welkom, omdat Cherubini een afkeer had van wonderkinderen. Van 1823 tot 1836 woonde Liszt in Parijs, van waaruit hij verschillende tournees maakte; hij studeerde zelfstandig piano (methode Kalkbrenner) en bestudeerde de theoretische vakken bij achtereenvolgens F. Paër en A.Reicha. In deze tijd kreeg hij contacten met vooraanstaande kunstenaars en met schrijvers als Victor Hugo, Lamartine en Heine. In muzikaal opzicht hadden Cherubini, Rossini, Halévy en vooral Berlioz grote invloed op hem; van Berlioz bewerkte hij de Symphonie fantastique voor piano. Het virtuoze vioolspel van Niccolò Paganini inspireerde hem tot soortgelijke experimenten aan het klavier; hij bewerkte vele van Paganini's vioolwerken met een parallelle moeilijkheidsgraad voor piano.Van grote betekenis was ook zijn vriendschap met Chopin, onder wiens invloed de romantische en poëtische kanten van zijn muzikale persoonlijkheid tot ontwikkeling kwamen.
