Dr. David Livingstone
Dr David Livingstone was born in Blantyre, Scotland, on the 19th of March 1813. At the age of ten he ws sent to work in a cotton mill. Later he was able to resume his educational studies and qualified as a doctor of medicine in 1838. He continued his studies and was ordained as a minister in 1840. After failing to gain the approval to work as a missionary in China David Livingstone was sent by the London Missionary Society to Kuruman in South Africa, arriving in 1841. In 1849 David Livingstone began his exploration work and guided the first ever successful European crossing of the Kalahari Desert to Lake Ngami. It was here that Dr Livingstone learned of the peoples of the North who had to this time been unreached by the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. Compelled by the Love of Christ David Livingstone in order to end the slave trade and advance civilization as he believed according to the word of God explored central Africa between 1853 and 1856. From the Chobe River (Botswana) David Livingstone travelled up the Zambezi River with a small group of Africans.
Passing through Barotseland (modern Zambia), he followed African trade paths across the Cuango River into Portuguese Angola. He arrived at Luanda on the Atlantic coast in 1854. Livingstone then plunged back into the African interior. Following the Zambezi River downstream from the point of his earlier departure, he discovered (1855) and named the Victoria Falls. He continued east across what is now Zambia and Mozambique until he emerged at Quelimane on the Indian Ocean in 1856.

He arrived in Africa as a medical missionary in 1841. In 1851 he discovered the Zambezi River and four years later the famous Victoria Falls. He returned to London where he published material related to his explorations. At the insistence of the Royal Geographical Society he returned to Africa where he discovered the source of the Nile. His explorations continued and when H. M. Stanley of the New York Herald was sent to look for him he was discovered at Ujiji. Two years later in 1873 he died in a small village. Native followers preserved his body and carried it to the coast where it was sent to England and buried in Westminster Abbey. David Livingstone (1813–1873) has been revered as one of the world’s greatest explorers and missionaries, the first European to cross Africa and the first to find Victoria Falls and the source of the Congo. Tim Jeal’s masterful biography reveals the man behind the myth, one capable of ruthless cruelty as well as self-sacrifice and bravery, one dogged all his life by failure as well as success. “This superb new biography differs from all previous ones in its political and historical sophistication, and in its fidelity to fact rather than to sentiment. . . . Stripping the sentimentality from the life of Livingstone has served not to diminish but to enhance it.” Fawn M. Brodie, New York Times Book Review “An unhaloed portrait of a very great man. . . . First rate, absorbing, informative, judicious.” New York Times “A rich and readable book.”Jan Morris, Spectator “Well researched and written, both analytical and intuitive . . . an excellent biography.” Richard West

Stanley and Livingstone
Stanley and Livingstone were two British explorers who excited the Western world with their travels in Africa. Henry Morton Stanley (1841-1904) went to Africa to find David Livingstone (1813-1873) in 1869. Livingstone was known to be exploring the interior of the continent. But no one had heard from him in several years, and so the New York Herald sent Stanley to find him. Stanley's search ended on Nov. 10, 1871, when he met Livingstone at the town of Ujiji, on Lake Tanganyika. Stanley greeted him with the now-famous words: "Dr. Livingstone, I presume?"
Livingstone's discoveries David Livingstone David Livingstone was born in Blantyre, Scotland, near Glasgow. He received a medical degree from the University of Glasgow and joined the London Missionary Society. The society sent him to southern Africa. There he worked to convert Africans to Christianity and to end the business of selling captured Africans as slaves. From 1859 to 1863, Livingstone led a large expedition across Africa's interior. He became the first European to see Lakes Nyasa and Chilwa, in what is now Malawi. In the late 1860's, Livingstone began to explore the Lake Tanganyika region. He learned more about African customs, geography, and the slave trade than any other European of his day. His discoveries led to a great competition among European nations for control of Africa.

Scottish missionary in Africa, explorer and author.

David Livingstone In 1840 the London Missionary Society sent David Livingstone to Bechuanaland, a region of South Africa claimed by the British under colonialism . Livingstone worked for ten years establishing mission stations. He then undertook a series of journeys across Africa, exploring areas that Europeans had never seen before. In his travels Livingstone recorded his observations about the rivers, lands, and wildlife. Wherever possible, he evangelized the people he met. Livingstone was appalled by the slave trade which had devastated so many lands and peoples. To the London Missionary Society he wrote, "Can the love of Christ not carry the missionary where the slave trade carries the trader?" His book, Missionary Travels and Researches in South Africa , made Livingstone's adventures legendary.
