Who's Who: Henry Cabot Lodge
Updated - Tuesday, 28 January, 2003 Henry Cabot Lodge (1850-1924), a conservative Republican politician, proved a long-term adversary of Democratic President Woodrow Wilson and, ultimately, his nemesis.
Born to a prominent Boston family on 12 May 1850, Lodge was educated at Harvard from which he emerged with a Ph.D. in political science in 1876, being admitted to the bar the same year.
Lodge acted as assistant editor, from 1873-76, of the North American Review , before lecturing on U.S. history at Harvard from 1876-79. He co-edited the International Review (with John Torrey Morse) between 1880-81. In 1880 Lodge was elected to the state legislature (until 1881), and to the House of Representatives in 1887 (until 1893). He subsequently served in the Senate from 1893 until his death in 1924.
Lodge took time to write a series of historical works and biographies in addition to carving out a growing political career. His works included biographies of Daniel Webster (1883) and George Washington (1889).
As a Senator Lodge formed a close alliance with Theodore Roosevelt. Despite his reputation as a conservative Republican Lodge was by no means isolationist. In favour of war with Spain in 1898, Lodge also favoured the acquisition of the Philippines.

Henry Cabot Lodge
Statesman
Lodge began his career in Congress in 1887, armed with all the confidence that his distinguished New England ancestry, Harvard education, and wide circle of influential friends could bestow. A power in the Senate and in the Republican Party, he was noted for his scorn of the alliance between big business and corrupt politicians. Close friends with Theodore Roosevelt, he shared the President's desire to see the United States play a larger role in world affairs. Ironically, however, Lodge is best remembered for spearheading Senate blockage of American membership in the League of Nations on the grounds that its covenant threatened American sovereignty. Thus, this man who had prepared his country for international leadership ultimately came to be regarded as an isolationist. John Singer Sargent was born in Florence to parents who had left Philadelphia to live in Europe. Like his parents, Sargent remained a devoted expatriate, although in later life, he returned to the United States frequently. Sargent, who came from the same aristocratic world as his sitter, met Lodge during his second trip to America, while visiting his friend Charles Fairchild at Nahant, a summer colony just north of Boston.

    Henry Cabot Lodge Sr. Biography
Henry Cabot Lodge, 1850-1924, was a Harvard graduate and a historian in his younger years. At age 36, he successfully ran for the House of Representatives, and by 1893, he was in the Senate. He was a republican, and was the leader of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee during WWI and after. He and other isolationist republicans helped to stop the Treaty of Versailles from being ratified in the USA, thus preventing the country from joining the League of Nations. He spoke out greatly against Wilson at this time, questioning his stance on America’s international position. Lodge also was an author, writing many historical books, and other books which dealt with the senate and it’s decisions. Henry Cabot Lodge was still serving in the Senate at the time of his death in 1924. His grandson, Henry Cabot Lodge Jr. went on to serve in the Senate and become very prominent. home
