E-Patron Helen Hayes (actress; born October 10, 1900, Washington, DC; died March 17, 1993) Helen Hayes, the "First Lady of American stage," as she was called by the audiences she captivated with her talent, grace, and charm, is best known for playing the roles of Queen Victoria and Mary, Queen of Scots. Hayes was born in 1900, in Washington, DC, to Francis Van Arnum and Catherine Estelle Brown. Her father worked as a manager and salesman for a wholesale butcher. Her mother was an actress with different touring companies, but was deeply frustrated by her unfulfilled dreams of becoming famous. Hayes was influenced by her mother and maternal grandmother to become an actress herself. Hayes made her first stage appearance as a student in Miss Minnie Hawkes'dancing school playing a Gibson Girl at the school's May ball. She joined the Columbia Players, a Washington, DC company, in 1905. At age 5. she made her professional debut as Prince Charles in The Royal Family . Home Surnames James Hickerson Helen Winters Notes Helen Winters Hickerson was born in Kirtland, Ohio, Dec. 3, 1844. she was the daughterof Hiram Winters and Rebecca Burdick Winters. Her paternal great grandfather came to America from Germany about 1750 and her grandfather, Andrew Winters, served in the Revolutionary War. Her maternal ancestors came to America in the Mayflower and her grandfather, Gideon Burdick, served as a drummer boy with George Washington when he crossed the Delaware, that memorable event of the Revolution. Hiram Winters and his wife, Rebecca Burdick Winters lived in Cattaraugus Co. New York. Hiram Winters followed the vocations of masonry, shoe making and nurseryman. In 1833 traveling elders of the L.D.S. Church visited the Winters home and the family soon became converted. Hiram Winters was baptized in June 1833. Soon afterwards he moved his family to Kirtland, Ohio and they cast their lot with the Saints. He was appointed caretaker of the Kirtland Temple and Helen Winters Hickerson was born in a small house on the Temple lot where the family lived. Helen's uncle, Olden Burdick, was the first man, and her father the second man to be ordained to the office of Seventy in the Church. Both were ordained at Kirtland by the Prophet Joseph Smith.

Sage, esq. in memory of Lyman Beecher (1775-1863), a member of the Yale College class of 1797. Sage, the donor of funds for the establishment of the lectureship, was a member of Plymouth Congregational Church of Brooklyn, N.Y., where Henry Ward Beecher, son of Lyman Beecher, was pastor for forty years. Sage was a prosperous businessman and one of the chief benefactors of Cornell University, where he served on the Board of Trustees. In accordance with the wishes of Mr. Sage, his gift to Yale was devoted by the Yale Corporation to the establishment of a foundation to be designated as, "The Lyman Beecher Lectureship on Preaching" to be filled from time to time, upon appointment of the Corporation, by a minister of the Gospel, of any evangelical denomination who has been markedly successful in the special work of the Christian ministry. With the authorization of the donor, the Corporation voted in May, 1882, "that henceforth the Lyman Beecher lecturer shall be invited to lecture on a branch of pastoral theology or in any other topic appropriate to the work of the Christian ministry." In December 1893, the donor authorized the Corporation, "if at any time they should deem it desirable to do so, to appoint a layman instead of a minister to deliver the course of lectures on the Lyman Beecher Foundation."
