Relief of Pain and Suffering The twentieth century saw physicians and pharmacologists seeking better drugs to alleviate pain. In 1929, the National Research Council launched a forty-year drive to develop an analgesic stronger than aspirin but without the addiction potential of narcotics . More than 500 compounds were developed, several of which appeared to induce analgesia in animals. How could these be tested in humans?
Measuring Pain in Experimental Subjects
At Cornell University , physiologist James Hardy , neurologist Herbert Wolff , and researcher Helen Goodell used very precisely calibrated radiant heat stimuli directed to the foreheads or hands of trained experimental subjects. They asked the subjects to report each "just noticeable difference" in the intensity of pain experienced, and graphed their responses on the "dol" scale , in which one dol equals two just noticeable differences, or " jnds ". Their method produced very elegant graphs showing the comparative effectiveness of various analgesics , and the physiologic responses associated with different intensities of pain.

"It is not 'seeing' the light that impacts one's life; it is never 'ceasing' to see the light that impresses one's life, spirit, heart, and soul."
Diane Lahaie "I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something. And because I cannot do everything I will not refuse to do the something I can do." Helen Keller "The fact that life isn't fair doesn't mean we shouldn't do everything in our power to improve our own lives or the world as a whole. To the contrary, it suggests that we should." In 1996 Jake Valentine (right) became the first recipient of the L. H. Walkinshaw Crane Conservation Award in honor of his long-time contribution to the study and conservation of cranes. Jacob M. Valentine, Jr. died 4 February, 2000. He is survived by his wife, Orpha Lea (Owen) Valentine; daughter, Frances Lea Valentine and son, Jacob M. Valentine, III; brothers, Lloyd and Ben; sister, Esther (Valentine) Kulcinski, and grandchildren Ashley R. Valentine and Jacob M. Valentine, IV. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jacob and Maren (Kirkegaard) Valentine, and his sister, Helen (Valentine) Beecher. Jacob was born 18 May, 1917 in Racine, Wisconsin. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, assigned to the 32nd Division in New Guinea. He received a Silver Star at age 26 for heroism in action at Saidor where, under Japanese fire, he risked his life swimming a river several times carrying wounded comrades. He received his MA in Zoology in 1950 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Upon graduation, he joined the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and served as refuge manager at Slade National Wildlife Refuge (ND), Chincoteague NWR (VA), Loxahatchee NWR (Florida Keys, Sanibel Island, and the Everglades, Florida). He became Regional Wildlife Biologist for the Gulf Coast Region, making Lafayette his home for over 39 years. His office was housed on the campus of University of Southwestern Louisiana (ULL). His association with the University, his dedication to the Mississippi Sandhill Crane and the creation of a refuge for their survival, and his life-long interest in the marshes of Louisiana led him to great friendships around the world. His family expresses their gratitude and appreciation for your love and support received during his illness.

Hello everybody and welcome to History's Women! In Western New York, spring is here! What a beautiful, sunny, and mild (now I didn't say warm!) Easter break we've had. "Disturbing the Peace: What Happens to American Studies If You Put African American Studies at the Center?": Presidential Address to the American Studies Association, October 29, 1997
Mary Helen Washington [End Page 1] called, in his claims for hemispheric unity, Nuestra America "Our America." While American studies scholars were still immersed in Virgin Land The Machine in the Garden , and Turner's frontier thesis, we were reading Lerone Bennett's Before the Mayflower , Malcolm X's speeches, the essays and stories in Black World , John Hope Franklin's From Slavery To Freedom , and discovering Charles Chesnutt, Gwendolyn Brooks, Chester Himes, James Weldon Johnson, LeRoi Jones, Alice Childress and Frances Harper. In the early 1970s, black scholars in these programs were doing a great deal of recovery work. Many of the texts we now consider classic African American texts were being brought back into print in the 1970s, but their life in print was erratic and unpredictable, and there was almost nowhere to go for critical commentary. It was an exciting and historic time, and I wish I had taken better notes to preserve for posterity everything that was happening. Looking at my journal entries from 1975-1976, I was amazed to see what being at the Center for Black Studies entailed:

Univer. of North Carolina Press. 1988. From Publisher's Weekly - "This is a fascinating account of the three Beecher sisters, participants in the debate concerning women's rights that emerged in the wake of the Civil War. As the authors deftly demonstrate, the siblings influenced each other throughout their lives, and shared a commitment to female power, although their visions often differed. Daughters of the eminent minister Lyman Beecher, they inherited his call to actively promote social justice as well as his desire for prominence in society." (Grimke' Sisters). Lerner, Gerda.

SISTER HELEN PREJEAN
Address at Annual Public Gathering - November 6, 1999 Introduction by Kara Newell, AFSC executive director Sister Helen Prejean was born and raised and has lived, or at least operated from, Louisiana all of her life. She joined the Sisters of St. Joseph of Media in 1957. She received a BA in English from St. Mary's Dominican College, New Orleans, in 1962. In 1973 she received an MA in Religious Education from St. Paul's University in Ottawa, Canada. She has taught junior and senior high school students, has been Religious Education Director of a Catholic parish, and has been Formation Director for her community. In 1981 she worked at the St. Thomas Housing Project with poor inner city residents and began counseling death row inmates at Louisiana State Penitentiary. She continues this ministry today. She has accompanied five men to execution. She also works with murder victims' families and founded a group in New Orleans called Survive. As you all know, she's the author of the book Dead Man Walking: An Eyewitness Account of the Death Penalty in the US , which was on the New York Times bestseller list for 31 weeks and was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. Her book was made into a motion picture, and the screenplay was written and directed by Tim Robbins. Susan Sarandon received "Best Actress" in 1996 at the Academy Awards for her portrayal of Sister Helen in "Dead Man Walking." That book has been translated into ten languages and is now being made into an opera by the San Francisco Opera Company, with Terrence McNally as librettist and Jake Hagey as composer. The world premier of that opera will be performed in San Francisco in October 2000.

I guess this is all about me. Me Me Me Me. So yeah. What to say about me? Fuck if i know. I mostly wanted this section to exist, cuz well, so often you go to a slash page, you read the fic, and you're left wondering (either for good or bad reasons) Who the hell is this person So I thought I'd talk about myself for a little while. I'm not, you know, gonna tell you major important details of my life, since well, I'm writing gay porn here, and there are reasons god invented the pseudonym. And besides, that's what my journal is for.
In The Beginning.... So I guess I've been in fandom (or well, reading slash) since about late summer/early fall of '99, which directly correlates to my graduating college and moving in with my current roommates. They had both discovered slash senior year of college, but I didn't really get it, and was too busy with other things. Also, i didn't really watch any TV that people wrote fanfic about. That summer (before I moved up to Boston), I discovered the marvel of bad-but-fun TV that is Highlander. And when I moved up to Boston, I was re-introduced to Due South. And thus I started reading a little slash here and there, but I wasn't really addicted or anything. I still didn't quite get it. I mean, the gay porn aspect was nice and all, but I still thought the concept of fan fiction was a little odd, and I didn't really
