Parentage.
H ENRY W ADSWORTH L ONGFELLOW , the most widely read of all the American poets and the one that has the closest hold upon the hearts of the American people, was born in Portland, Maine, February 27, 1807. His father, a graduate of Harvard College, was a leading lawyer in the city. Both parents were of the best English stock and descendants of the early settlers in New England. On his mother's side, the poet traced his ancestry to John Alden, whose peculiar courtship of the Plymouth maid, Priscilla, he was to celebrate in one of his happiest poems. It was from his mother, a lover of nature and of poetry, that Longfellow inherited his romantic taste and his literary ambition.
Youth
School life commenced early for this boy. He began to study at three, and was placed in an academy at six; at seven he was well on his way through the Latin grammar; and was reported by his master "one of the best boys we have in school. . . . His conduct last quarter was very correct and amiable." There were eight children in the home, four brothers and four sisters; Henry was the second child. Books were at hand; and out of doors there was not a little to stir the imagination of a boy in the brisk seaport town which has always been noted for both enterprise and beauty. Its picturesque features were never forgotten. In the descriptive poem

Classroom Issues and Strategies
If students have encountered Longfellow before taking a college course, the poems they know are not in this anthology: Evangeline The Song of Hiawatha The Courtship of Miles Standish . The Longfellow of this anthology is our late twentieth-century "revisionist" Longfellow, and except in poems such as "A Psalm of Life," he is almost unrecognizable as a writer who might have written those famous poems. If students have not actually read Longfellow, but merely heard of him (the typical case), they want to know why he's so famous. Longfellow is accessible, and the fact is that in almost any class there will be students who adore "A Psalm of Life" and students who cannot stand it. Such a division, of course, presents the teacher with an ideal point of departure. Although Longfellow is now very unfashionable, he is nevertheless an excellent vehicle for teaching about poetry either to the unlimited or the turned-off. Oddly enough, students in general respond to the story of his life almost more readily than to his poetry. That, therefore, is a good place to begin. They often ask about his fame. Some respond very positively to his sentimentalism, which can be tricky.

: : Matt : He was born in Portland, Maine, Feb. 27th, 1807. That is correct, Henry Wadsorth Longfellow was born in Portland, Maine, feb. 27th, 1807 and died in Cambrigde, Massachusetts, in the old Craigie House, March 24, 1882. He was descended from John Alden and Priscilla Mullens, who came over in the Mayflower. His great-grand-father on his father's side was a blacksmith. His grandfather on his mother's side was Gen. Peleg Wadsworth, the hero from a daring escape from a British prison; and one of his mother's brothers )Henry Wadsworth, for whom he was named) was an officer in the United States Navy. Two years before the poet was born, this brave young lieutenant lost his life before Tripoli, where his ship was blown up.
Stephen Longfellow, the father, was a lawyer and a man prominent in public affairs in Portland. When Lafayette visited this country in 1825, Stephen Longfellow was selected to present an address in behalf of his townmen. At the time Henry was born, The Longfellows were living in the house of Mrs. Stephenson, Mrs. Longfellows sister; but a few months later they moved into General Wadsworth's house, the first brick house built in Portland; and this was the home of the poet during his entire boyhood and youth.
