MCLS 30376 - The Novels of Pierre Loti (in English)
An examination of Western civilization's development of the idea of a distinct gay identity (the "homosexual man") near the end of the nineteenth century, as seen through the works of France's first "gay novelist," Pierre Loti.
Henri Rousseau's portrait of Pierre Loti "A fondness for cats in men [was seen as one of several] manifestations of a pathological condition, a kind of psychological hermaphroditism tellingly but not essentially expressed by the preference for a 'normal' member of one's own sex as a sexual partner." David Halperin, One Hundred Years of Homosexuality
The idea of homosexuality, which is to say of the existence of distinct and different sexualities, is relatively recent in Western culture; most scholars, starting with Michel Foucault, date its origins to sometime in the nineteenth century when, for various reasons, psychiatrists and criminologists began to write about "homosexual men." As you might image, most of what they wrote was very negative. Nonetheless, their writings created in the minds of men who felt attraction to other men the new idea that, if they experienced this attraction, they were in some very fundamental way

Selected Topics: La Belle Epoque
The period in France between the end of the Franco-Prussian War in 1871 and the beginning of World War I in 1914 was distinguished by a variety of things, among them a real fascination with the links between the arts. This course will focus on works by two contemporaries, Marcel Proust (1871-1922) and Pierre Loti (1850-1923), who were particularly fascinated by the visual arts (Proust translated Pater, Loti began his career as an illustrator) and whose novels are clearly in tune with what was going on in contemporary French painting. We will look at a variety of things, among them 1) the presentation of the exotic: Tahiti, as Loti portrayed it in his very successful novel of 1880, Le mariage de Loti , and as Gauguin portrayed it, both verbally and visually, during his sojourns there in the 1890s, undertaken, in part, because of Loti's novel. Since Loti's text is easy reading and is broken down into many very small chapters, and Gauguin's paintings are wonderfully colorful (see above), this is something that high school French teachers could use as a way of presenting an aspect of French culture (post-Impressionist art) and diversity (France outside of Europe). 2) the presentation of childhood: Loti's Roman d'un enfant , a novelization of his childhood, was a great favorite of Proust's; Part I of his

Born about 1330, T'ai-yüan?, Shansi province, China, he was a Chinese writer to whom has been attributed such classic Chinese novels as San Kuo chih yen-i Romance of the Three Kingdoms ) and Shui-hu chuan Water Margin) also known to English readers as All Men Are Brothers . Almost nothing is known about the life of Lo Kuan-chung. His authorship of San Kuo chih yen-i and Shui-hu chuan (the latter jointly with Shih Nai-an), however, has increasingly been disputed. The first work is a historical narrative that exists today in a version of 120 chapters, while the second is a semihistorical picaresque novel of 100 chapters, written in the colloquial style, about a band of outlaws. Both works enjoy continued popularity among Chinese readers.
