Re: "Your Tiny Hand Is Frozen"
January 1, 2000 (Otzchiim) More Fuel For The Aickman Bonfire I hope I can be forgiven for posting something this long, but over the Christmas weekend, I dragged out my copy of THE WINE-DARK SEA to try to see what some of you people see in him, to see if I have changed since I bought the book and now could find something. I read, I think for the first time, his "Your Tiny Hand Is Frozen" and was struck by the memory of another story with a similar situation, in some ways. I find the other superior in every way, and... Well, I understand less now than before.
    THE ONE LEFT
    by E. V. Lucas
I He had become very ill could hardly move from where he lay; and she, who loved him, and was to have married him, and spent all her waking hours in thinking what she could do for him, persuaded him to have a telephone installed and brought to his bedside so that he and she could talk, and he could talk with others, too. Every night he rang her up and they had a long conversation; many times in the day also. Nothing, as it happened, could have saved his life, but this modern device lightened his last weeks. His death, although it blasted her hopes, made no difference to her devotion. She merely installed his memory in the place of his rich personality and loved that. He, almost more than ever, was her standard. What he would have liked, she did; what he would have disliked, she left undone. Although dead, he swayed her utterly, and under his dominion she was equable and gentle, although broken at heart. She took all things as they came, since how could anything matter now that everything that mattered was over?

    19. Oh England, Country Of My Heart's Desire,
from The Old Country by EV.Lucas (18681938). Why is it that mankindalways has to lose something precious before realising its true value?
    http://www.thisengland.co.uk/editorsw2001.htm
Oh England, country of my heart's desire, Land of the hedgerow and the village spire, Oh homeland, far across the main... How would I love to see your face again . -from "The Old Country" by E.V.Lucas (1868-1938) Why is it that mankind always has to lose something precious before realising its true value? Law and order, peace and tranquillity, were among the aspects of life that English people took for granted as their birthright...but now, unless we are very careful, these and other joys of quiet living will be lost forever in the tide of racial and religious terrorism that threatens to engulf us all, at home and abroad. No matter where you live in the English-speaking world - America, Canada, Britain, and even faraway "down under" - the catastrophic events of this past autumn will never be forgotten. Millions of us sat in stunned silence watching the traumatic pictures of those blazing skyscrapers which were flashed round the world on television and are now etched in our minds forever. We sat transfixed by the spectacle of it all, powerless to prevent the wholesale slaughter of thousands of innocent people at the hands of brutally insane and brainwashed terrorists. We listened with horror to the sounds of grief-stricken relatives wailing in the streets below, and shed silent tears at the sight of those brave firemen, police, priests, doctors and nurses, many of whom sacrificed their own lives in a bid to save others. With true justice we can rightly call September 11th , 2001, "the day that changed the world", for it will certainly have a deep-rooted effect on all our lives from now on. However, strange to say, in many cases that change could turn out to be for our personal betterment, not only because it will have taught us just how vulnerable we are in today's topsy-turvy world, which often extends more compassion and understanding to criminals than it does to their victims, but also because it may wake us up to the reality that we ourselves are also guilty of taking too much for granted in our own compact little lives.
