FAMOUS FREEMASONS The Bulwer-Lytton confusion EDWARD GEORGE BULWER-LYTTON CONFUSION EDWARD ROBERT BULWER-LYTTON ROSICRUSIANS Edward Robert Bulwer-Lytton (1831-1891) Conspiracy theorists and anti-masonic writers will on occasion display their lack of research by confusing Edward George Bulwer-Lytton (1803-1873) with his son, Edward Robert Bulwer-Lytton (1831-91). Edward George Earle Lytton Bulwar was known, after the death of his mother in 1843, as Edward George Earle Bulwar-Lytton, and then after he was raised to the peerage in 1866, as Baron Lytton of Knebworth. Edward Robert Bulwer-Lytton was created first earl of Lytton in 1880. Contemporary writers would often refer to one or the other as "Lord Lytton," "Baron Lytton" or "Edward Bulwer-Lytton" and assume their readers knew to whom they were referring. This has occasionally mislead even serious scholars. Shown here is the frontispiece to Edward Bulwer-Lytton by James L. Campbell Sr. , University of California at Santa Barbara. Twayne Publishers, Boston: 1986 [156 pages] ISBN 0-8057-6914-5. The caption reads "EDWARD BULWER-LYTTON (1803-1873), Portrait by G.F. Watts. Philip V. Allingham , Contributing Editor, Victorian Web; Faculty of Education, Lakehead University, Thunder Bay, Ontario
Born 25 May at 31 Baker Street, London, youngest of three sons of General William Earle Bulwer (1757-1807) of Heydon Hall in Norfolk and Elizabeth Barbara Lytton (1773-1843), heiress of the Robinson and Lytton families of Knebworth in Herfordshire. Mrs. Bulwer obtains legal guardianship of her children through the Court of Chancery; her husband appoints her estranged husband military commander of Lancashire. 7 July: Death of his father, General William Earle Bulwer, who, having arranged for the defence of Lancashire against possible French invasion, had anticipated being elevated to the peerage. Attends Dr. Ruddock's school in Fulham; as a result of ill treatment, he is transferred to Dr. Hooker's school at Rottingdean. Studies Latin, Greek, history, and rhetoric under Rev. Charles Wallington at Ealing in preparation for attending Cambridge. His platonic love affair with Lucy D is cut short by her family's marrying her off, sending him into a Byronic melancholy. London firm of J. Hatchard and Son publishes the Byronic

A Benedictine cell was founded here at the close of the I2th century by the lord of the manor, Richard Fitz-Roger. His son THOMAS (1744-1779), who succeeded as 2nd baron, played some part in the political life of his time, but his loose and prodigal habits were notorious, and he is known, in distinction to his father " the good lord," as the wicked Lord Lyttelton. He left no lawful issue, and the barony became extinct; but it was revived in 1794 in the person of his uncle WILLIAM HENRY, ist baron of the new creation (1724-1808), who was governor of S. Carolina and later of Jamaica, and ambassador to Portugal. The new barony went after him to his two sons. The 3rd baron (1782-1837) was succeeded by his son GEORGE WILLIAM LYTTELTON, 4th baron (1817-1876), who was a fine scholar, and brother-in-law of W. E. Gladstone, having married Miss Mary Glynne. He did important work in educational and poor law reform. He had eight sons, of whom the eldest, CHARLES GEORGE (b. 1842), became 5th baron, and in 1 Sir Thomas (or Thomas de) Littleton, the jurist, had three sons, William, Richard and Thomas. From the first, William, was
