A BRIEF HISTORY The Kansas Bankers Association was organized on February 22, 1887, in Topeka, Kansas. It was one of the first five state bankers association organized in the United States. There were 56 charter members of the Association and two of those members still operate under the same name and charter today (First National Bank of Belleville and First National Bank of Junction City). During the 1920s there were as many as 1,300 member banks in the Association. Several hundred banks failed or were merged with other banks during the late 1920s and the Great Depression in the 1930s. The number of member banks stabilized in the 600 to 650 range after World War II and remained there through the mid-1980s. With the closure of dozens of banks during the severe recession of the late1980s and with the advent of statewide branching by 1990 the number of charters began to drop steadily. However, Kansas continues to rank 5 th nationally in the number of chartered banks with 369. th banker to serve as President of the Association. Several banking families have provided two generations of KBA presidents and one family (the Lulls of Smith Center) have provided three generations.
