Yet, for almost two centuries, the British were able to rule two-thirds of the subcontinent directly, and exercise considerable leverage over the Princely States that accounted for the remaining one-third. While the strategy of divide and conquer was used most effectively, an important aspect of British rule in India was the psychological indoctrination of an elite layer within Indian society who were artfully tutored into becoming model British subjects. This English-educated layer of Indian society was craftily encouraged in absorbing values and notions about themselves and their land of birth that would be conducive to the British occupation of India, and furthering British goals of looting India's physical wealth and exploiting it's labour. In 1835, Thomas Macaulay articulated the goals of British colonial imperialism most succinctly:

E xecutives really want to build effective organizations. They care about their organization's success and about the people who work for them. This is why they repeatedly try new ideas: T.Q.M., B.P.R., empowerment, flattening, self-directed teams . . . . And repeatedly they are frustrated when nothing seems to make much of a difference. Meanwhile, people get cynical when their leaders experiment with a seemingly disjointed series of changes, each of which is implemented half-heartedly and does little good. RoadMap has helped many leaders document why changes are needed; describe a vision of the end-point; define a clear, comprehensive path forward; and explain where each initiative fits within a broader plan. This book is for executives who have the vision, patience, and commitment to look past the fads and quick fixes, and solve organizational problems once and for all with lasting, systemic change.

Thomas Macaulay Richard Whately (1787-1863) was a contemporary of Jane Austen, a scholar, and a churchman. He was professor of political economy at Oxford and would rise to the position of archbishop of Dublin. He is remembered as a critic of the use of dogma in theology. He also knew how to read as he demonstrated with this review of Jane Austen's last two novels. I will quote a very small part of the much longer essay. I recommend the full version to you; the essay was written over 175 years ago, but contains an excellent analysis of novels in general and Jane Austen's novels in particular. Among the many good things that I will not quote is the best analysis of Mansfield Park that I have ever seen. (I do not reproduce Whately's spelling of either "Shakspeare" or "Austin".)
Among the authors of this school there is no one superior, if equal, to the lady whose last production is now before us, and whom we have much regret in finally taking leave of: her death (in the prime of life, considered as a writer) being announced in this the first publication to which her name is affixed. ...

"How did mankind ever come by the idea of liberty? What a grand thought it was!" G.C. Lichtenberg (1799) Foreword by Paul Johnson As someone who, in a small way, has tried his best to advance the cause of human liberty through books, articles, broadcasts, and lectures over many decades now, I commend this book to the American people. Jim Powell is a stalwart champion of liberty. He is a man of great energy, determination, obstinancy, and courage, and all of these qualities have gone into his work on behalf of liberty. He believes, as I do, that worthwhile abstract ideas are best promoted by the study of the lives of those who embodied them. That is what he has done in this book. I do not agree with all of it. Some of the people he presents as heroes and heroines of liberty in this narrative exhibited serious flaws of character and judgment, and their lives and writings and sayings should be studied with caution. But that is how one should approach all history, not least biographical history. What I am sure of is that anyone who reads The Triumph of Liberty
