George MacDonald (1824-1905) was one of the most original of nineteenth century thinkers. His writing and lecturing brought him wide recognition in his own day, and into the company of many of the leading Victorians of the time. MacDonald's writing has an outstanding imaginative power, largely influenced by the German and English Romantics. It is in the realms of fantasy and children's literature, along with his visionary theology, that has made his greatest contribution. Phantastes is recognised as a seminal classic of adult fantasy writing. His influence upon twentieth century literature has been far-reaching. The works of C. S. Lewis, G. K. Chesterton and W. H. Auden, in particular, bear witness to the power of MacDonald's imagination, a power which remains undiminished for the reader of today. Photographs and comment from the MacDonald/ Bunyan Celebration held in Bedford during 2000

George MacDonald (1824-1905) is best known as a novelist, the author of fantasies such as Phantastes (1858) and Lilith (1895) and realistic works like David Elginbrod (1863) and Alec Forbes of Howglen (1865). He was also, however, a respected religious teacher. He pastored only one churchTrinity Congregational Church, Arundel, 1850-1853before turning to novels and poems, but he continued to preach and publish sermons after achieving literary fame. Until recently, our knowledge of MacDonald's homiletics was limited to the sermons he wrote for publication: The Miracles of Our Lord The Hope of the Gospel Unspoken sermons (3 vols, 1867-1889) and the discourses he incorporated into many of his novels. We now have records of the sermons he preached as well: J. Joseph Flynn and David Edwards have located 20 transcripts in Victorian periodicals and published them as George MacDonald in the Pulpit: The 'Spoken' sermons of George MacDonald (Whitethorn, CA: Johannesen Printing and Publishing, 1996).

Macdonald, George 1824-1905, Scottish author. Ordained a Congregational minister, he eventually abandoned his vocation to become a writer and free-lance preacher. His first published works were several volumes of poetry, including the narrative poem Within and Without Phantastes (1858), and Lilith (1895), the last two both moral allegories. Macdonald achieved his first real success with his novels of life in rural Scotland, notably David Elginbrod Alec Forbes (1865), and Robert Falconer (1867). His lasting reputation, however, rests upon his superb allegorical fairy stories for children; they include At the Back of the North Wind The Princess and the Goblin (1872), and The Princess and Curdie See biography by his son Greville Macdonald (1924, repr. 1971).

George MacDonald (1824-1905) was a Scottish preacher, poet, novelist, fantasist, expositor, and public figure who was most well known for his children's books-At the Back of the North Wind, The Princess and the Goblin, The Princess and Curdie, and fantasies-Lilith and Phantastes. His fame is based on far more than his fantasies. His lifetime output of more than fifty popular books placed him in the same literary realm as Charles Dickens, William Thackery, and Thomas Carlyle. He numbered among his friends and acquaintances Lewis Carroll, Mark Twain, Lady Byron, and John Ruskin. Among his later admirers were G.K. Chesterton, W. H. Auden, and C.S. Lewis. MacDonald's fantasy Phantastes was a turning point in Lewis' conversion; Lewis acknowledged MacDonald as his spiritual master, and declared that he had never written a book without quoting from MacDonald. Although in MacDonald's time he was one of Britain's top-selling and most respected authors, in the twentieth century his books eventually became harder and harder to find until the only MacDonald books in print were a few of his books for children. After decades of being overlooked, MacDonald is once again a literary and spiritual influence in the lives of thousands of people. We hope our publications renew his life changing words to another generation and century.

George MacDonald The novels of George MacDonald all have a common link. I believe his purpose in writing is for characters and his readers to experience spiritual growth by witnessing the New Testament as lived through others. " It moved me the way books did when, as a child, the great gates of literature began to open and first encounters with noble thoughts and utterances were unspeakably thrilling."- Elizabeth Yates, an editor for one of MacDonald’s novels. MacDonald’s main characters live out and apply the word, the lessons, and the life and character of Christ with excellence. The characters become part of the readers life, forever to be remembered and easily recalled when the reader finds himself in similar situations. MacDonald’s flavorful words and ability make the stories so real and captivates his readers. They left me encouraged, strengthened and caused me to question priorities, examining What is most important? What is my purpose? The books inspire the readers to be more thankful and more helpful to others. MacDonald’s novels are touching and have moved me beyond words to express their value. I am thankful for books that contain so many scriptures and especially so many scriptures that fit the circumstances of the story so well. But not all books from the same author are not of the same quality or excellence. MacDonald is a supreme example of the necessity that we must use our discernment to pick and choose according to our own convictions. MacDonald authored a few fairy tales stories that I feel are such a contrast from his novels. It’s almost like two entirely different authors. "The Light Princess" and "At the Back of the North Wind" are two that I’ve read and would not recommend to anyone. 2nd Corinthians 10:5 tells us to.. "cast down imaginations and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of Christ, and bring into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.." Some fairy tales are simple and harmless enough, but when writers use:

    About George MacDonald
New: photos from Scotland (see below) 3/10/01 George MacDonald (1824-1905) was a Scottish preacher who became well known in the Victorian era as a novelist, author of children's tales, and lecturer. In addition to his fantasy works, he wrote a large number of non-fantasy novels for adults, as well as some profound theological works, including the "Unspoken Sermons". George MacDonald and his wife Louisa had eleven children. He often entertained the children with stories, and the family staged elaborate dramatic productions for family and friends. MacDonald was close to a number of well-known literary figures: Lewis Carroll was a frequent visitor to the MacDonald home, and sought George MacDonald's opinion of the original manuscript "Alice's Adventures Underground" before it was published. MacDonald's friendship with Mark Twain is detailed in the interesting article "The Salty and the Sweet" by Kathryn Lindskoog, found at the author's site, Lindentree , and also at The Golden Key web-site. The Lady Byron was a supportive patroness of his writing. MacDonald also counted among his close friends the writer John Ruskin and the painter Edward Burne-Jones.
