THE DEVELOPMENT OF PAGANISM:
HISTORY, INFLUENCES AND CONTEXTS, 1880-2002
back to papers presented
'A longing for the wood-world at night': the Influence of the Literature of the Occult Revival on Modern Paganism
Nick Freeman, Department of English, University of the West of England For Erricson had got upon his old subject: that the gods were not dead, but merely withdrawn, and that even a single true worshipper was enough to draw them into touch with the world, into the sphere of humanity, even into active and visible transformation. Algernon Blackwood, 'The Sea Fit', Pan's Garden (1912) . . . he was filled with a longing for the wood-world at night, with a desire for its darkness, for the mystery of it beneath the moon. Arthur Machen, 'Midsummer', Ornaments in Jade (1924) This paper will seek to address ways in which literature from the so-called 'occult revival' of the has influenced Paganism in the 20th century. Focusing on the work of writers such as Arthur Machen (1863-1947), Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) Algernon Blackwood (1869-1951), and Saki ([H.H. Munro] 1870-1916), it will examine the ways in which the 'weird tale' emerged from the late Victorian interest in the occult and passed into a wider imaginative framework. As such, their work has had considerable impact both on major figures in post-war Paganism (Gerald Gardner was a Kipling enthusiast, for example) and on a wider reading public. Significantly, major reprints of the work of Machen, Blackwood and Saki coincided with the upsurge of popular interest in the occult during the 1960s. All of these writers specialised in short fiction, and this had led to their being frequently anthologised, both for adults, and notably, for children.

    The Official Cthulhu Mythos FAQ
    Maintained by Daniel Harms
    Version 1.1
    Part 1. Introduction
1.1. What is the Cthulhu Mythos? The Cthulhu Mythos comprises a "shared world" in which various authors set works of horror, with some overlap with the fields of fantasy, science fiction, and mainstream fiction thrown in. A reader might well compare this to Star Trek or Star Wars, but the Cthulhu Mythos is not controlled by some central authority which commissions books, maintains continuity, and so forth. Rather, authors use elements from each others' tales in ways which complement (and sometimes conflict) with other's stories. All of these authors, in one way or another, are paying homage to H. P. Lovecraft Some have objected to the term "Cthulhu Mythos", as it was not coined by Lovecraft himself, but by August Derleth . These people point out that "Cthulhu" is hardly the most important creature in the Mythos universe, and have proposed an astonishing array of names to describe the same pantheon. Still, "Cthulhu Mythos" is used by most fans, and it will continue to be used here.

Certainly it isn't based on any early reading, because some of that consisted of MacCauley's 'Lays of Ancient Rome' from which flag-waving lines I should have drawn some Roman patriotism, it seems. At an early age I memorized most of those verses, but in reciting, changed them to suit myself and substituted Celtic names for the Roman ones, and changed the settings from Italy to the British Isles!" "The scream came from the Suydam stateroom, and the sailor who broke down the door could perhaps have told frightful things if he had not forthwith gone completely mad as it is, he shrieked more loudly than the first victims, and thereafter ran simpering about the vessel till caught and put in irons." Rating: Three shoggoths out of five Nutshell: A New York City police investigator tries to track down several missing children in the Red Hook neighborhood of Brooklyn, amidst bizarre behavior by the residents. Setting: New York City Commentary: Generally, Lovecraft's New York tales are extremely misanthropic, and this tale is an excellent example of that. His distate for foreigners tends to mar the quality of this particular tale, especially in the culturally-sensitive society of today. Even aside from that, this is far from his best work.
