I am an Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology (adjunct in Sociology) at the University of Alberta, and Principal Investigator of the SSHRC (Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council) funded Bridgland Repeat Photography project. I am also Chair-elect of the International Society for Ecological Restoration (SER) This project allowed me to get out in the field working on issues that matter to me: landscape change, ecological restoration, and protected areas management My research interests originate in ecological restoration, or how it is that history can inform sound decisions about the future of ecosystems. I am working on knitting together of human activities with ecological patterns and processes, which was the subject of the Culture, Ecology and Restoration project , the precursor to the Bridgland Repeat Photography project. In addition to collaborating on a number of Bridgland research initiatives, I intend on using the historical and repeat photographs to compare the amount and quality of change in human activity in Jasper, and using this information along with ecological data to promote and support ecological restoration of Jasper and surrounding regions. A MEMORIAL SKETCH BY JOHN WATSON (IAN MACLAREN)
Henry Drummond
"Well played, old chap!" the pure, clear, joyous note rang out on the evening air; "finest thing you've ever done," while the strong-armed, heavy faced slogger stood still and looked at him in admiration, and made amends. "I say, Drummond, it was my blame you were run out ...." Drummond was his name, and some one said "Henry." So I first saw my friend.
"Don't touch me, please I can't shake hands, but I've saved up a first-rate story for you," and his palate was too delicate to pass anything second-rate. Partly this was his human joyousness to whom the absurdities of life were ever dear; partly it was his bravery, who knew that the sight of him brought so low might be too much for a friend. His patience and sweetness continued to the end, and he died as one who had tasted the joy of living and was satisfied.

Ian Maclaren
Novelist
"Ian Maclaren" was the pseudonym used for fiction writing by John Watson , who was born in Manningtree, Essex, on 3rd November 1850. The family moved to Perth in 1854, and Watson was educated at Edinburgh University and the Free Church of Scotland college in Edinburgh. Ordained as a Free Church minister, he spent some years in Logiealmond, Perthshire, and in Glasgow, before beginning a long career in Liverpool. He published a number of religious works under his own name, but as Ian Maclaren was a leading member of the Kailyard School of Scottish fiction which came into being towards the end of the nineteenth century. Maclaren's first work in this genre, Beside the bonnie brier bush (1894) takes its title from Burns : "There grows a bonnie brier-bush in our kail-yard. ..." Beside the bonnie brier bush is a collection of "idylls" or stories, set in the fictional village of Drumtochty. The village is thought to be based on Logiealmond, where Maclaren began his ministerial career, but the picture of rural life, in common with most Kailyard works owes more to nostalgia than to the reality of Maclaren's time, or perhaps of any time. The narrator, though he may be a returned exile, is an "outsider" by virtue of his education and experience, so that he is able to observe the simple Scots-speaking villagers from a somewhat patronising height. Church affairs are at the centre of Drumtochty life, and the climax of a story is often a pious deathbed scene, where a brilliant young man or a saintly veteran goes to his eternal reward.

A short critical memoir will be found in Streffleur for January 1907. His son, ROBERT MILLIGAN MCLANE (1815—1898), graduated at West Point in 1837, resigned from the army in 1843, and practised law in Baltimore. He was a Democratic representative in Congress in 1847—1851 and again in 1879—1883, governor of Maryland in 1884—1885, U.S. commissioner to China ~n 1853—1854, and minister to Mexico in 1859—1860 and to France in 1885—1889. See R. M. McLane’s Reminiscences, 1827—1897 (privately printed, 1897). MACLAREN, CHARLES (1782—1866), Scottish editor, was born at Ormiston, Haddingtonshire, on the 7th of October 1782, the son of a farmer and cattle-dealer. He was almost entirely self-educated, and when a young man became a clerk in Edinburgh. In 1817, with others, he established the Scotsman newspaper in Edinburgh and at first acted as its editor. Offered a post as clerk in the custom house, he resigned his editorial position, resuming it in 1820, and resigning it again in 1845. In £820 Maclaren was made editor of the sixth edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica. From 1864—1866 he was president of the Geological Society of Edinburgh, in which city he died on the 10th of September 1866.
