Books and Newspapers
Lot
1600s British Newspapers.
Lot of four 17th century British newspapers. An issue each, single sheets, from: The Impartial Protestant Mercury, The Loyal Protestant, The True Protestant and Smith's Currant Intelligence . All London, dates 1680-1682. Remnants of library bindings remain at left of all sheets, some paper loss around edges. Otherwise, very good condition.
Rare insight into contemporary Catholic/Protestant tensions in England through Protestant eyes, as the newspapers offered here cover the fallout and trials that resulted from the notoriously false Popish Plot of 1678 and Meal-Tub Plot of 1680. Fascinating reading, including mention of pirates, knighthoods and the mysterious "Black Box," which supposedly contained proof of Charles II's marriage to Lucy Walter.
Estimated Value $200-300. Lot
1777 Almanac.

Who am I
Where do I Live. A bit closer to home. Hi There, I am Ian Paterson, and I live in the Northeast of England, about 5 miles east of Newcastle upon Tyne; the town is Jarrow and was one of the major industrial towns along the river.I am 21 for the 25th time and have been married for 21 years. I have always been interested in my roots and I live about 90 miles from where my 6th great-grandfather was born and raised in 1667. Meet me and the better half. Eilean Donan Castle, one of our favourite places. If you are reading this then you must be interested in genealogy and particularly the PATERSON's. You will find on these pages information relating to the history of the name and what it means: and especially information that may help you to find your ancestors. If you find a name on the other pages that ties in with your information then we are related. Don't be put off by the spelling of PATERSON, I have living relatives that spell the name with one and two T's. One story relating to the lack of a 'T' in my name is that last century one of my ancestors was buying a head stone for his dearly departed, when told that each letter of the inscription was two shillings and sixpence he immediately retorted "Haaf a croown, HAAF A CROON, ye na wot, ye can taak wan o thowse 'T's oot", A canny Scot to be sure!

Julian Maclaren-Ross: The King of Fitzrovia by Ian Armstrong Julian Maclaren-Ross collectors will want to buy The Cost of Letters: A Survey of Literary Living Standards (1998), published by Waterstone's Booksellers. In 1946 Cyril Connolly, the editor of Horizon , submitted a questionnaire to a selection of leading British authors, seeking their views on such matters as "How much do you think a writer needs to live on?", "...what do you think is the most suitable second occupation for him?" (very politically incorrect phraseology these days, but retained in the new book), and whether they had any advice for young people. Now Waterstone's has repeated the experiment, canvassing the opinions of authors such as A.S. Byatt, Melvyn Bragg, Fay Weldon, Will Self and thirty-eight others, and reprinting fifteen of the original Horizon replies. The best contribution, past or present, comes from Maclaren-Ross, the uncrowned king of wartime Fitzrovia, whose Memoirs of the Forties (1965) is an acknowledged classic. He writes: "Your questionnaire arrived at an opportune moment, when I was at my wits end to know which way to turn for money. This situation is always arising with me. Hence, my answer to your first question is: A writer needs all he can lay his hands on in order to keep alive." He concludes: "...if I have advice to give to anyone who wants to write for a living, it is this: (a) Don't attempt it.

Norm Howcroft photo A native of Barrie, Ontario, Ian Wilson developed a lifetime fondness for steam locomotives beginning with childhood forays to witness CNR steam excursions and photograph railway stations. An accomplished railway modeller, his feature articles on that subject and southern Ontario steam operations have appeared regularly in CN LINES, Railroad Model Craftsman and RailModel Journal for the past four years. Steam at Allandale To Stratford Under Steam and Steam Over Palmerston are his first three books in a planned series on a similar theme. Ian's ability to deliver technical information through the medium of storytelling was developed by combining his Queen's University degree and experience in civil engineering with professional schooling in theatre and dramatic arts. He and his wife Mary-Jo, a musician, presently make their home in Orillia, Ontario. They have two children, 2-year-old Spencer and Duncan, born in December 2002. 90. Ian Heavens Memorial
He did manage to get us a spot on ITV midday news though. He loved it. He lovedall that Malcolm Maclaren stuff. Ian dreamed of it then went out and did it.
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/david.cavalla/ian/music.htm
In the last few years, Ian embarked on a project that embodied his personality in many ways: whacky, individual, necessitating vast amounts of time in the pub. He succeeded far beyond anything thought possible. This is how Georgia March put it: I've been asked to say something on behalf of the band Bloco Vomit . In these few minutes I want to tell you a bit about what Ian did in and for the band. He'd been playing with the Edinburgh Samba School for about two years and was just coming up to the end of his term of office as their convenor when, in 1995, with Gary, he came up with the idea to fuse samba and punk rock. We decided to form a band and he came up with the name "Bloco Vomit".
Many of you have seen Bloco Vomit. Not many of you know how hard Ian worked for the band. He got virtually all our gigs and organised all our tours. At first people didn't know what to make of us. We were too far off the wall. Venues were wary of what they thought was a punk band. We would have got nowhere had we limited ourselves to Edinburgh. He made it succeed by sheer dogged persistence. He bombarded every potential source of a review or a gig with CDs and publicity packs. Our second CD was called "Play this, you bastard" because he could not get John Peel to play our first CD. He did manage to get us a spot on ITV midday news though. He loved it. He loved all that Malcolm MacLaren stuff. Every time you spoke to him he would be bubbling over with ideas.
We made our first CD in 1997. Now that there are CD writers and minidiscs anybody can make a CD but a mere three years ago none of us had dreamed of it. Ian dreamed of it then went out and did it. Not satisfied with just selling CDs ourselves he invented a record company to distribute them. He came up with another tasteful name - X Creature Productions. We trotted off to recording studios and started talking about guide vocals, click tracks, over dubbing and "dropping in". As Ian used to say "Its not the sort of thing forty year old accountants are used to."
