Roman Emperor, A.D. 161-180, born at Rome , 26 April, 121; died 17 March, 180. HIS EARLY LIFE (121-161) His father died while Marcus was yet a boy, and he was adopted by his grandfather, Annius Verus. In the first pages of his "Meditations" (I, i-xvii) he has left us an account, unique in antiquity, of his education by near relatives and by tutors of distinction; diligence, gratitude and hardiness seem to have been its chief characteristics. From his earliest years he enjoyed the friendship and patronage on the Emperor Hadrian , who bestowed on him the honour of the equestrian order when he was only six years old, made him a member of the Salian priesthood at eight, and compelled Antoninus Pius immediately after his own adoption to adopt as sons and heirs both the young Marcus and Ceionius Commodus, known later as the Emperor Lucius Verus. In honour of his adopted father he changed his name from M. Julius Aurelius Verus to M. Aurelius Antoninus. By the will of Hadrian he espoused Faustina, the daughter of

Marcus Aurelius
Marcus Aurelius (121-180) was a Roman Emperor from 161 to 180 AD. He is best known for his Meditations . He was concerned with the social problems of the poor, the enlsaved, and the incarcerated. Ironically, he continued the persecution of the growing Christian population. He died of the plague while planning an excursion that would have extended the Roman Empire northwards. His son and successor, Commodus, abandoned those plans. Marcus Aurelius was one of the great philosophers who embraced Stoicism. He was influenced by Epicetus as a young man.

thing to a philosopher king the world has ever known. Born to a prominent Spanish family in Rome, he became an orphan at a young age and devoted himself to a life of study. By the age of twelve he was mastering geometry, music, mathematics, painting, and literature. Under the mentorship of private tutors he learned fluent Greek and Latin and the whole of philosophy from the ancients through the Stoics whom he most admired. By the age of fourteen he received the toga virilis, the white robe signifying adulthood and full citizenship in Rome. A series of events that brought him to the throne began when the emperor Hadrian picked Marcus's uncle Antoninus as his successor but only on the condition that Antoninus should designate Marcus to be the next Emperor.

"Nothing happens to any man that he is not formed by nature to bear." Roman Emperor and Stoic, the author of Meditations of Writings to Himself in twelve books. Its first printing appeared in English in 1634. During the reign of Marcus Aurelius the celebrated Pax Romana collapsed - perhaps this made the emperor the most impressive of all Stoics. An important feature of the philosophy was that everything will recur: the whole universe becomes fire and then repeats itself. Marcus Aurelius was born in Rome as a descendent of Roman ancestors. When only a small child, he attracted the attention of the Emperor Hadrian (r. 117-138) - a paedophile. He was appointed by the Emperor to the priesthood in 129, and Hadrian also supervised his education. Marcus Aurelius was taught by the most able teachers of the time. The Emperor Antonius, who succeeded Hadrian, adopted Marcus Aurelius as his son. He was admitted to the Senate, and then twice the consulship. In 147 he shared tribunician power with Antonius. During this time he began composition of his Meditations.

http://www.angelfire.com/wa2/buildingcathedrals/marcus.html
Aurelius, Marcus: Many of his fighting men knew Marcus hated war and tried to overthrow him. One of these conspirators was his friend, Avidius, who was also rumored to be having an affair with his wife, Faustina. Marcus learned of Avidius' plans and ordered his soldiers to find him and put down the rebellion. But Marcus did not want Avidius dead, he wanted to forgive him and restore the friendship they once shared. This desire reflects Marcus' following of the Stoic teaching, "Follow the pattern of your life; be true to your nature." For Marcus, this meant acting like a King, with firmness but not with malice or hatred. Marcus was never able to forgive Avidius, as he was killed, along with some of his followers. And eventually his wife died on a journey to the rebellious provinces Marcus wished to return to allegiance and friendship with Rome. In the end, Marcus died a Cynic, a philosopher doomed to be a king. He believed in peace and harmony, but practiced warfare, including the persecution of Christians because their teachings he saw as opposition to Rome, hence enemies of Rome. His contradiction in behavior and belief are justified by himself in his writing, "I, Marcus Aurelius, have never intentionally given pain to another." Marcus accepted his destiny to be emperor of Rome and detested his fortune because it prevented him from being good.

FOREWORD When The Wall Street Journal asked newly elected President Bill Clinton in 1993 to name the one book (other than the Bible) that had been most important to him, he chose the Meditations of the Roman Emperor, soldier and stoic philosopher Marcus Aurelius Antoninus. And with good reason. Marcus Aurelius (121–180 A.D.) left behind a record of accomplishment anyone who has ever held or aspired to power – political or otherwise – would envy. He was the last of the line of Roman rulers known to history as the “Five Good Emperors,” Nerva, Trajan, Hadrian, Antoninus Pius and Marcus Aurelius. Their combined reigns, from 96 to 180 A.D., formed “the period in the history of the world during which the condition of the human race was the happiest and most prosperous,” according to historian Edward Gibbon in The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire.

Marcus Aurelius (121-180 CE) The philosophy of the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius can be found in a collection of personal writings known as the Meditations . These reflect the influence of Stoicism and, in particular, the philosophy of the Stoic Epictetus. The Meditations may be read as a series of practical philosophical exercises, following Epictetus’ three topics of study, designed to digest and put into practice philosophical theory. Central to these exercises is a concern with the analysis of one’s judgements and a desire to cultivate a ‘cosmic perspective’.

Life Marcus Aurelius was born in AD 121. His early education was overseen by the Emperor Hadrian, and he was later adopted by the Emperor Antoninus Pius in AD 138. After an initial education in rhetoric undertaken by Fronto, Marcus later abandoned it in favor of philosophy. Marcus became Emperor himself in AD 161, initially alongside Lucius Verus, becoming sole Emperor in AD 169. Continual attacks meant that much of his reign was spent on campaign, especially in central Europe. However, he did find time to establish four Chairs of Philosophy in Athens, one for each of the principal philosophical traditions (Platonic, Aristotelian, Stoic, and Epicurean). He died in AD 180.
