MARCUS AURELIUS
"It does not matter what you bear but how you bear it." ("Meditations") Marcus Aurelius was a Roman emperor whose "Meditations" are considered one of the finest expressions of Stoic philosophy. Born in Rome to a wealthy and prestigious family, his ancestors derived originally from Spain. He was only three when his father died and he was adopted by his grandfather. The "Historia Augusta" tells us that he took an early interest in philosophy and, at the age of 12, adopted a rough Greek cloak as dress. Perhaps it was his family connections that brought him to the attention of the emperor Hadrian, who awarded him honours when he was only six. Hadrian's successor, Antoninus Pius, Marcus' uncle by marriage, adopted Marcus and the orphaned son of Hadrian's heir-apparent, Commodus. Marcus quickly came to be the preferred of the two. He was given the title "Caesar" at the age of 17, and became consul at 18. He was married to Antoninus' daughter, Faustina. Yet, on the death of Antoninus, Marcus ensured that both he and his adoptive brother assumed joint power. Perhaps he anticipated that shared rule would give him more time for philosophy, but there proved to be little time for quiet contemplation. The reign saw a succession of disasters including flood, famine, frontier wars, plague and an attempted coup. Marcus wrote his "Meditations" while campaigning against Germanic invaders. They are expressions of the bleakest sort of

A.D. 121 - 180) [You can print out any page by (a) clicking on the page and then (b) clicking on Print on your browser's File Menu.] Short Notes Edward Gibbon (1737-1794), in The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire , provides the following portrait of the emperor Marcus Aurelius:
(from Chapter III) Marcus Aurelius was born M. Annius Verus on April 26, 121, to a patrician family of Rome. After the death of his parents, he was raised by his grandfather, who had held a consulate and served as a city prefect. Later, in accordance with the wishes of the the Emperor Hadrian (117-138), who admired him greatly, he was adopted by Aurelius Antonius who was selected by Hadrian as his successor. After the death of Aurelius Antonious in 161, Marcus Aurelius became emperor. The Meditations was composed only for himself; it was not a text intended for public consumption. Each of the twelve books contains a series of insights and reflections on life written as they occurred to him, often in no particular order. Book IV is often included in anthologies and considered fairly representative of the work as a whole. Here's a brief review of some of the important ideas.

Portchester Castle Still digging!
Portchester (Portus Adurni) has been the site of habitation before the Romans. Today it is best known for its Norman keep but the outer walls are essentially intact and Roman, being one of the constructions of the "Saxon Shore" fortifications. Within the walled area, excavations in 1965 revealed a gravelled parade ground from the 1600's, wattle and daub from the Saxon period and beam slots from wooden buildings of the Roman period dated to the late 300's from coins of Carausius and Allectus
Volunteers at Portchester carefully examine the evidence after all the hard work has been put behind them. A number of subsequent medieval inhumations were also found.
Pre-Roman Settlement
Higden a Christian monk at Chester recorded in A.D. 491 that there was a British camp at Portchester (called Caer-Peris). Higden also stated that there were two brothers here, Ferrex and Perrex sons of Sisil who fought each other, Perrex (Peris) being the victor. As a result Perrex was crowned king. He founded and fortified the town where Portchester Castle now stands calling it Caer Peris after himself.
However the murder of Ferrex was avenged by his mother Idon, "who with her maidens when he was asleepe, cut him all in pieces and after this the land was divided into three kingdoms" .

Marcus Arelius Antoninus
(121 - 180) Rome
Emperor and Stoic philosopher Born in Rome, he was adopted, at the same time as Lucius Aurelius Verus, by his uncle, the emperor Antoninus Pius, whom he succeeded in 161. He conceded an equal share in the rule to Lucius Verus, who died in 169. Marcus Aurelius spent much of his reign warring against the Germanic tribes, and died in Pannonia, where he had gone to drive back the invading Marcomanni. Although generally considered one of the best of the Roman emperors, he persecuted the Christians for political reasons. He also wrote twelve books of Stoic philosophical wtitings, the Meditations

We Three Kings - Part 1
Ancient/Biblical Times Alexander the Great, 356-323 BC, King of Macedon
Philip V, 238-179 BC, King of Macedonia

Marcus Aurelius, 121-180, Emperor of Rome
Three of the most powerful men of their times. What do they have in common? Each was adopted. Adoption has been part of our human experience probably since our beginnings, but certainly part of our written law since the 18th century BC, during the reign of Babylonian King Hammurabi. While this is not the first evidence of written law, the Code of Hammurabi is the earliest to survive intact with clear definitions of adoption. Paragraphs 185 through 193 of the Code deal specifically with adoption, the responsibilities of adoptive parents, and conduct of the adoptee.
