A.S. Byatt's Possession : A Critique of the Victorian Omission of Sexuality
Timothy Farrell '97 (English 168, 1996)
Like the narratives of Graham Swift and Peter Carey that function to subvert Victorian notions of progress and religion, A.S. Byatt's Possession: A Romance questions a dominant Victorian constructionfemale sexuality. Possession is a novel about a pair of young scholars who trace the correspondence between a well-known male Victorian poet and a lesser-known female poet. The novel is a patchwork of letters, poetry, and narrative. In her depiction of the Victorian past, Byatt recognizes Victorian culture's elision of all discourse surrounding sexuality. Byatt depicts Victorian marriagerepresented by the poet Randolph Ash and his wife Ellenin the same way a Victorian would have represented it, as evacuated of sexuality. Yet one of Byatt's projects in Possession is to valorize the sexual act itself. To accomplish this, she must look outside of Victorian culture to find a way of representing the sexual act. In her representation of Randolph Ash's marriage to Ellen, Byatt follows the Victorian tradition of displacing the sexual act from the marriage relationship. We learn that Ellen Ash marries Randolph after she has already lost her youth, implying that she has also lost her sexual attractiveness. She thinks back on her life, "A young girl of twenty-four should not be made to wait for marriage until she is thirty-six and her flowering is over" (499). Her memory of her wedding night reveals her terror over the sexual act.

Catherine Hogarth was the eldest daughter of George and Georgina Hogarth. Catherine was born in Scotland. In 1834 she and her family moved to England where her father had taken a job as a music critic for the Morning Chronicle Charles Dickens, young and unattached, was also employed by the Morning Chronicle. His first romantic relationship, with Maria Beadnell , had ended badly. However he was quite recovered and was quickly taken with Catherine. They met in 1834, became engaged in 1835 and were married in April of 1836. In January of 1837 the first of their ten children was born. The early years of their marriage were apparently quite happy. Dickens was in love with his young wife and she was very proud of her famous husband. In 1841 the couple traveled to Scotland. In 1842 they traveled to America together. After the 1842 trip to America, Catherine's sister Georgina came to live with the couple. Catherine was becoming overwhelmed the the duties of being the wife of a famous man and mother of ten children. Georgina stepped in to fill the gaps and eventually ran the Dickens household.

Instead of writing about finding Mr. Right, they wrote a book about what to do when you marry Mr. Right. In their newer book, titled The Rules for Marriage , they give you time tested rules to keep you happy and your marriage lasting. I read this book before and after I was married. Before I was married, the rules looked easy, but after I got married, I had a different viewpoint. Rule number five talks about expectations. I try to keep my expectations realistic but I still felt not prepared. These rules present a basic guideline women can use in their marriage. However, when faced with the situation it is difficult to put the rules in motion. I liked the advice that they gave and from what I remember to try in situations, have worked. I noticed the quieter I am sometimes the more attentive my husband can be. The other rule I apply is giving my husband ten or fifteen minutes alone after he gets home from work. This works really well. After I give him time then he usually comes to me and asks me how the day went, Since our marriage is so new I have not conquered all of the rules and I do not know if I ever will. I would recommend this book any man or women because the concepts are good and if you can use even one rule to benefit your marriage then it is worth it.

TIME FOR A NEW LESSON FROM SEAN
Sean will soon be a big brother and his parents decided it was a good time to move him out of his crib and into a twin bed. They did this not only to make a place for his little sister, but also to help Sean sleep through the night.
My daughter asked Sean's pediatrician about the advisability of moving Sean to a twin bed and the doctor suggested it would be better to wait until Sean learns to sleep consistently through the night in his crib. Ever since his birth, Sean has had periods when he wakes in the middle of the night and doesn't go readily back to sleep. His parents have tried letting him cry, but he has cried for hours. Sometimes my daughter or her husband walk with him and sometimes he comes into their bed. Since he has this pattern, the pediatrician thought Sean might wake up, get out of his new bed and wander around the house in the middle of the night. This, everyone agreed, would not be a good thing.
My daughter and her husband thought it over and decided not to follow the pediatrician's advice. While they respect her experience and knowledge, they believed they knew what was best for their son and they didn't think he would get up in the middle of the night and endanger himself. My daughter, particularly, felt that Sean would sleep better in a twin bed. Her intuition told her that Sean never really liked sleeping in his crib (he never liked taking a nap there either) and that moving him into a twin bed might be a solution.

Keeping Marriage a Priority in Dual-Earner Families
Since a majority of mothers now work at least part-time, most families have dual-earners. It has created a "transition generation" of families because it also coincides with a steadily increase in father’s being involved with parenting. In other words, the roles of today’s marital partners are different from that of their parents, forcing them to invent solutions as they go along. Lots of books on the topic but not memories of a model to fall back on. As we talked, however, a different picture began to emerge. "I feel like I hardly know him anymore." "We haven’t made love in weeks." "She’s always saying I still don’t do enough. I do much more than my father ever did." "We just don’t seem to have fun anymore." They attempted to talk to each other and often had intentions of making love, but by the time they got around to it, one or both of them was fading out and not very accessible. Falling asleep on the couch was a common occurrence. Rarely did they even go to bed at the same time. Weekend evenings were more likely to be spent with the kids, underscoring the parents’ guilt that they weren’t around much. "A pizza and a movie rental is our big Saturday night event!" The key strategy to take note of here is that Frank and Ellen stopped relying on their marriage sustaining itself spontaneously. A busy life demands planning and scheduling. So does a successful marriage.

How did you meet? Ellen: Rhonda: I was struggling with my previous relationship, not fully conscious that it was ending. We were both going out, seeing other people, but thought that we would work things out and get back together. We had been together for eleven years. Ellen: To have continued the old one would have provided too much conflict and pain for ours to develop properly. I had to make that kind of a confrontation. I needed to see that this was a relationship with a life commitment possibility. She chose to end the old relationship. Rhonda has a capacity to take emotional risks, to look at hard decisions and to make them. I have a lot of respect for that. And she has kept that quality over the years.
When did you come out? Ellen: About seven years ago, toward the end of my 14-year marriage. Rhonda: I came out when I was 19.
Are you out to your parents? Rhonda: Both my parents are dead. I never came out to my mother.

Home THE MIX-UP IN MARRIAGE ABOUT COLDNESS AND WARMTH By Barbara Allen Part I A wife wrote in her diary January 15, 1869: [My husband] told me during the evening that he loved me above all else in the world, and these words made me immeasurably happy even if I know it already within my heart without his having to tell me. This is Cosima Wagner and she is writing about her husband, one of the greatest composers who ever lived, Richard Wagner, a man who was passionate about the sounds of realityboth powerful and delicate as he wrote Die Meistersinger, Tristan und Isolde, Lohengrin and so much more. Wives have longed to hear these words from their husbands "I love you above all else in the world" and have felt they represent the warmth, the passion they need in what they see as an uncaring world. And then there comes to be increasing coldness, distrust of each other, and pain. The question is why? At last, through the study of Aesthetic Realism, the answer exists! It means my life to me that I have learned from Eli Siegel and Aesthetic Realism: true warmth between two people always depends on how fair we both want to be to the worldto other people, to truth itself. Unless wives and husbands use caring for each other to value other things more, the opposites of warmth and coldness will be in a painful, hurtful relation. A wife will want to soothe her husband and get "comfort" from him, while having contempt for a world she sees as against them. And she will be cold to the need they both havewhich is as organic as one's heartbeatto see the world, other people and things with passionate justice.
