B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Frederick Marryat (1792-1848) English naval officer and novelist whose adventure stories became very popular in the first half of the 19th century and are still read. Most of Marryat's books were based on his own experiences at sea. Tales of battles, storms, and shipwrecks had a realism and first-hand knowledge - he learned to write adventure stories by living a life which sounded like one. Marryat's works developed the great tradition of adventure stories, established by Daniel Defoe 's Robinson Crusoe and continued in the historical novels of Walter Scott and the Leatherstocking tales of James Fenimore Cooper "We are all of us variously gifted from Above, and he who is content to walk, instead of to run, on his alloted path through life, although he may not so rapidly attain the goal, has the advantage of not being out of breath upon his arrival." (from Peter Simple Frederick Marryat was born in London. He was educated privately and in 1806 he entered the Royal Navy at the age of 14. He first sailed as a midshipman on H.M.S. under Captain Lord Cochrane (1806-09) - to these experiences he also returned in his writings. "The

Biography Captain Marryat is the one author mentioned in these pages who had actually 'been there, done that'. Marryat joined the Royal Navy at the age of 14, and whilst a Midshipman served under Cochrane in the Imperieuse frigate. The fighting and advenutres he experienced whilst serving with Cochrane gave him material for his books. Whilst a Commander, he was in command of the guardship at St. Helena when Napoleon died. Before retiring from the Navy in 1830, Marryat had been awarded 27 life-saving certificates and had published a code of signals. He also saw further service and action in the East Indies and Burma. His books have always been popular, and a few (especially Mr. Midshipman Easy) have been in print almost constantly ever since their first publication. One of our few nautical authors who wrote about the Napoleonic sea wars but was not writing historical fiction: he sailed with Nelson. Marryat may have written about the same historic events that contemporary authors write about, but his authenticity of details commands our attention. Marryat's books are never dated in their adventures though the language may remind you how authentic POB managed to get his series.

Marryat, Frederick 1792-1848, English novelist. He is famous for his thrilling tales of sea adventure. His 24 years of service in the British navy in various parts of the world provided background for his stories. Noted for their humor and robust vigor, his novels include Frank Mildmay Peter Simple Mr. Midshipman Easy (1836), and Snarleyyow; or, The Dog Fiend (1837). In his later years he devoted himself to writing adventure books for children, notably Masterman Ready (1841) and The Children of the New Forest (1847). A trip (1837-39) to North America resulted in his unfavorable account of American manners, A Diary in America See The Life and Letters of Captain Marryat (1872) by his daughter Florence Marryat; biography by David Hannay (1889, repr. 1973).

T he classic novel that gave rise to the seafaring literary tradition. Before Patrick O'Brian, before C. S. Forester, there was Frederick Marryat. His novels defined the genre and were admired by literary luminaries as diverse as Conrad, Woolf, and Hemingway. Peter Simple , the story of a young naif in Nelson's navy, is Marryat's signature work. Marked by memorable characters, a comic edge, and the kind of unerring detail that comes only from first-hand experience, this is a true masterpiece of the Golden Age of Sail. Frederick Marryat (1792-1848) actually lived the life of a sailor and fighting captain in the Royal Navy. Such was the acclaim upon publication of Peter Simple that he gave up his
commission to become a full-time writer.
